You know what achievements I do hate? The "play for xx hours" ones. It's not like you've actually "achieved" anything (except possibly wasting your life, if you look at it that way). FIFA '09 was particularly bad, because it had one that you had to play for 50 hours to unlock for a 1g reward. Match time only, so you couldn't just leave it on the menu over night or whatever, and not even when you were taking care of stuff in the manager mode counted. And the worst thing was, I did it because it bugged me not having my score end in a tidy 5 or 0.

That reminds of Smash Bros having the alternate way of unlocking things. You could earn them the hard way or you could earn them with play time. Funny thing being that each players playtime counted. So all you had to do was start a four (human) player game and leave it. Every hour of that was four hours 'game time'. Five hours (=twenty) unlocked everything (IIRC).

Going back to the Doom 3 and HL2 war... It really sucks we will never see this kind of competition again. Everything PC gamer's play now are ported from console versions. I read an article about why BFBC2 is now never going to be patched again because the patches they make each time are for a compiled game running with 80% "cooked (ie. pre-rendered and compressed)" software with only 20% being real-time. When they go and patch the "cooked" software it creates a bunch of other errors causing instability. PC Games need to be developed in a new SDK type format so our ultra fast CPU's can compile and compress real time for even better experiences. I am just sad to see PC gaming (FPS, adventure... mostly, I never liked mmo's) in its current state of affairs :(
