Looks MUCH better than the first screen. It shows that archi isn't everything. The lighting is fantastical, and the textures look great! It looks more like an asylum than a laboratory.

That looks very good! All you have to do is make the bed physflagged and put a physflagged mattress on it and you'll compete will all those 'modern games'. :P

Yeah, i really liked that first picture too (the beds).. it seamed really freaky to me, how it is dark behind the bed. it's like... what's back there... I dunno... first time one of my own levels actually creeped me out. So I figured I'd post it.

There is no bed.

That vaulted shot reminds me of some Mithraic cultist catacombs I went through in Italy. VERY freaky. Good work!

Wonderful dark atmosphere. One shot back there looked like it could use a cleave to help the lighting on one of the walls a bit...but if this level has the dark ambient sounds to match the visuals its just plain going to be freaky.

Does large amounts of cleaving surfaces for lighting have any large impact on framerate? In my experience the only thing that can really kill it is more adjoins but I haven't really tried doing a ton of cleaving for lighting yet.

Lol I think you should add a secret so you can have some heavy metal music playing in the background, I think that would be SWEET, like Slipknots Duality, I think that would be perfect, but that's just me, reminds me of a prison they would have in a video for a heavy metal song, it's looking really sweet now

Please fix these clipping errors. It'd be a shame to have something like this detract from the rest of the level, especially since it's so easy to fix.

After playing this level last night, I can tell you all that it's the scariest map you'll ever play, hands down. Better than D3, better than Resident Evil, better than Lab.

Is there a way I can get some of those textures? Are they in the texture pack you released for the MP Labratory contest? Could you direct me to that? Thanks
2004-10-09, 10:24 PM #105
No, I am primarily using the MP texture pack mentioned earlier in the thred. I'm not exactly sure of where to get it, but JediKerby is the one that helped me get it.

Absolutely flawless work, Spiral. Very similar to the prison in HL2, just darkier and much more spookay.

How much do you have so far? I'd like to see at least 500 sectors put to use. (given how sparingly you have used them so far) Better yet, I'd reccomend going until you've used up your limit of placed "things", which would be 512. I think that might be a good indicator of how large it should be.

Yes, but I don't want to add empty rooms, and bland hallways to detract from the overall level.

What do you mean by that? The sparing use of sectors/limit based on "thing" usage? If so, ignore my comments. Just keep creating it as would make sense, and consider it finished when it feels complete. Being some sort of assylum, I imagine that would narrow down how big it could get, even if it's part laboratory... Any comments on the plot?

Considering the way the gameplay on this map is going to be, I'd suggest keeping it big enough to where players can avoid eachother, but small enough to where they're going to accidently run into eachother, instead of sneak up on eachother.

Oh, and I had a thought today; you should include a creaky-footstep, and maybe throw a small mod on that causes the player to move slower. It'd be 10x scarier.

A few ambient sounds, though... an ocassional (ver ysoft) creeking, crumbling, or metal groan every 10-20 seconds or so... Kinda like Laboratory.
