For me the title doesn't bold but the icon next to the title changes. Single closed envelope means no new posts. Open envelope with pieces of paper sticking out means new posts.
Little green arrow means you've posted in it (stupid bright little arrow)

Oh, and the icons colour changes too, grey if it's old or light blue for new posts. It's just that the colour difference is a bit on the subtle side

Threads with new posts are bolded just like they had before. Nothing changed there.
2011-04-02, 7:01 AM #43
Oh, so they are!
Might be my imagination or just because the colour is different, but the difference doesn't seem as noticeable as before

Those of you on mobile devices will be happy to hear that the latest version of VB also had a mobile view. I have installed it and enabled it. It should automatically detect and use it for you, but if you wish to force it, you can pick it like any other style from the bottom selector.

It's also pretty lightweight for those who can't stand the current theme.

I haven't had time to colorize it yet, however.

Mobile theme is win.

CM, the threads are the worst. It's where I spend most of my time (reading) and there's a huge bright date bar between every post. Used to be the date was included with the post or something. Also all the info under each person's name is really lame... who cares about location, post count, join date, etc.? We should focus on what people say not how long they've been here.

I like the new look TBH.

You do remember that post counts were there in the old theme as well right? Besides, this was the default. I could actually turn on a bunch more pointless crap.

I'm being very careful how I change things on the forum this time around. I am doing my best to edit it in the way VB wants us to, so that when we update in the future, a lot of time and effort is saved. This means avoiding template edits where possible. It'll get fixed, I just need time to hunt down all the variables responsible for most of this stuff. The format for styles changes SIGNIFICANTLY from VB3. It's not as simple as just editing a CSS file anymore.

I like the update and the new theme.

Yeah we always had the post count, it just used to be in binary or something, but when you hovered over it you still got your real number.
Revealing location is new, but it's hardly a concern, in fact I kinda like it, but only because some people like CM (and myself) have amusing(ish) locations >_>

Mine shows my age. I put my location back when I still had dialup... In 1999.

It had some meaningless series of digits that were meaningless and weren't prefixed with the word "Posts:" which is a significant difference.

Seems like using css to turn stuff off would be the easiest. Looking at the source I see:

Code:
<dl class="userinfo_extra">
					<dt>Join Date</dt> <dd>May 2004</dd>
					<dt>Location</dt> <dd>Australia, New York New York</dd>

					<dt>Posts</dt> <dd>5,551</dd>

				</dl>

You could just set dl.userinfo_extra { display: none; } and get rid of it all in one fell swoop.

Edit: ooh... that code tag looks awesome... heh
2011-04-02, 10:27 AM #56
Like I said, I don't want to do that.

A. There's a correct way to remove it, which is to simply disable the location info.
B. It would also remove the posts, which will later be put into hex code format like before.
C. The code would still be there, it would just be hidden. Browsers which struggle with CSS would fail there.
D. It would still be doing a query to get that information, which is less efficient.
E. Editing CSS directly requires template edits, which means I would have to edit that class in multiple places to truly get rid of it.
F. Extraneous template edits means more work later when a VB update changes those templates.
G. Finding the correct CSS template is a pain in of itself.

In short, I don't want to do easy fixes, I want to do this correctly, which is why it is taking me longer. Kthnxbai

No, it had a post-count in hex, which you could hover over to see the 'real' number, there's very little difference.

Stir things up in a community which is based on familiarity. How could have anything possibly went wrong. This boot-camp green is pretty annoying, TBH. Can we have the old theme back? Thanks.

Thanks for putting in the work for the update.

The thing I miss most is having a link back to the forum section at the bottom of the thread. I don't mean the Quick Navigation deal, an actual link (breadcrumbs?) like there is at the top of the page.
"Flowers and a landscape were the only attractions here. And so, as there was no good reason for coming, nobody came."

I agree about having breadcrumbs at the bottom, I can do that and will. (We didn't have that before though, FYI :P)

LOOK AT ALL THESE FEATURES. I might actually use multiquote now.

Alternatively, you could click the fancy 'top' button.

The mobile theme is quite nice. It could use massassi colors, but the nice streamlined view is refreshing.

I never commented on your future plans because they didn't distract me from my daily Massassi experience (TM), and I was kind of hoping that you'll either a) implement everything so well that there would be barely any noticeable difference at all or 2) not implement. Apparently, you chose the middle ground. :P At least the spoiler tags make the text green, huh?

I found one thing that kinda sucks, there's no way to go back to the discussion forum from the mobile theme without going to the main forum section first.

VB said: upgrade or die.
CM chose upgrade, I support this choice

Well, if it was upgrade or die, then it had certainly been the right choice. No forum's worth a life. Other than that, I still think it'd be nice if we could have the classic green color theme back, if at all possible.

Well thanks for the info on this, I'm glad you let me know wtf that weird number was because I truly had no idea. I thought it was some weird random number that the forums added for some computer-scientific reason.

It sounds like vb sucks worse than I remember it. There seriously isn't a global css file; it's all inline styles? Can't you just add one to a "header" template in one place? Regardless, clearly you know what you're doing.

I'll make another version with some massassi colors, but that's way at the end of priorities.

As Deadman said, VB is phasing out support for VB3 entirely, so it was either upgrade or work with a buggy and possibly insecure forum. I am not shooting for a middle ground, I simply opted to bring the forum up to date FIRST, and work on themes second. I gave Massassi something they could use, and will move on from there. Even the theme as is took a significant amount of work, sadly.

Like I said in my first post, the classic green will also come. I just need to finish one theme first. I think the Olive theme is a more pleasant theme overall, so it was made default, but it will by no means be the only choice when I'm finished. I had to start with one, and Olive was it. Once I have finished Olive, I will be able to use it as a base to make the standard Massassi theme, which will significantly reduce the amount of time it takes.

There are several css files. There are also several header templates, and templates inside those templates. Not to mention stylevars are the preferred way of adding and changing CSS now. When they work properly, they are good, but they can be incredibly aggravating to find anything. In short, VB3 was actually easier to modify than VB4, but VB4 will put up with updates better than VB3 did (VB3 required template fixes regularly).
