Jedi Knight on Steam

Sounds like due to the encrypted exe system steam uses the unofficial patches are unlikely to work, even if some one wanted to take the time to redo the research.

For those with a Macbook Pro, I'd recommend you try Crossover for Steam. I was able to actually play HL2 pretty well through it while booted into OSX, so if you are looking for a solution to not always have to boot into boot camp, that might be the way to go. I'm sure DF/JK/MOTS and even JO will run JUST fine.

buck - is crossover free? I've already dropped £50 + tax on Fusion, so I'd rather not fork out twice.

Oh and dud - I got Evil Genius from gog.com ready for Vista/XP. It's either 6 or 10 bucks.

I have Crossover Games from the free offer they did if you want it.

You can view the price details here. This guy also seems to have great things to say about it. I think that I'm personally going to stick with the Base Camp option just because I'm not much worried about the partition size (it'll only be used for Steam & games) & it'll perform much better in those games where performance matters a great deal.

So, in theory, if these games are coming to Steam, I can safely assume that if I install Windows 7 on my iMac via Base Camp, I'll be able to play the entire Dark Forces / Jedi Knight series?
? :)

Emon - I've got steam running through fusion - i'm downloading the Quake III Arena demo. If that runs well, I'm sure JK will be fine. If not, I might come crawling back here in a few hours <_<

Cheers

Oooooo Emon - you've just reminded me! I downloaded that too when I was on a ppc mac. I hope I've still got the licence...

EDIT:

I've got the license, and I've got an OLD version of it. I'm going to get the trial and see if my code works with it.

Yeah, that's almost the exact same post I was going to make. One of us will post it when it actually comes out, we know the price, and we can link to something other than a twitter post.

You may not like the new art but the fact is it was still significantly more work than just throwing **** on steam. I don't see them using DOSBOX for DF, either.

I fully expect executables that just work on Vista/7, without hassle. I think the real question is "will multiplayer work in any way", since JK was never really built for an internet outside the MSN Gaming Zone. And I think it's entirely possible that the multiplayer will be missing or just as difficult as the old version.

I also would not expect any custom material to work, just because steam sucks.

Still, this has the potential to renew interest in a new entry to the series.

- LucasArts has not claimed to have fixed or remade any of the JK games.
- JK MP works just fine WITHOUT the Zone. JK MP has always worked by using IP addresses directly. With or without the Zone, people would still have to open ports for JK MP; that's the most troublesome part.
- I agree that this has the potential to renew interest, even if the games haven't been updated at all.

Personally I'm going to pimp Massassi, JKHub and JKE all over the steam forums once they are out.

I think most normal people realize after posting a few times on the forums that they're conversing with roughly 98% mentally challenged 12 year olds that have confused Valve with a non existent girlfriend, and then flee the site entirely. I mean, your average forum is full of trolls and fanboys, but you come back to them because there's still a handful of normal people to converse with, or at least knowledgeable a-holes. This is simply not true of steam forums. If there are any normal people there, their signal is lost in the noise.

They're up now. $20 for the whole lot. The system requirements for all the games mention Vista, so I'm guessing that means they did something to make them work in Vista, and if they work in Vista they're likely to work in 7 as well.

I'll download em and give them a try after work.

$20 for all? Hell, I was about to buy JO for that. I'll buy 'em up when I get home.

Since I'm on god forsaken dialup, if anyone could let me know if 3d acceleration works for them on a radeon HD I would greatly appreciate it!

To anyone who hasn't noticed:

They have not fixed anything in this release. It is essentially a Steam-prepared copy of the disk. Even the store page mentions there can be incompatibilities, and Valve says use 3d Acceleration at your own risk.

What a crock of ****.

Bah, hate to be proven right.

Hmm... if the unofficial patch can be applied on this version, that means I can still reach my hair platinum-coated target audience of nerds life blossoms playing 12-year-old video games with their pre-2005 computers for TODOA: SOURCE.

Oh well, at least I got JO and JA properly again.

Looks like their exent of getting the games to work came down to putting DF in a DosBox wrapper and changing the control schemes.
2009-09-16, 1:18 PM #119
At least you can use the DF data files you bought with DarkXL. Other than that it looks like a pretty bad waste of money.
