Like I said, I'm only slightly curious who would do such a thing with out acknowledging that they did. I don't take the action serious at all but I do believe the person who took it serious enough to anonymously insult me is a coward and I would like the action reversed. It's no big deal either way though so nice try.

I have a copy of the Quran in a box on a shelf somewhere in my room. I can't find it because I put it in a box so it wouldn't get dirty and it was a nondescript box.

Anyway, I remember poking through the English half (it has a Qu'ranic Arabic version and an English version in the same book) and finding lots of stuff like this;

The Prophet said, "Khosrau will be ruined, and there will be no Khosrau after him, and Caesar will surely be ruined and there will be no Caesar after him, and you will spend their treasures in Allah's Cause." He called, "War is deceit". (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 267)

But if they incline to peace, you also incline to it, and (put your) trust in God. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. S. 8:61 Hilali-Khan

Those are almost the same. I have a different translation, I think. I had to buy it for a College class. Anyway, it had a number of accompanying commentaries by Muslim commentators. Kind of like the Jewish Talmud. Anyway, they were all peace, love, and John Lennon. But there were also a handfull of "God commandeth thee to slay every man woman an child". OMG JUST LIKE THE BIBLE!

Detty got it mostly right. But sometimes, I really have to think hard to remember what color someone is. Unless they are hot women, then I know, because my libido is racist.

They were founded by someone claiming to speak to spirits, and they fight to replace the constitution with the ten commandments. They've been known to cover themselves in oil to protect themselves from bullets during battle- if a bullet pierces you, it means you didn't have enough faith. They also abduct children and force them to fight, so children in susceptible villages walk into cities every night to sleep in bus terminals, etc. to escape this fate. I was going to post something snarky, but then I remembered that it's you and you probably do honestly have a hard time remembering personal information about other people.

ok, i didn't think anyone would actually think i was advocating the group. personally i think it horrific. i just found it almost humorous that there is/are supposedly Muslims/Christians/and pagans all in the same organization, be it terrorist or not. if i offended you then... hopefully you will get over it soon.

and seriously i have heard "Islam is a religion of peace" so many times i would like to vomit. taking into account the actions of all their followers, almost no religion can truly claim to be a religion of peace (except perhaps some of the far eastern ones). not Christianity, not Judaism, and not Islam.

Yes. People who say that they don't see the color of someone's skin are either:

  • Blind
  • Colorblind
  • Equipped with X-Ray vision
  • Lying

To see someone's skin color doesn't make you a racist. To allow it to affect your opinion of them is.

Wolfy, I said 'notice', not 'see'. And don't be jealous of my x-ray vision, it's really not as useful as you think. For example, though I don't see the womans clothes, I also don't see her skin or other soft tissues. Unless you've got a skeleton fetish, it's really not worth it.

on a separate note, does anyone know where to find an accurate as close to word to word as is possible translation of the Quran? all i can find on Google are "translations of the meanings of the quran" and such. everything has strange little quirks about being the meaning of the "holy quran" or translations of the meanings within the quran. nothing that is just an unbiased textual translation of the quran. we need an atheist to translate the quran, then i would trust the translation!

The problem is that no Muslim who is faithful to the religion will accept any version of the Quran that isn't in Arabic as an actual rendition of the Quran. It's believed that any translation into another language would filter the words of God through the bias of men, and, thus, you no longer have the true meaning of the words of God.

Of course, this is ignoring the fact that there are different interpretations of the words of Allah. See: burqas.

No... that really isn't a problem for a non-muslim who just wants to read the koran in english..

Actually, yes it is.

Arabic is an extremely complex language and translations into English lose a lot of their nuances and secondary meanings. The Koran, in particular, is an incredibly poetic work.

You definitely aren't going to get the whole picture from reading a single English translation.

I didn't think you were advocating the group, and I wasn't offended. I had simply heard of the group before, so I thought I'd throw that out there. My last sentence was tacked on in a half-hearted attempt to stay on-topic. Sorry if you misunderstood.

No, don't be ridiculous. No one could have forseen a simple religious debate turning into something more. Not here. Not to Massassi.

There are some amusing names in that wikipedia terrorist organization list

People Against Gangsterism and Drugs
Khalistan Zindabad Force
The Angry Brigade
Weathermen

I'm a bit suss on the list of anti-Cuban terrorist groups though, can't say I've ever heard of any significant terrorism going on there. Probably mostly student groups and Warhammer clubs...

Well, this wasn't really a religious debate. It was more a rant on a sector of the American media. It is disturbing that people automatically assume I'm a racist and a bigot because I disagreed with the first post in this thread but it really is inconsequential as an internet forum is such a trivial thing.

It's good to hear from you. Have you kept in touch with any of the "old gang"?

ps - thanks to whoever changed my "avatar". It is FAR more appropriate now. ;)
