I wonder what would happen if you took in a cardboard cutout in the shape of a pistol with GUN written on the side of it?

Depends on what color you paint it.

No disciplinary action was taken. Whats the big deal? I think it's clear that they DID use judgement. Sounds like tolerance to me.

"She says she may sue over what she calls “a lack of common sense.”"

Mom ain't the brightest bulb on the tree either....

On a related note, I remember when I was in kindergarten a classmate brought a knife into class. The teacher took it from him, put it on her piano, and returned it to him when class was over. And that was like 1993.

When I was in middle school a kid got arrested for saying "I'm gonna kill you!" to another kid

It's not tolerance when they threaten to suspend you and make you sign "statements." The teacher should have politely asked him for it, put it in her pocket, and then returned it to him when school was over. Then she should have asked him not to bring it again because it's against the rules. This kind of **** is completely moronic. We're raising a(nother) generation of little pussies.
2010-02-09, 3:13 PM #7
At some stage they exercised a modicum of judgement, but not before making it into a disciplinary issue. If you arrest and interrogate someone for ridiculous reasons, can you call yourself "just" just because you didn't end up filing charges?

This is really stupid. It might be the worst application of a zero tolerance policy I've ever seen.

I realize this. I just think the facts of the situation make this one particularly bad. I mean, a LEGO figure's gun? Seriously?

No, but it makes it common, which means that one should be less surprised if it does happen, which is what I think bob was implying

For some reason I just came up with an idea that could be instituted in public schools. A toy guns for condoms exchange program. Two birds, one stone.

On a related note, I have one of the original all-gray NES Zappers they made before they made them red orange because people were mistaking them for guns or something stupid like that.

I have a grey one and an orange one. Facebook took down a photo of me pointing the orange one at the camera because "it condones violence" or some bull**** like that.

That one was even worse, since there wasn't even a tiny plastic gun and they brought the police in.

When I was in Jr High and High "screwel" if someone was caught making graffiti, they would just make them paint the side of the building after school and not bring the police into this.

Dry erase markers tend to only erase well on dry erase boards.

I'd have to find the article again to be sure, but IIRC she erased it before she got arrested.

Haha wow.

So how do dry erase markers erase on other surfaces, as opposed to 'well' on dry erase boards? Slighty inconveniently?
2010-02-09, 11:12 PM #35
Uh... not well. As in it's a pain in the *** to get it off of the surface. I'm not sure why this requires an explanation, but I'll provide one.

When you make a mark on a surface using a pen or marker, pigment comes out of the pen or marker and is absorbed into the surface layers of the stationery. Sometimes the pen or marker releases too much pigment and it even bleeds through.

Erasing a mark from a surface is generally done by rubbing an abrasive against said surface, taking the mark, along with a layer of the surface off. This is necessary on porous surfaces only, as on a non-porous surface the writing material is not absorbed into the surface, it simply dries on the surface of the board without being absorbed into the plastic, and it can easily be wiped off. Technically a dry erase marker does not exist. There are only dry erase boards on which markers can be used.

EDIT: I'm not saying it's right to arrest the girl over drawing on her desk. I'm just saying you can't erase marker very well from a desk, especially if it's wood, or certain types of synthetic surfaces. There's really no such thing as a dry erase marker. Draw a big cock on your forehead and see how easy it erases.

Brian: I agree man it's total bull****, stuff like this is getting out of control.
andreawesome: It's like that time that girl got arrested for marking on her desk at school with dry erase marker!
Brian & JLee: Yea that's retarded to!
JM: Why didn't they just erase it?!
Anthony: Actually, it's quite difficult to erase dry erase marker from surfaces other than a dry erase board.

JM: Thank ya, Anthony.

Anthony: Actually, it's NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to erase dry erase marker from surfaces other than a dry erase board. I'm not saying they should have arrested her for it, but the fact remains you can't just erase it. Although she did, in effect, destroy school property and should have been punished to some degree.

And you still haven't properly rebutted. Markers do not come off of desks well, regardless of whether they are wood or a porous synthetic material (which they always are). She shouldn't have been arrested, but she was still defacing school property. And if you let her go, soon you have kids drawing all over the desks and such.

If you let the kid bring a lego gun to school soon some kid brings an ak47 made of bacon and soon a kid brings a nerf gun and soon a kid brings a airsoft gun etc...

Where do you draw the line?
