The People's Republic Salutes You! (Olympics)

General Beijing Olympic Games 2008 talk in this thread.

Who will get the most medals? Will you tune in for women's beach volleyball? Will the US basketball team fail again? How many doping cases will be exposed? Will any running event be won by a white man? What do you think of the new events? What events should be inducted or removed? Does anyone care?!
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
2008-08-08, 12:31 PM #2
I will not be watching or caring.

They introduced new events? I don't think I've watched the summer olympics in about...oh...20 years or so.
Life is beautiful.

So now basketball, BMXing and Snowboarding are all Olympic sports. Wow.

Also, you said women's beach volleyball?

I care more about the Winter Olympics but I'll watch things when I'm not busy revising.

The opening ceremony was a bit of an awegasm.

They kicked thousands of people out of their homes so they could have the olympics...

I'll be cheering the U.S. basketball team to regain their honor along with the U.S. Gymnastic team.

China is paying almost $50 billion on the Olympics... when Greece spent $9 billion it was considered way over-budget.
2008-08-08, 5:20 PM #13
Oh and I forgot that they've installed/are installing over 300,000 surveillance cameras around the Olympic area, for security you know.

I'm also looking forward to see if NBC, who I think has exclusive rights to cover the Olympics, will cover the protests at all... GE is a major sponsor of the Olympics, so they might not.

The opening show was crazy.

Also, I think it's cool to get a lot of countries of the world united in something.

Ha! What dream world do you live in? This planet will never be united on anything. I think the Olympics fester more nationalistic pride than anything. Who doesn't want to see their flag displayed as the most prominant.

Hell, I want the United States to kick the **** out of every other nation by a wide margin. **** unity, we're here to WIN!

methinks that the australian channel broadcastting is going to be in some very deep trouble, as a human rights organization acualy bought an advertising slot during the opening ceremony broadcast, but they decided not to air it, which when someone has paid in advance to have something braodcast, and you accepted the money, failing to braodcast it will tend to bring the ACCC down on you, and down on you HARD.

"One Dream, One World" is the motto for the Beijing Olympics.

Does anyone else get that? Was I the only one that laughed my *** off when I heard it?

The Beijing Olympic is been boycott by some people at the my working place.
I can understand though. However, watching sport is fun. Like a wrestling, fencing, beach volleyball (women no men for me), and track and the field.

Is it too late to place my bets? Vegas had 15-1 odds against cycling being the first sport to have a medal stripped for a failed drug test.

So, the US gets its first gold medal of the Olympics in women's individual saber fencing. It was also a clean sweep. America has never been good in the fencing event, and seeing as how this is the first gold medal for the US, I would have figured there would be some kind of video of the event. Nope. I'm kind of pissed right now. Not being able to watch the event(with an evidently huge comeback in the bronze medal match against the Russians) irritates me. Besides, saber fencing is just awesome.

I only saw a bit of the gymnastics today and nothing else because I spent all day working and then revising. :(

Geeze, who would be dumb enough to piss off Chinese officials by committing an embarrassing crime like that during the Olympics. I'd hate to be him.

He's already dead. The article says he jumped off a building afterwards.

Sad, I'd rather the commies sort him out nice and good.

They would certainly be kicked out and unable to cover any more. It would cost them too much money to risk that.

It is actually "One World, One dream." And plus, it just makes more sense this way.

It will if aliens start attacking the planet. I agree do agree that the Olympics can fester a lot of nationalistic pride. Speaking of which, are people separated by their countries, while they're spectating the events?

Yes if they're assigned seats.

By the way, the "Redeem team" won today against China by about 30 points. I thought China was going to put up a good fight in the beginning with all those three pointers they made, but I guess not.
