Jedi Knight on Steam

I'd be more annoyed if it were more than $20. $20 is a pretty decent deal for JO and JA I figure, and I haven't a clue where my JO CD went and pretty sure I never even bought JA.
2009-09-16, 2:03 PM #122
Any word on mod support?
nope.
2009-09-16, 2:11 PM #123
I'd venture a guess and say that everything works the same as it does with the disc versions, since, well, they didn't really change anything.
2009-09-16, 2:12 PM #124
So I haven't played any of the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games in years, and have no idea where my CD's are. Is it worth it?

[PS - my computer is POS circa 2005, but hey, these games are old]

If you don't care about the music from JK/MOTS, I guess? It's identical to the retail versions, so that's up to you.

And if you know for a fact that the original retail version worked for you. Otherwise it's a waste of five bucks.
2009-09-16, 2:19 PM #127
Eh, screw it. I would probably never play them anyway.
2009-09-16, 2:26 PM #128
I'm torn now. I want to play JO since I never owned it. I was going to buy the whole pack, but why bother if they didn't do a damn thing to the games I already own? Is JA any good?

Talk about lazy on LA's part. I surprised they didn't leave the CD check in while they were at it to save on development costs. I wonder if they just ran the crack from gamecopyworld and then dumped the whole install folder onto steam.

They did 'crack' it. JK and DF just use a file on the CD; those files have been placed in the install directory, which is the traditional way you'd crack JK and DF.

I don't know what they did for JO and JA but I imagine it's something similarly easy.
2009-09-16, 3:04 PM #130
pfft, i just bought it because i don't like lugging the cds around anymore

I don't remember if that method actually worked with MotS...I always cracked that one. I think the problem with that trick is it wouldn't play the CD music or something even if you had the CD in the drive if you had the jk.whatever file copied into the resource folder. I suppose that isn't a big deal if you have no CD music whatsoever!

Either way, what a let down. If you aren't going to fix anything at least give us the source code so some one else can...:downswords:

Hole in one, LucasArts!

I like how a Valve employee had to make some excuses on the part of LucasArts on the forums!

Oh Dark Forces has a terrible framerate, probably because of a cpu limiter in DOSBOX (Which if I can fix, anyone can) and has terrible sound.

I guess some people are reporting that downgrading NVIDIA drivers to something 186.xx or below works well (for you with nvidia cards who actually want to try and get the game working)

EDIT: The 186.xx series of drivers only came out in June, so I'm thinking that even downgrading to them won't mess up anything with current release games. With it people have enabled 3D Acceleration just fine (without any chuggin either)

yeah but something like that more than likely completely breaks more recent games

it's one of those situations where having an older PC handy is a better idea

Indeed. That's why I'm just sticking to XP right now on my Boot Camp. Glad I didn't quite jump to Win 7 on it yet.

Still running XP on this machine so no problems whatsoever.

Anyone want to play some NF CANYON?

That's me I found that solution.
See, I played MoTS through in july right? So logicly the drivers from them must work.
I'm so smrt.

Is there any way we can possibly clean this place up and organize the site a little to assist in setting up JK/MotS/JA/JO games/community? Even if we focused on the news, and finalized levels/mods (allowing JKHub to remain more of the editing portion of the site) we could at least provide some incentive for people to visit Massassi for JK related things. At least we could be the first hit on google.

Something other than "search the forums" would be nice at least. Even if some people would like to write a few faqs, we could start linking them on the main page.

Well, the thing is, a new Massassi site is coming sooner or later. I mean, I assume it's coming eventually.

I was thinking a simple "JK editing retrospective." Like a run through of JK editing history maps/mods and such. Something along the lines of this (for Doom): http://www.doomworld.com/10years/

Would anyone be interested? I don't have too much times on my hands anymore, but it wouldn't be hard with some community effort.

Do mods and levels work with the Steam versions of JK, MotS, JO and JA? If so I might get them just to play online, since I have XP and can run JK with no problems.

I can't play Dark Forces, though. How does it run with Steam? That's the one I'll probably get if I get one.
2009-09-16, 10:18 PM #154
1.Yes
2. Absolutely terribly, Get a retail copy or buy it and run it through dosbox yourself.

For Dark Forces: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=968354

For anyone who bought JK on Steam, can you play multiplayer with it? I'm not sure if connecting via IP is just a problem with my internet connection or something, or the Steam version.
2009-09-16, 10:22 PM #156
It works fine through Hamachi, not sure about actual IP gaming.

For the curious, a user here, post 8: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33942628 claims that an original driver for vista 32/64 allowed JK to work for him on ATI hardware without that great HOM effect. He says none of the new drivers work, but placing the driver file in the JK folder allowed it to work.

I don't have vista and no such file is available for XP, but he did post the relevant dll files if you're feeling adventurous. The files are from December 2007 however, so I have no idea if they will even work at all with newer cards that weren't out then.

i had tried using the dll he posted with my HD 4670, but had no luck. upon entering a game with 3d accel enabled i was black-screened (instead of the usual HOM effect you've mentioned), received some error message, got the windows BSOD, computer reset and i decided against trying it again.
