How is repeating myself backpedaling?

Hey Mentat, you are completely and totally wrong. As I said, anyone who uses the word nympho when talking about a male, is ignorant, and if you further try to justify your use of it, you become an idiot. The fact that you are defending ignorance is very sad.

Seeing as it was me that made the original mistake I would like to reiterate what Antony has just said.
nope.

I'm confused by Baconfish and Mentat because a nympho, by definition, is female. That Baconfish missed that doesn't give "nympho" new meaning, it just means he's dumb.

Quote:
No, you need to lack a proper understanding of words.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nympho

http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...20nymphomaniac

1. nymphomaniac 15 up, 61 down

Specifically a female addicted to sex.

Cf. Satyriasis: Excessive or abnormal sexual craving in the male. (Source: Merriam-webster's online dictionary, http://www.m-w.com)
A woman who has nymphomania is considered to be a nymphomaniac, and therefore has abnormally high sexual urges.
Funny how Urban Dictionary disagrees with you on the urban usage of words.

Quote:
I was more ripping on Mentat for not understanding words.

Quote:
considering urban-dictionary's entries as submitted by goobers like you, it's no surprise that one entry is unsure of the gender. There are nymphs and there are satyrs. The fact that a lot of urban people (read: morons) don't understand words doesn't change what the words mean.

Quote:
You have obviously missed the point. The fact that a bunch of uneducated fools call men nymphos doesn't make it true, no matter how much you'd like to believe it to be.

Quote:
eg: yes I am aware that there is a sect of people that calls men nymphos. This doesn't change the definition of the word; it makes them wrong.

Quote:
Rendering the actual term meaningless great. It's not like there's no word for males who are addicted to sex. There is.

Quote:
Is it pedantic to assert that up is different from down? Left from right? Red from blue?

Quote:
I never said that people didn't use nympho to mean men. I never said that it was news to me. What I said, and I maintain, is that just because they use a word incorrectly and believe that it is, in fact correct, does not make their usage of the word correct. I don't know why I'm arguing this anymore because you clearly have problems with understanding words.

Quote:
Considering the word form is derived from the Greek word for one set of a lady's lips, I'd say it's safe to assume the the word is decidedly female.

nym·pho·ma·nia
noun \ˌnim(p)-fə-ˈmā-nē-ə, -nyə\
Definition of NYMPHOMANIA
: excessive sexual desire by a female
— nym·pho·ma·ni·ac noun or adjective
— nym·pho·ma·ni·a·cal adjective
Origin of NYMPHOMANIA
New Latin, from nymphae inner lips of the vulva (from Latin, plural of nympha) + Late Latin mania mania
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nymphomania

Q.E.D.

You can argue all you want. You can claim that I'm back pedaling or changing my story. What's really happening is you cannot admit defeat.

Man, you were totally right. It's not as if I said the same thing over and over.

We're not debating over the proper definition of the word "nymphomaniac" or "nympho". It's a given that everyone knows this & I've gone to irritating lengths to explain the fact that it all boiled down to a joke. We're arguing over whether or not Mr. Spruce knew that a lot of people use the word for both men & women (before he was told so by me). His initial post on the matter shows that either he didn't or that he was pretending that he didn't. He then backpedaled by saying that he knew all along when he was called out on it.

Also, your opinion on the matter is rather ignorant. Whether or not one uses the word "nympho" to describe men or women is hardly a litmus test for intellect.

No, jackass, it's a litmus test for ignorance. If someone points out to you that you're wrong, and you defend yourself, then you become an idiot. Do we need to debate the definition of ignorance too?

I'm not even sure what anyone is arguing anymore. Antony, Roger Spruce, you're right, of course the definition of nympho is exclusive to women, but I have heard people use it to refer to men (or men use it to refer to themselves) not because they're morons, [EDIT: or even ignorant, since I certainly don't want to put words in anyone's mouth] but because it is the closest approximation to what they're trying to get across. The purpose of language is to express an idea, and that got the job done. (Also they were among friends who knew they were intelligent, not in a professional or academic situation) Anyway, my point is, for the love of god, just let it go. We all agree that nymphomaniac is a term to describe a woman with a significantly higher-than-average interest in engaging in sexual activities.

Roger Spruce - it is absolutely pedantic to still be arguing the point when everyone knows what he meant.

Mentat: it's equally ridiculous for you to still be arguing your point. You made a joke that didn't work because you used a word completely incorrectly to make it. Instead of just going "yeah, that didn't really work" you fought them on a point you have absolutely no ground in.

Since no one is denying the dictionary definition of the term, and you guys will never agree on your opinions of people who use it in a way not in accordance with the correct and proper usage, how's about we shake hands and let it go.

(I know this never works, but I always try anyway)

We're apparently arguing two different things here because mine has been consistent and I have proven it repeatedly. If your reading comprehension were a tad better, you would have also seen the post where I admitted that I was giving you **** for not knowing the proper usage of the word.

Obviously, the only way to settle this is to give all of us an opportunity to engage in a threesome with sexy women (and men for those that desire) and study what a nympho means ourselves.

Since, "nympho" is an abbreviation for "nymphomaniac" here's another excerpt from Urban Dictionary.

Quote:
1. nymphomaniac 1358 up, 152 down

Hypersexuality: a female whose sex drive is obsessively high. Considered a mental illness, coloqiually means a horny girl. Not to be confused with slut or skank where one's sexual dignity is pathetically low, nymphomania is simply related to an abnormally high sex drive.

Your argument that the number one entry for "nympho" is worthless. It is no more valid than if someone were to edit a Wikipedia article to say that Abraham Lincoln beat Optimus Prime in a fist fight.

Hear, hear!

And sugarless, yours is the kind of sense more people need. Unfortunately, (A) you can't force someone to be mature, (B) the sort of nonsense on this thread makes great entertainment (why else do people watch reality shows?), and (C) Geb's comment makes even MORE sense than yours, which I didn't think was possible.

Er, I didn't think that it was possible for someone to make more sense than your comment, NOT that I didn't think it was possible for Geb to make sense...

No, he didn't, you're confusing Optimus Prime with Godzilla. It was the Pope who fought Prime. (He kicked Prime's can, too!)
2011-04-26, 7:27 PM #100
no you're confusing things... Godzilla burned Rome (Nero got blamed) the Pope defeated Goldar and Abraham Lincoln most certainly beat Optimus Prime in a fist fight

the Civil War was a coverup for the Licoln/Prime fight

Haha thanks! I enjoy fights like these if they're somewhat short lived, but after a few pages it moved past entertaining. Sort of like how watching one or two episodes of Bridezillas is hilarious, but watching any more than that makes you angry at the world for allowing people like that to exist.

(though I do know what it's like getting so wrapped up in a debate you don't even know or care what you're fighting about anymore)

But you're right. Geb wins.

I knew that Nymphs are female, but didn't know that the technical term "nympho" was strictly feminine. I was ignorant, and probably won't continue calling sex-obsessed males "nymphos" anymore, even if the term was used colloquially anyway. I don't want people to think I'm also implying a particular man is feminine as well as sex obsessed, so I won't continue using the term ignorantly. (I think that makes you wrong Mentat.)

Anyone that's still arguing about the definition of the word nympho obviously hasn't been reading since the first page when that issue was resolved.

Quote:
Imagine for a moment that you're like most of the people in the world & aren't always concerned about the strict definition of words & that a nympho can be both a guy & a girl (in urban-speak this is typically the case). That would open up the possibility that "tight young nymphos" translates to "2 adolescents with tight ass-holes". You have to use a little imagination & be capable of having a little fun to do this though.

It's quite obvious here that I stated that I wasn't using the word with the strict definition in mind. Anyone who pretended that the issue of definition wasn't resolved after this post on the 1st page is an ******* & a troll & can go **** themselves.
