So I got mugged by a guy with a can of raid.

Edmonton has a high homicide rate because we have a lot of people from Somalia.

Oops. I mean, we have a lot of people who have "high-risk lifestyles."

Umm.. honestly.. Not trying to be an ass, but why would you let someone have your phone because they have a can of raid? Was this guy like huge and intimidating or something? I would have told him to f--- off. Then if he pressed the issue, I'd probably have tried to tackle him, or I'd have run away. Or at least yelled for help or SOMETHING. I just can't imagine taking a mugger seriously who has nothing but a can of Raid.

That said, sorry you got your phone kiped. Hopefully they get the guy and confiscate it. (but since it's just your phone, they probably won't do anything.)
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

He had a can of poison pointed at him, Sarn. Tibby got mugged by the Joker.

-Also, "high-risk lifestyles" usually means ravers and bathhouse goers, doesn't it?
2012-01-31, 11:38 PM #44
It's Edmonton.

Tibby got mugged by a heroin or meth addict. He sold it to get a fix. It's now owned by Redd Alert or the Hells Angels.

Mystery solved.

The lesson we all need to learn here is this: If you take hydroxycut, you become immune to the effects of bug spray in the eyes, or you just become stupid enough to not care about them.

I would have closed my eyes and turned my head quicker than his brain could have told his finger to pull the spray nozzle. But the time the poison was flying, I'd have been bolting. If he got physical and I had no choice he might get steel in his torso.
2012-01-31, 11:58 PM #47
Yeah, dude, I can tell you, I'd totally act like a hollywood movie badass if someone was holding a can of compressed poison in my face. I'd duck out of the way before he could spray me, and if I didn't run away, I'd probably roundhouse kick that can out of his hand so fast he wouldn't know what happened. Then I'd go all UFC on him and put him in some kind of hold, or I'd do something similarly badass up until the point where he sprayed me in the eyes with it and proceeded to pull out a knife and stab me to death. Over my phone.

Yeah, that's what I would do.

Who the hell risks even minor injury over a phone?

Oh, right. Sarn.

I was surprised it took this long for a Sarn to crawl out of the woodwork, I had expected it to happen much sooner.
Anyway yeah, **** even the slightest risk of injury over an object.

Yes, because the first choice of Hollywood badasses is to close their eyes, turn their heads, and run.

I think if the dude had a knife that's what he'd be threatening with.

That's still riskier than complying...Tibby is absolutely right in that an object (like his phone) is not worth risking one's health for. He did the smart thing, as far as I'm concerned. Of course everyone uses their own sense and if, after assessing the situation, you decide that you can outrun the guy and you think he doesn't have anything more dangerous on him, then go ahead if you so choose...but even when you succeed, I'll agree with Tibby.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Yeah, they never run, do they? It would really be cool if some movies had parts where someone is trying to hurt the hero character and they are trying to get away, usually by running, but sometimes they could even get into cars to get away faster. I don't know why no one does this in movies.

I think you just described the Terminator movies.

No, Deadman. No badass character has ever run away in the history of cinema. This never happened in hundreds of movies.

Hundreds? Bless you no, there were only two Terminator movies.

ONLY TWO
AND DEFINITELY NO SERIES EITHER

(actually T4 was ok despite plot abysses)

Just to be sure, Raid is fly spray, right?
nope.

I've not seen T4, but I maintain that T3's ending was awesome.

Am I missing something, or is your link showing "total crimes", not "crime rate"?

You're all acting like Raid is hydrochloric acid. Tibby got jacked in the most idiotic way imaginable and was never in any danger.

The chart also excludes China and India, probably because it would make America look better.

JM, thanks. Exactly my point. I just couldn't imagine being afraid enough of a guy with bug spray to hand over my phone to him.. Unless, like I said, he was big and intimidating.

Well if you can't carry a gun maybe you should consider wearing splash goggles. That would have been pretty awesome if you delayed your mugger for a second and donned splash goggles. 'What you got now punk!'

Sucks about being mugged. As for how dangerous it would have been not to comply, I think it depends on the person. If you're confident you can stand your own, then by all means, do take the chance. If you're not, doing that will just get you in more trouble.

Personally, I probably would not have handed the guy my phone unless I was either intoxicated or the guy was huge and scary. If it was a knife in his hand, then that'd be a different story. So I'm kind of with Sarn here. But again, chances are me or Sarn probably wouldn't even get into this situation because we're physically pretty big.

OH YEAH BABY.

So was it the wasp-killer kind (shoots a thick stream quite a few feet away) or was it just plain old aerosol spray? Cause I wouldn't be too worried about the latter. The former could be used like some kind of ghetto-pepper spray and mess your eyes up pretty good I imagine...
2012-02-01, 9:53 AM #74
I love the mentality that if a guy isn't big and intimidating that he can't do physical harm to you. You know who isn't big and intimidating? Manny Pacquiao. You know who could knock your ass out with a single punch? Manny Pacquiao.

He's also a trained fighter, which most people are not, but hell, who has ever heard of a trained fighter who ended up homeless or turned to a life of crime? Even better, who has ever heard of a trained killer ending up homeless or committing crimes? I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty confident that the homeless people/criminals I've seen aren't military veterans or anything!

Or maybe you can't judge someone by their appearance. It's also unfair to discount desperation in a scenario like this. Or you can just talk about how you woulnd't be afraid of him, or how you'd do something other than hand over your stuff. I'm sure at least one dumbass here has a concealed carry permit and thinks that makes him Wyatt Earp, so you'd just pull out your gun and smoke this *******, right? Then a cop somewhere would just say "A clear cut case of self defense" and let you go about your business. That's how **** always happens in real life.

Big or small, who gives a **** if you only see a can of raid. That would SUCK in your eyes. Chances are the dude was on something. While it's entirely likely that shouting and making a scene would have scared him away, theres also a chance that he wasn't just carrying raid.

Probably have tried to tackle him? **** that.

Im sorry tibby. i am really not trying to give you a hard time. it just sounds funny. i've been mugged before and i know it is hard to make split second decisions in those situations and honestly you probably did the safest thing... but it was an aerosol can!!!
