I don't really have a problem with Ingram beating McCoy. If McCoy had put up the same numbers this year as last year, he'd have been the runaway winner, but he didn't and he probably deserved no more than a fourth-place finish. But when I say that Ingram wouldn't even have gotten an invite, I'm not just exaggerating for effect. Ingram's numbers aren't as good as Shonn Greene's were last year, and Greene didn't get to make the trip. This year, Toby Gerhart was both more productive and more consistent -- in fact, his numbers are nearly identical to Greene's.
I don't think either of them approach what Suh's done, though. 12 sacks, 23 tackles for loss. Those stats aren't just good, they're astronomically good. Haloti Ngata didn't put up that kind of production in his last two years. Neither did Glenn Dorsey. And that's really the crux of my argument: Suh actually comes out looking better when compared to the best defensive tackles of the last few years. Ingram looks fairly pedestrian compared to Darren McFadden, Steve Slaton or Ray Rice.
I know that Heisman voters are averse to voting for defensive players, but they still claim it's an award for the most outstanding player in the country. As long as that's the case, I'm going to criticize them when they don't actually select the most outstanding player in the country.
