alrighty...

first of all, thanks to everyone who's posted here and given me feedback. It's really helped and encouraged me to keep working on it.

Unfortunately, I have to spend this next week modeling 24-7 for an animation that I've been helping create. If it makes it, it'll be shown on tv, which would be awesome. I'm not stopping work on this robot, just posponing it a week.

I have some ideas for texturing AND a (I think) cool idea for a location. I'll post them here as soon as I get working on them.

thanks for your support guys.

I got a bit of time to work on some new stuff.

Here's the environment for the animation. Please note, this is NOT even close to being the finished model. Chances are I won't use any of the model as the final, but I wanted to make a low-poly one just to see how it would look. I did some photoshop stuff with it so you can get the general idea. Basically it'll be a big sphere, which the robot will drive around and around on, driving the residents crazy. The upper half will be day, while the lower half will be night (if that makes sense).

I'm going to need to have grass on the upper half of the globe, around the telephone poles (like I drew in). Here is a VERY rough grass test:

Comments, suggestions?

yes, the dirt'll look much better in the final. In that picture I was just seeing if I could make a path in the middle of the grass, I didn't work at all on the look of the dirt. I'll hopefully post some mroe pictures soon.

I don't think a moon of that size would be orbiting around that planet, I think the planet would be orbiting around that moon. Unless that's really a moon and the planet is just tiny and it rotates around that moon... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif] In other words, I sugguest shrinking the size of that moon, or, making the planet larger.

I'll change the size of the moon. Hopefully I can post some new, more interesting stuff soon.

I've been storyboarding as well, would you guys be interested in seeing them?

I'm actually thinking about taking that link down. I'm not really happy with the way it turned out...

EDIT: new link, updated movie:

Due to bandwidth, if you watch it, I would really appreciate it if I got feedback, whether good or bad. (I know I'm no professional at animating) Not yet at least...

Its not bad but it looks kind of unnatural. I think it is because no part of a living creature is ever completly still. For instance when his right arm gets to its position it just stops suddenly when it should slow down then move back and forth a little bit, like have the elbow rock back and forth or something. Also I think that having the whole body move side to side slightly would help it look more natural. All of this is assuming you want it to move like a person and seem alive, if you want it to be robotic it is not too bad. However just remember to have the actions overlap, for instance he shifts to the left while he rubs his forehead, not one action folling the other.

I realize that this is just an early test but I think these things will help.

Edit: Sorry I was one movie behind, The third one is much much better but still looks slightly unnatural.

The movements overall are too slow - both the small ones and the big ones. Try to get some arcs on the arm (when he brings it up to his face and then down in front of him to look at it), and break the joints - the wrist, elbow, and shoulder shouldn't move all at once, but successively. Anticipate the suprised jump at the end by bending the knees and moving downward a little before shooting up.

Not bad at all for a first animation.
2004-02-09, 11:05 AM #104
I like the second one, but when he scratches his forehead he just kind of wipes through his head, not really a scratch (Unless it was a wipe :/, but still it appears as if his hand goes into his head. )

mkay...It's been a long, busy week, so I didn't get much done.

I started getting grass into the scene. The grass is near finished, but the path hasn't been worked on at all yet. LOTS of detail left to add to the path and the telephone poles.

i say, make the dirt path half as wide as it is, zoom down a little bit, and make the camera face towards the robots face and waving hand. also, add color like brown wood to the lightposts. (you already mentioned they werent final, but just in case)

thanks for the replies guys

I'll prolly completely re-do the telephone poles, and I might make the path a bit narrower. The camera angle is not going to be used at all in the animation, I just did it real quickly to give you a better idea of the environment.

EDIT: oh, and I forgot to say, I decided to use the chrome car. I just like it a lot better than the black...

yeah, I agree with you on that. I'm doing the sky for these shots differently than I'm going to do it for the final animation, so hopefully it'll look different. I'll do some tests and see how it turns out.

I would suggest perhaps darkening up color on the telephone poles a touch... Other than that, looks awesome, can't wait to see updates.

As for posting in this thread, I have no problem with it. It makes my day when I come online and see this back at the top.
