Hard to believe 5 teams beat the world record in that relay.

Was probably the best swimming moment I've ever seen though. I loved Phelps reaction too

By the way, it appears that China is blatantly rule-breaking when it comes to women's gymnastics el oh el

According to this morning's LA Times:
Gymnasts must be 16 during the year they compete ... but the birth dates of Olympic all-around finalists Yan Yilin and Jiang Yuyuan were listed as 1993 and 1994, respectively, on provincial registration lists. According to passport information Chinese authorities submitted to the International Olympic Committee, both are 16.

The world governing body for gymnastics, FIG, said it would accept the passports as accurate but promised to closely match passports against previous records in the future.
Translation: You didn't do anything wrong, but don't do it again.
The commentators were talking about this during last night's broadcast, too. >_<

I saw that last night. They're pretty clearly not 16.

I dont get it, what's age got to do with anything? If they're the best in their country at what they do why shouldnt they be aloud to compete?

This would be fine if, you know, it applied to everyone and not just one country. But the rules were set and all the other countries had to follow them.

Yep. I'd be all for letting gymnasts of any age compete. But when you have a country or a few countries disregarding that rule, it's a definite advantage for them. In women's gymnastics, younger gymnasts generally are lighter, have less body fat, and are better able to perform difficult skills.

That's also why most gymnasts are also short too, right? By the way, Demon_Nightmare mentioned five teams beating the world record in the relay. Are people getting faster or something?

Similar. Shorter gymnasts have lower centers of balance, which again makes a lot of those maneuvers easier. I've also heard that training for gymnastics tends to delay growth.

Phelps just won another gold, and made it look easy.

yes they are, but a lot of it has to do with the new suits they keep coming up with that are designed to better cut through the water.

I believe all Olympic sport should be done this way (like in the old times) but then everyone in this generation will be look at the male and female more intensely than the sport they perform.

Wouldn't swimming be more difficult for man and woman with no Speedo? More drag.

So? Treat clothing like performance-enhancing drugs, then. Same effect.

I felt sorry for the US team that they lost the silver, though.

They would just have to shave. It wouldn't make that much more drag. People would initially pay more attention to the bodies, but that is something that would loose it's interest after it became more normal. The adjustment would be to everyone's maturity/reality benefit.

I heard how more, I dunno, "hardcore" swimmers and runners shave their legs and such. But I can't imagine how that would make a difference. Especially since most of the activities depend heavily on human performance and not little things like body hair.

Body hair creates drag and drag reduces performance. In races which are often won by hundreths of seconds the difference a full body suit makes can be the difference between winning and losing.

Body suits dont only take things like hair out of the equation, they also pull everything into a more aerodynamical position so that you move through the water/air more efficiently.

On a related note, female gymnasts tend to usually develop smaller breasts due to their training right?
