You make the point that people spend over $500 on a console + all accessories in the first year anyway.

This may be true for many people, but lets assume all prices are the same, except for the console:

Someone buys a:
PS3: $500
Four Controllers (@$30 each): $120
Five games (@$60 each): $300.

Sums up to be: $920. (Probably a bit liberal, but whatever, it's an estimate.)

They say the Wii won't break $200. So, assuming all other variables are the same, that right there knocks your total down to $620.

*shrug* You say price won't make as much of a difference, I say it will. We're just arguing theories until we see.

Why are games so expensive?

Because only the rich are smart enough to enjoy games. The lower and middle classes aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate anything more complex than ball in a cup.

Price definitely makes a difference to someone who already owns four gamecube controllers.

Actually, the lower and middle classes are the smarter here. They are clever enough to simply pirate all their games.

Nintendo promised all of their games won't be above $50. I don't know if they mean ALL games for the Wii, or just games made by Nintendo for the Wii.

Considering the developmental time some of the games I've heard coming out for the Rev will take...I'm gonna go with Nintendo games.
