Doom 3: I won't say it.
2010-08-13, 12:45 PM #1
I recall way back in 2004 when a battle of epic proportions was held on these forums concerning Half-Life 2 and Doom 3. I also recall getting a LOT of [BACONEDIT: flak] for complaining about how dark Doom 3 was. It looks like I finally have some back up. Now if he'll only comments about the games 'Plastic-Engine 3.0' I'll be two for two.

(Half-Life 2 is still better. Argue-- I mean debate.)

Half-Life 2, Source, is far better than Doom 3. However, Doom 3 did exactly what it was supposed to do. By being dark, it added suspense, and hid flaws the engine couldn't provide graphically. The game was awesome, and ran dreadfully on my 9800 Pro. But I loved it, I loved being scared to round the next corner, and being afraid to put down my flashlight to blast enemies, then bring it up only to reveal MORE baddies coming at me.

So I agree with your side of the argument, but I wouldn't go as far to say that Doom 3 was a bad game...

I think you mean Flak, if you were getting a lot of slack it'd be leniency. :P
nope.

I remember Dj Yoshi being the only person who was really hardcore about thinking Doom 3 was better. Anyone with a brain can tell fairly well that Half Life 2 is a superior game in nearly every way.

I enjoyed Doom 3.

I also enjoyed Half-Life 2.

Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I enjoyed Doom 3. I played it through once.

I loved Half Life 2. I've played it through more than once, and got its "expansion packs".

I really like HL2. I thought it was better than HL1 instantly when I started playing it and a lot of people disagreed with me then. And still do now. Well, f*** them!

Doom 3 however seems to be remembered from the darkness issue. I guess in retrospect you could consider it a graphics card "test game". I liked Quake 4 a lot more. Even if Doom 3 did evoke some System Shock 2'esque feelings in me. But most of it was just "boo!".

(Sadly some new Deus Ex 3 screenshots look very Doom 3ish... and very "brownish". Stupid modern game brown syndromes GRAGH :argh:)

Yup, hands down. Now where the hell is my episode 3?

As for the 'plasticy'; it was one of the first engines to move into the normal map everything area. All of them looked like that at the time. Despite looking like plastic, it was state of the art.

Doom 3 was not very fun. Quake 4 was a lot better.

I liked Doom 3, despite it making my Ti 4200 cry...

But I liked HL2 better (and I upgraded to a 6600 GT before HL2 came out so it was a more pleasant experience too).

odd... my experience running doom 3 on a 9800Pro was that it ran quite well

the expansion gave me (and everyone running ATI hardware at the time) some framerate troubles in the room with the x-ray thingy

and as for the plastic comment... Doom 3 to me looks far less like plastic than most other games from around the same time

That's pretty much the first thing anyone (except Mr. Carmack until now I guess) has said when bringing up Doom 3 for the past few years, so I'd say you had plenty of backup.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Am I the only one who wasn't so much bothered by the dark than the lack of space to move around in and the low number of enemies at one time in Doom 3? To clarify, my Doom 3 experience was entering corridors where you shoot maybe 1-2 enemies then move to another corridor and shoot another 1-2 enemies and repeat. I'm not sure if the developers thought putting more enemies in would harm the framerate so dramatically (which is probably true), but it just made me miss the fun enemy spam that was in Doom I/II ...with the bigger places to run around in.

Then again, I haven't played Doom 3 in years. But I remember it felt like a repetitive "haunted house" shooting gallery that went on a bit too long. Enemy pops up in the closet! Shoot it! Move to the next enemy! Shoot it!

At least HL2, despite its flaws, threw at you more enemies and gave you more elbow room.

Yeah, when I think of Doom I think of open spaces with assloads of enemies all over the place.

That's the main reason I was disappointed with Doom 3. It didn't feel like a Doom game at all.

Which was immediately ruined by every other element of gameplay.

I really don't understand why this is so hard for major AAA list studios. If a game is predictable, by definition there is no suspense. Imps are scary until you know exactly where they are hiding, at which point combat becomes a chore.

HL2 had plenty of flaws, but most of them were small enough that it didn't matter.

The only flawless game I think I've ever played is Portal. I can think of things to add that would improve it, but I can't think of anything I would remove. Grim Fandango comes in a close second, with the only complaint being "the controls take some getting used to."

No, you got flak for spamming that "BOOM 3" image that you thought was hilarious but everyone else thought was lame and stupid.

The dune buggy was one of my favourite parts of HL2.

And let's not forget that Doom 3 gave us Turkey Puncher 3D or whatever it was.

The only flawless game I've played is Super Mario World.

HL2 really grated on me.

Doom 3 was a great game but it was way too dark. And 'plastic' is basically how things look in real life, you just aren't used to games looking that way. Doom 3's specular highlighting was based on real world light models.

I can't consider SMW flawless because of these ****ers :argh:

Yeah, plenty of people have made the "it's too dark" argument, it's just that it's a silly argument to make.
Especially silly is the people that argue the game would be better if it was brighter, that would suck away most of the atmosphere and suspense.

quake 3 was a p bad game tbqh. Ugly, dull gameplay. 16-bit dxt1 compressed photoraped textures, bezier curves with fixed software tesselation.

john carmack's awfully great at finding brilliant new technological dead ends
2010-08-13, 10:52 PM #39
I agree with you completely on that.
Also I don't think Doom 3 was bad for being dark, I found the darkness quite good, made the imps fireballs and stuff looks extra pretty.
But the gameplay itself was boring, and the suspense didn't work on me at all. I wasn't sure if that was the games fault though, I'm the kind of guy who is either really bored or laughing his ass off watching horror/suspense/thriller movies (I feel asleep watching the Ring, twice, much to the chagrin of my friends, who -still- made me watch it the whole way through later, bloody boring movie that it is).

I rather liked Quake III. Ok, I rather liked that one map they had in the demo with all the bounce pads.

I think I was also partly flattered that it ran on my god-awful machine at the time.

On topic, I got about 75% of the way through HL2 on my 360 then gave up. I never felt compelled to try again until Steam for Mac. I've played it once since buying it, and that's more due to Freddie than HL2 being sucky. I never played Doom 3 due to not have a good enough machine and everyone ragging on it.
