I honestly find myself wanting to play PlayStation 3 and 360 over the PC. Maybe it's because I spend 8-10 hours each day trying to get a computer to do what I want it to that doing so for entertainment isn't as...entertaining?

Plus, achievements, trophies, and gamer points!

Oh gods how I hate achievements, trophies and gamer points, they annoy me so much.
And they're on everything now, including the pc, and with each pc game you have to turn off the notifications individually, some don't even have the option.
If it were done well I'd like it. If it didn't interrupt cut-scenes or important story line moments with "BING! YOU JUST BEAT THE FIRST BOSS, AREN'T YOU GLAD THERE'S AN ACHIEVEMENT FOR THIS MUNDANE THING? OTHERWISE HOW WOULD YOU KNOW YOU DID IT" getting in the way and spoiling the moment.

When they added achievements to Star Trek online, it made the client freak out for a couple of minutes while it unlocked them all.
2010-08-15, 8:13 PM #89
I see it in the reverse - I have now at least something to show for beating a game.

Beating the game, sure...
Doing challenging things, sure
It's getting achievements for every mundane little thing that annoys me to buggery.

If they only gave them to you for doing great/unusual things then I would love them. Hell I go back and play certain games to get the extra achievements (though I rarely get them all, some of them are -too- ridiculous). I just don't want pop-ups happening every time I step on a bug, especially when I'm getting into the story/scenery/whatever.

I liked the one for pressing "Start" at the beginning of The Simpsons Game.

What games do this? What games are story driven but have popups for every little thing?

I'll bite: Force Unlimited.

Every time you beat a boss and the cutscene starts, up pops your little achievement fanfare.

Not that it annoys me, but it's one that does it.
2010-08-16, 7:56 AM #95
That was a serious question, by the way. I don't think I've played a serious story driven game that had achievement notifications on screen while I've been playing. Portal has achievements but I don't remember then occurring during the game. Maybe its because the only way you could get the achievements is to go out of your way (like destroying all the cameras).

I don't find them that intrusive at all tbh. I'm mainly playing games that I can hit in 15 minute blasts while Fred's asleep, so story driven games are going to fall by the wayside somewhat...

Soulcalibur 4, "Start of a New Era" achievement: 5g for watching the opening cutscene. I don't think you even have to press start at the title screen.

That's awesome.

XD
2010-08-16, 8:16 AM #99
Apparently there's an Avatar: The Last Airbender game that only has 5 achievements and you can get them all within the first minute of playing...
2010-08-16, 8:19 AM #100
I remember my boss from 2 jobs ago telling us all to rent King Kong because you got 1000 points for finishing it on easy.

And yes, he was a tool.
2010-08-16, 8:25 AM #101
On X-Box, isn't there an option to disable those popups anyway? So it doesn't show them?

My brother rented that game and did it just for achievements. There's 7 chapters IIRC, and there's 7 achievements. One for each chapter. Yeah.

I think Valve have got the formula about right for achievements. Funny, distracting, flippant but satisfying.
2010-08-16, 8:32 AM #103
I don't understand people who whore achievements. The only game I care about them in is TF2, and I don't focus on earning them. I like when they just happen naturally.

The other day, I got the one where you shoot a person carrying the intel with the huntsman. I hate the huntsman with a blood red passion, but it was fun getting the achievement, not knowing it even existed.

i'll admit to borrowing this game to see how much time i wasted getting the easiest 1000 gamerpoints ever

including boot up time for the 360, loading the disc, getting to the menu, loading the first level, skipping cutscenes, and spamming the b button until i got the achievements... it all took about 3-4 minutes

easiest 200 ever is Dash of Destruction (free game sponsored by doritos) the only thing that could get in anyone's way on that one is not having 2 controllers (need to play the multiplayer at least once and no online) i had that one completed in under an hour
eat right, exercise, die anyway

Haha, that Avatar game isn't even close to an exaggeration. Check out the video on this page:

I don't understand the whole achievement points whoring stuff either. Remember when you actually unlocked stuff for rewards? :P
nope.

I've noticed a lot of newer 360 games (especially XBLA games) have started having avatar clothes and pets as rewards for certain things. While it's not ingame content, it's still better than achievements I think.
2010-08-16, 2:31 PM #108
Well to be fair a lot of the time the action that unlocked an achievement is usually something that provides an in-game reward as well. The rest of the time they're generally challenges which people would probably be messing around trying regardless (e.g. that Night Glider achievement in Arkham Asylum, for one glide of over 100m).

Besides which, I'm sure I'm not the only person who finds that little "pop" satisfying enough as it is.
2010-08-16, 4:01 PM #109
On the other hand, I absolutely hate games that make you unlock basic gameplay content. See : Burnout Revenge. In order to play tracks in local multiplayer, you have to unlock them in single player. This wouldn't be a problem if there were a handful of unlockable tracks and a lot of 'free' tracks. Instead, it's the other way around.

It's nice when the developers actually put effort into the achievements. When they are clever, and they have interesting icons, and such. Good : Epic. Bad : Ubisoft. Specifically the AC / PoP team. Why does every achievement have the same icon?
2010-08-16, 4:15 PM #110
To be fair, Revenge was the low point of the series. :P
nope.
2010-08-16, 4:25 PM #111
Oh man, Gears of War has the best achievement names ever.

My love for you is like a truck.
2010-08-16, 5:57 PM #112
They have unique icons too. Really that's all my gripe is. They don't have to be GOOD (see : Mass Effect 2) they just have to be UNIQUE.

I didn't specify story driven, just when I get into the story, like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, and Red Dead Redemption (which can be argued to be story driven). It's intrusive and distracting.

Argued? Red Dead Redemption is about as thick on story as it's possible for a game to be without being a novel instead.

Seriously if they bother you so much just ignore them, or don't play. Simple as that. Is it really a big deal?

Yeah, that's the ticket. Just don't play videogames if achievement notifications bother you.

Better idea that doesn't make you a moron: Just turn off notifications.

No, it's not a big deal, I had no idea that I wasn't allowed to state an opinion on a forum, my sincerest apologies to all.
The simple fact, zanardi, is that we were having a perfectly fine discussion until you came in with your childishness (and even after, till I addressed your post). If you don't like me complaining, ignore it or don't read threads.
Course the same could be said about me regarding your post, the thread was going fine till then.

Well I would have just ignored your post but you posted almost back to back about how much you hate achievements and all that.. I mean seriously, the "achievements" that are points based, you get more points for harder achievements and lesser points for the easier ones, usually... and this thread is going just fine.

So now the problem is I engaged in a conversation after stating a dislike for achievements? I don't see what your point (heh) about points has to do anything, but whatever.
