So, Star Wars blu rays.

Is there deleted footage of a rebel vs. Stormtrooper fight in the Endor bunker? I can't seem to confirm except on that deleted-footage trailer for the set.

That would be neat since I always thought the bunker seemed smaller than intended.

I watched the original (not the original original, but you get the idea) Star Wars the other night and it looks FOOKUGLY on blu-ray. The colours have been obsessively tinkered with, probably a lameoid attempt to get it looking more like the prequels (it just looks rubbish).

I'm too scared to watch Empire, for fear that it too has had its aesthetics raped to oblivion.

I wouldn't recommend the blu-rays unless you like the prequels (which look fantastic). The special features aren't all that either, in fact the DVD features were better.

Yes there is, it's quite a lengthy bit of footage in fact. There was a bit that made me laugh:

Han calls an Imperial Officer a "twit".

Hmm, I dunno, the screenshots on this BluRay review look pretty good. And the PT screenies in 1080p look even better (OT not that much).

First thing I thought of when I opened this thread: OMG fanboys want to buy Star Wars again? How many frickin' copies do you need?

My second thought: OMG fanboys complaining about every little thing again? Why can't you just frickin' enjoy it and be more tolerant?

My third thought: OMG I'm being intolerant of the fanboys' intolerance again? Why must I be a frickin' hypocrite?

Haha, seriously, though. My only real complaint about changes is one that as already done a while ago: the different music at the Ewok party ending RotJ. And that's really 'cause I grew up with the old music and am used to it.

I do tend to be an uncritical viewer and reader; Geb has called me on this many times, and I'm slowly developing a little bit of a critical side for movies and books. Not much, though, and why should I? Being critical of a film just detracts from my enjoyment of it.

That's my two creds.
2011-09-13, 6:53 AM #126
Yeah I'm never really critical of a film, I just gauge something on how much I enjoy it. That said the odd Star Wars change does annoy me a little.
nope.
2011-09-13, 8:12 AM #127
So how about that rumour?

There was this supposedly leaked video of the OT bluRays going around in which Vader yells 'No. Noooo!', when the emperor is zapping Luke at the end of RotJ.

Is it true that Lucas altered the scene, or was this a hoax? (As I suspect it is)

I think where people are drawing the line is that some of these "changes" are 100% unnecessary. The Vader "Noooo" thing was specifically added into those movies to say "HEY, I MADE A NEW TRILOGY. RHYME AND POETRY, REMEMBER?". Same thing with all his other prequel references like adding a Sebulba character into jabba's palace. I don't think anyone really is gonna complain about the extra stormtrooper bunker footage, or the Luke building the lightsaber scene, just because those scenes actually make sense and answer a question.

All the other changes just make the viewer remember how awful the new prequel trilogy is. What exactly does Vader screaming "Noooo, NOOOOOO" add to that scene. The beauty of it was Vader being silent, and we didn't need to hear any words to figure out what was going through his head. For me, it completely ruins one of the best moments in the entire story. I will never be able to watch that scene again without thinking about Revenge of the Sith and just how awful that movie, and in specific, that "Nooooooooo" scene was. What purpose does adding a Dug add other than to ask "Hey, remember Episode 1?". It's cheap and gimmicky way to connect the movies. And in the end, all I'll say in response to that question is "Hahah, oh yeah, man, Episode 1 sucked balls", which probably isn't the response that Lucas is going for.

Bah, ordered the set anyhow (found it for cheaper). Maybe someday I'll get bored enough to re-encode the films on my HD and mess around with the audio tracks (maybe even with video in RotJ).

As for the next upcoming release whenever it's gonna occur, well, by then they better refer to the PT as 'TODOA Prequels' and the OT as 'TODOA Sequels'. :colbert:

Well I watched Empire and, thankfully, nothing was altered from the DVDs and the picture quality was mostly excellent!

The lightsabers still look weird in the duel though. I dunno how Uncle George can justify sticking CGI rocks in front of R2 or a Dug in Jabba's palace and not bother to fix the dodgy-looking sabers and some of the jump cuts in Episode IV.

Wtf...one of the deleted scenes is 1:35 more of the podrace wager...wasnt that scene long and confusing enough?

I'm assuming there's a path around those rocks for R2?

I don't really see the point of that at all.

Because George Lucas.
2011-09-13, 10:08 PM #138
But what exactly did this even accomplish? It was like they were trying to cover up an error in the film (like a microphone or stage light showing) but nothing was even there!

George Lucas just changes things for the sake of changing them at this point, it adds nothing and in fact takes away from the movie 99% of the time, the other 1% it doesn't matter at all.

The thing about the rocks is that they disappear in the rear and wide shots.

They also look really rubbish and are very distracting.

He's most certainly addicted to fiddling with star wars.
I really don't think he'll ever be satisfied with it.

Quote:
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

  • There are computer-generated rocks in front of R2-D2 while he’s hiding in the canyon; however, they’re “magically not there” after he comes out of hiding
  • Obi-Wan’s fake “Krayt Dragon” roar is once again altered and it sounds “hideous”; keep the mute button at the ready
  • Greedo shoots first – again – but this time with slightly fewer frames than the previous release
  • Luke’s lightsaber while training on the Millennium Falcon is back to being “white” and “blue” as it was originally – it is no longer pale green, per the 2004 DVD release

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

  • Flames have been added to the probe droid crater
  • Most of the blue tint on Hoth is gone
  • The Wampa arm is “fixed” — whatever that means — but it’s still imperfect
  • R2-D2’s once black panels are now blue in space
  • A la the DVD release, Emperor Palpatine – via hologram – is still played by Ian McDiarmid in his Revenge of the Sith makeup

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

  • The static shot of C3PO and R2-D2 approaching Jabba’s palace has been replaced by a “wide pan with a huge door”; the door is now peppered with laser blast impacts
  • Han Solo’s “carbonite thaw” is now CGI
  • A computer-generated “Dug” from the prequels (Sebulba, the evil racer who podraced Anakin in The Phantom Menace, was a dug) is seen walking across the screen after Luke infiltrates Jabba’s palace; the dug looks “really fake, like it was [added at the] last minute”
  • Wicket the Ewok now has computer-generated, blinking eyes
  • Darth Vadar says “No” several times as he picks up Emperor Palpatine and tosses him into the Death Star reactor core; the “Nos” seem to be sampled from The Empire Strikes Back and Revenge of the Sith, respectively

Anyone found screenshots of this dug in Return of the Jedi? Why is the carbonite thaw CGIed?

Ah, at least he made one good fix. The old version of that was ass-ugly looking, even by the standards of its day.

-Speaking of glaring mistakes that desperately need fixing despite what butthurt fanboys may think, did they fix how the TIE fighters during the battle of endor would often just "pop in" like a video game with poor draw distance? That always seemed like a huge oversight to leave in the Special Editions.

Just finished watching Jedi (watched all of them now).

Don't get how after many versions and all the tinkerings, those Boba Fett mirrored shots in Jabba's palace (where his antenna magically changes sides on his helmet) are still present.

Vader's "Noooo!" isn't all that bad actually when viewed in context of the film.

The Ewoks only have CGI eyes where LucasFilm/ILM could be bothered to add them.

And yes, Han's defrosting effect is quite nice.
