So I got mugged by a guy with a can of raid.

I'm pretty sure none of us know how Tibby handles stress and confrontation or whether he feels up to out-running/out-fighting a stranger or whether he had a clue of the consequences of getting a can of raid in the face. And we know even less about the RAID-robber but sure, let's prejudge and second guess everything he did in a situation that ended with no one getting hurt and the robber walking away with just a bricked iPhone.

Once again, im not 100% sure it was raid, it's just what comes to mind based on the size of the bottle. It could have been some insanely deadly industrial chemical or something I honestly have no idea, it could have also been pepper spray (which I most definitely would have run away from) but I was kinda distracted to read the bottle.
Large black bottle, red font- probably not a good thing to get in the eyes.

Yeah that's a very fair point. It's easy to have 20/20 hindsight.

Um, bear spray?
2012-02-01, 12:48 PM #85
Maybe? I don't know I live in the city. Wouldn't know it if I saw it.
Googling however makes it look plausible. Again if I had known it wasn't anything deadly I probably would have run for it, but well.

Yeah I'd definitely give up the phone in those circumstances

And this thread now has me imagining Tibby squinting at the can pointed at his face and then googling it on his phone.

No, it's just that I have a very low opinion of consumer goods and the lengths one should go to in order to protect them.

It's not that I think raid is dangerous; it's that it's just a damn phone.

2012-02-01, 1:45 PM #90
As I'm thinking about it, it's entirely possible that I would have handed over my phone and stuff.. But I probably won't post the specifics about it after. :P "Hey I got mugged" rather than "Hey I got mugged by a guy with bug spray"

The nice thing about bear spray is that it is effective up to 25 feet so that if someone is running away from you they'll get a lungful of it and probably die.

I don't know how this stuff is supposed to work, but wouldnt the attacker be equally screwed unless he was wearing a gas mask. Sorta like mugging someone with a grenade.

I guess he'd get hit a little. I think it depends on the minimum range of the can. Whether or not he'd care really depends on the kinds of drugs he's on.

I think the lesson we've all learned is to avoid the part of Edmonton between the river and Yellowhead Trail.

Edit: I'm being serious about all of this btw. The reason Edmonton has a high crime rate is because of the unfortunate combination of a large warzone immigrant population and being the closest large city to the oil sands. That means drugs and gangs. Murders are mostly isolated to Somalis (some of them like to kill their own kids too!) and bored rig workers who accidentally kill each other in front of bars. It's not actually that bad for the most part, as long as you avoid the "Murder Belt." You literally walk across a 30 foot bridge and the crime rate drops to zero. [Un]fortunately Tibby goes to school on the wrong side of it.

Let me guess, that's all of Edmonton. :v:

I was walking home from a bus stop at a park, it was empty, and I was greeted by a can of bear spray.

Bear spray, huh? Sounds like Batman took your phone. Probably an emergency. Good thing he wasn't using shark repellent. That would have uchked you up proper.
My blawgh.

Twice!

No seriously, I would've given over my phone, too. I am not about to lose my vision because some crazy mother****er wants my phone. You have no idea what is in the can. I may have turned around and run, though as soon as I realized what was going on. Speaking of which, what'd he say? I've only been verbally mugged once and the people who were doing it were drunk and not very threatening (2 hobos wanted us to buy free newspapers from them or they'd cut us with steak knives they for some reason had?) Every other time the person just takes what they want. I can't imagine what you say to someone to not give them a chance to bolt.

so did you have your phone out at the time or did he just assume you had one?
