I think probably one of the most pleasant updates would be a system as in most recent forums whereby one logs in on the main page or whatever, it's cookied, and do away with that whole username/password txtbox nonsense (:

And a quick-reply box can be susprisingly nice to have as well.

A very good idea. JK, JO or JA levels are always better with music, or at least custom sound effects. If there were such forum I'd spend alot of time there helping people with software issues and such. Of course, I'd have to be a mod [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

If you did go through with a design, might I suggest you make it look more jungle-esque. Yavin4 is one big jungle/forest, and our Temple should follow the theme.

Something not unlike this would look good, although it should be darker and have more moss and vines and such.

TheJkWhoSaysNi: that is something we've toyed around with quite a bit, but it would be a HUGE headache. We'd have to pick which registration database to "keep" and then modify the scripts for the opposite one to validate off the other database. Not to mention it would be hard to preserve details because people have all sorts of different nicks across the two. I guess I'd rather keep them separate. Of course, that's not my call. But the technical problems will most likely mean that this issue won't be dealt with in the near future.

I think I speak for all the admins where I say, NEW ADMIN SCRIPT!!!!! Banning someone is a pain. There should just be an option under everybody's name that says "Ban Me!!!!" And then it would send an e-mail that says "You Have Been Banned for....", and then a really funny picture! It would stop ban inquiries [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Hmm, Banning... Well I was banned from the EC so I had to send an inquiry to find out why.. Thankfully it was just someone else on the same proxy as me who was banned! What would be nice is if it could say "$Username: You have been banned for $whatever" instead of "You are banned. Live with it." (Not an exact quote [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] ) Then it would remove confusion around ban inquirys and such.

Massassi needs a purpose to exist - it originally started as an editing site, but there are rarely any new tutorials. Now it's pretty much a level depository with active forums. A few people still edit, but not many; each game released in the series (JA, JO, MotS, JK) dies faster than the one before it. Barely anyone even plays the levels that are completed anymore, and that will only get worse. A forum upgrade or a new site look will not solve any problems other than cosmetic enhancements, because Massassi will still have no real purpose.

Jipe brings up a good point. I know I'm going to work on some JA tutorials, but it would be nice to have a comprehensive, useful list of real editing tutorials or links. The others I've seen are just cluttered with links to other editing sites, which usually don't have much of anything. Maybe something that says, "If you want to do this EXACT thing in your level, go RIGHT HERE:"

...or just go on an ad campaign and convince people to submit their tutorials instead of whoring them on their own sites.

Brian, I really really really really really hate to be a standards nazi, but if we use 100% css for themes (you can use background-image attrib for themed images) then we can just switch css stylesheets for themes. this has the advantage of making it so you can pretty much put a new layout on the site with a new stylesheet. It may be incredible amounts of work in cssing, but its *neat*.

See here:
http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/046/046.css&page=0
http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/043/043.css&page=0
http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/039/039.css&page=1
http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/029/029.css&page=2

It's really neat. Plus Firebird has an icon to switch between css stylesheets when alternates are given (otherwise you can do it with php like csszengarder, or javascript)

Taki does it with javascript here:

Jipe/etc: Of course, what is the main purpose of any site? If you honestly believe sites like jk.net and jkii.net have a purpose other than "to make money" you are sorely mistaken. Luckily, Massassi doesn't exist to make money, it simply exists to feed our addictions [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] That's not to say we would not take money if it was offered (or even pursue ways to monetize the site).

Regardless, Massassi started life as an editing hub. It quickly became clear that since all the editors were here, all their files ought to be here as well (or at least, we should give them an outlet for their releases).

Just because Massassi is no longer THE top site for editors does not mean we should just close shop and give up. Burger King doesn't close down simply because they are behind McDonalds.

As long as the site provides services that people use, it has a purpose.

Now, if you are arguing that Massassi should be more focused, I agree with you. If you think Massassi should have goals that all staffers are continually working towards, I agree with you. If you are saying that Massassi doesn't have enough new content and features, I agree with you. But none of this means we have no "purpose," it just means we lack things that will grow the site.

Instead, Massassi has been in a "maintanence" mode for quite a while. Not much new stuff going on, just posting new files and that's about it. Keeping the fires down and the features up.

This is no problem, except that Massassi hasn't changed and kept up with the times. We are using a design from 1997 and have features that are virtually the same as they were 2 or 3 years ago. Because of this, the traffic has gradually been bleeding off or moving elsewhere.

But I'm willing to bet that once we revive things around here, people will start coming back. Do you think people WANT to regularly go to sites with zillions of annoying, bandwidth robbing ads plastered all over the place? Don't you think people would rather visit a site that respects its users and doesn't force people to register an account simply to get access to browse the forums or download files?

I think we can make tons of improvements and make the site the #1 Jedi Knight series site on the internet (again). Remember, when Massassi first started, there were a TON of well-established sites already (JK.net, JN.com, Sith Temple, JK Outpost, etc.). It took us about a year, but we overtook them and eventually smashed them all traffic-wise. on top of that, we did it all with NO support from LEC (unlike at least some of the competition). But it took a year. There's no reason we can't do it again (and no reason we shouldn't).
