Kedri and I (and others, I'm sure) already considered doing a game editing site similar to massassi for a lot of games. I even own a really cool/short domain name for it. Unfortunately, it didn't really take off. My heart just wasn't in it. That's the thing, I tried doing sites to get visitors about games that I just wasn't all that interested in. Indiana Jones & the Infernal Machine, Wheel of Time, and Force Commander all come to mind. We branched out because we felt we had to to keep the visitors coming in. It was a mistake and it showed.</font>

Well, what games are you interested in? Don't worry about whether it'd be applicable or not -- just as a first step sort of thing.

And perhaps this is a really bad idea, but have any of us considered Massassi exploring into non-gaming media?

You know, books, movies, solving relationship problems... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I was just pointing out that people kept considering branching out into other games instead of perhaps other media or fields, is all.

Judging by the overwhelming success of the office of mavispoo, self-proclaimed relationship expert, and Flexor, un-certified physician, I'd say a relationship forum isn't going to attract that many people. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I am against Massassi becoming a "Big gaming network." I think that would take way too much time and consistent effort from too many people. It's not reasonable to expect people to do the large amount of work without getting reembursed for their time.
I know people say, "well I already spend hours a day here," but I'm pretty sure that posting levels is a lot less exciting than posting threads.

IMO being a huge site is a great goal for us, but obviously we can't just be one all of the sudden. At this point I would say we need to take it slowly and carefully and get things right. Buy bigger shoes as our feet grow and have shoes that fit - don't get really big ones in anticipation of the future.

</font>

This is what I was thinking. If JK suits you best brian, then you could simply manage the main site and the JK division. If SSam2 pops up, you could work on that for awhile, etc. If you've got dedicated, trustworthy people working on something, it keeps going. I mean, just look at naythn on serious editing... he posted something two months ago. Poor guy.

I'm not saying we should start a zillion little sites, but if theres enough interest in the community and an admin/mod who could handle the task, maybe we could start a new "channel" for that particular game.

Just ideas. What I'm thinking of is kind of like IGN, except for a few different games instead of a few different platforms. Similar with the "central hub" that reports on the community and the most recent happenings of the channels. it could work, it might not. Either way, it's worth making note of while finishing up MII. Even if we only have the JK channel for a year, it could eventually start going somewhere. *shrug*

I think one of the problems with past ventures youve worked on is they werent integrated very well or at all with massassi. seperate forums, seperate everything, seperate user base. no sharing. sharing helps.

Beyond that, t-shirts.

Without a focus on star wars, Massassi just isn't Massassi. I do say that we might try to get some side focus on other popular (and editable) games. After all, many of us here are already playing UT2k4, or other games... I think Massassi should mainly be about Star Wars, but also have large parts for some other major (or obscure) games...

And back to this, I like IGN merely because I enjoy reading the reviews and stuff in it. However, IGN sucks because it's heavy with adds, only updates once a day, and has the whole IGNINSIDER PAY FOR MEMBERSHIP thing that I really don't like. If we go IGN we need
A: different ideas from IGN...a few at least so we're not TOTALLY duplicating them
B: to make sure to keep the community going. I never visit ign forumns, anymore anyway. They keep fluctuating between which ones are free which ones are insider, or when which ones will be free or required, I just gave up trying a year or two ago.

If anyone needs help here, I'd be willing to help out in any shape I can. I do not want Massassi to go anywhere, simply due to the fact that it has one of the greatest audience base, fan base, whatever for a website, and definitely one of the coolest sites I've ever come across in the 5+ years I've been on the internet.

Please, let me help out...

We should explore various options of generating money. Flexor brought up selling t-shirts. I think that's actually a decent idea. Once the paypal system is up and running, maybe we could even hold raffles. People could donate items and people could purchase e-tickets (or something to that effect) for $1 each or something (depending on the value of the item). I'm sure one of our resident programmers could code up a decent system to do this. If not, we could even utilize an existing system.

I would just like to add that I don't see anything wrong with expanding into mods for other games. I wouldn't want to see us expanding into HL2 (an example), but maybe a HL2 SW mod.

Wow...I'm half asleep...I hope this all makes sense. I'll read this again in the morning to make sure. :/

Ok, here's my 2 cents. I've never really contributed anything to massassi. I've always considered myself to be a retarted nerd: someone who understands yet does not know how to, well, anything. During discussion based on idealogy/politics/society I hold my tongue. Because I know my opinions will greatly piss people off. I have that paticular touch. I have respect for Massassi, so I will not debase myself to being a troll. Plus I'm not around much, so probably no one really knows of my existence here, so my 2 cents don't matter much. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I really like massassi.net, it's one of the only sites I visit. Up there with Penny-Arcade! and... not much else. I cannot give any type of monetary aid. I'd love to but, I'm incredibly friggin' poor. I hope massassi does not close, but there is nothing I can do, but please if it must, gice warning. I don't want it to suddenly be gone one day.

And I've made 2 threads about this and always got the brush-off. T-SHIRTS DAMMIT!!!

T-Shirts and other merchandise has been deemed impossible due to copyright laws. Pretty sure that Lucas owns the word Massassi, and as such if we were to be making money off of his copyright we would owe him royalties that we couldn't pay, and he wouldn't lease us the phrase anyways. So we would in the end lose and the site would go down in flames.

Here's an idea. Those who have a server that will keep your files for a VERY long time (or even forever), upload them there and Massassi will link to them that way. Those who don't have a server, and/or not sure how to get one or upload them, can submitt to Massassi's files server. The server problems that Massassi's having could be that Recon is, without telling you, turns off the computer to intall a new bigger hard drive to hold the new files. And of course, there can be problems. You send asking 'What's happening?' and they don't send a reply until they are done and then they say 'Everything is fine!'. Who's with me that it is Bill Gates wipping at their backs... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
Anyway, what about my idea? Anyone who can host a level, do so, submitt 3 links (one to the level, and 2 to the screenshots), people at Massassi tests it to see if it is acceptable and then posts news about the new level.

I would definately buy a Massassi T-Shirt. That idea is even better than just normal donations, because then you're getting something back too as a result.

I think they should be black with a small massassi logo over the right front brest, and we could have a contest for a design to use on the back. Maybe even put the url on the sleeves too.

T-shirts would be great. I'd definitely buy one. Let's not stop there. Let's explore all of our options. We should try to ease the financial burden on Brian as much as possible. There may be no need for him to cover half of the cost.

Posters:

~ The Massassi Map (I'd buy one if my name would finally get on there)
~ Various Massassi logo's

One could think of a hundred different poster ideas.

Calendars:

You could have a different Massassi logo for each month, possibly a contest to achieve that. You could have a level of the week calendar where 4 levels are shown for each month with their authors name. The last page could be an informational section with various data regarding Massassi and its community.

These are but a few ideas. I'm not saying that we should do all of these things, but if there's a demand, it wouldn't hurt. Why stop at breaking even? Brian says he's not interested in making money off of this site. If the Massassi products sold well and Massassi generated even more money than is needed, I'm sure the staff could think of various ways to use it towards the site/community.

I really like the idea of merchandising. I don't have any doubt that all of us here would be very willing to purchase a T-shirt for a sizeable donation ($10-$15US). I also like the idea of a callendar. That would be grounds for a new contest here! I'd probably work overtime on my current level to submit it...
