Massassi SP Level Contest
2007-07-25, 4:50 PM #1
I am thinking of having another level contest, but this time a single player level contest. Here is my proposal, I would appreciate any feedback.

1. Any of our "main" games allowed - JK, MotS, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy.
2. Any required patches allowed.
3. Levels will not be released as a pack, but winners will be announced on the main page and will get a special "badge" next to their usernames on the forums.
4. Levels should be small, maybe 5-10 minutes to complete (I don't want people getting in over their heads and not finishing the submissions).
5. Preferably all entrants will post regular updates on project pages on JK Hub.
6. All entrants will be offered judging positions (but you can't vote for your own level). I will work out a simple scoring system at some point in the future if there is interest.

I was also thinking it may be fun to create levels based on the "Ninja Warrior" show on G4TV. Not on the actual obstacles themselves, but on the idea of progressively more difficult but interesting challenges. We could call it Jedi Warrior or something. These levels would be relatively small and easier to create than a full-fledged SP level with a story, cutscenes, etc.

If I could get 5-10 entries, that would make me happy. Is anyone here interested?

I'd be interested, assuming it gets off the ground before school starts in September.

Edit - and uh, I don't really care about the badge thing. I probably don't have the skills to win anyways, but I'm just saying is all.

I'm very interested, especially in the badge thing. Unfortunately, though, the motivation to put work into a map just isn't there... :(

5-10 minutes of play time.

You've piqued my interest; I can make no guarantees as to whether I'll be able to complete anything though (cue Kirby *****ing at me to finish my madamemorial level)

5-10 seems to small. How about 15+?

Maybe playing time should not be limited, just factored in a map's quality?

Yeah. 10 minutes of a decent quality level would probably take me a while, whereas a more experienced editor wouldn't break a sweat over it.

edit - and I don't think we're allowed to use jkhub to blog our JO and JA projects?

I'd be interested. Very interested. Sorta a puzzle JK map, I've wanted to do something like that actually. When were you thinking for a deadline?
gbk is 50 probably

Hmm...Sounds interesting. Can we work in groups? (I sound like a school kid)

I was just thinking this morning how, in a perfect world, I'd have the time to finish the SP series Legacy of Yun.

But I don't.

This could be fun. Count me in.

 GBK working on an SP level?! Crazy!

I'm currently tied up with The Fall of JuzSoft 2; however, I'll see if Darth_Alran would be interested in making his/our level into a "short" for this.

Hmm, this might be an opportunity to flesh out my old "Sneaky *******" trap-based theme for a level.

Sounds like fun :)

I'm trying to put as few limitations on it as possible, in order for people to stay motivated (nothing sucks worse than not being able to do what you want just because some ahole with a computer says so). So, working in groups, yes, 5-10 minutes is a guideline, you can make it longer if you want - the key theme is interesting and unique, not necessarily as long as the LEC/Raven levels. I was thinking 2-3 months, is that long enough? Or 1-2? Feedback requested.

If JK Hub won't allow JA/JO, I'll beat Zeq until he adds it. If not, don't worry about it. We can always use the EC for that (bleck).

I started on my level five minutes ago. Suckers.

I would be nice to have JA/JO stuff updates under their own main page an not getting clustered in JK. Cause I won't pay attention to JO/JA
This is retarded, and I mean drooling at the mouth
2007-07-25, 8:04 PM #20
Can it be Harry Potter themed?
2007-07-25, 8:12 PM #21
Okay, I have two ideas already for SP levels. One will be based on a scene from a famous movie, and the second will be based on a very old game (yes, even older than JK).

I suppose I could allow JO and JA levels on JK Hub...just this once. :S

Minimum of 2 months would be good.

:)

Remember that thing I said about starting my level five minutes ago?

...yeah, I wasn't kidding. You all are already behind. Get moving! :neckbeard:

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I would like to encourage anyone who is interested in this project to work out any narrative/design structures in the Interactive Story Board. I will most definately help out anyone who wants help (as long as there's a "Thanks to Gebohq" in the credits), and hopefully other ISB regulars will chip in as well. :)

Love to see some new levels.
(Can someone remove this title?)

Hm.

Of course, even my 5-10 minute plans fail when there's no coder or texture artist so bleh.

You don't need custom textures or cogs to make a good level.

But of course they can make or break an SP level.
2007-07-25, 11:34 PM #29
:P zeq still hasn't compiled the last two jk hub contest packs, so i wouldn't count on him finishing an entry. :P

i'd be interested in doing it, but i seriously don't think i'd have the time.

I could probably throw something together.
2007-07-26, 12:22 AM #31
5-10 minutes of gameplay would suit an idea for a level I had, I'll see if I can get the time to work on it. Is there any idea of timescale for the contest?
2007-07-26, 12:30 AM #32
Interested in the results but not in participating.

Starting a pool. I'm giving 50:1 odds on 4, scale goes up from there.
2007-07-26, 12:46 AM #33
I would bet my account on six or more.
But then noone would make any levels.
2007-07-26, 12:58 AM #34
i'm gonna do it. i need details. criteria that is well-defined.

Yeah I need more rules... does it have to be Star Wars themed? Can it change core gameplay or does it have to be the same formula as the original game?
2007-07-26, 4:02 AM #36
Well, having already won one Massassi SP contest, I'm a veteran, but as things stand I'm struggling to finish my existing SP project, and if I add another one, it would likely kill 'em both.

Although I'd have some existing bits and pieces of rudimentary architecture from an older, cancelled project and if the rules allowed, I might be able to cook up something using them. But it might be best for the contest to forbid such a thing to maintain equality.

The last two JK Hub contests did not have enough finished levels with which to make packs. My lack of ever making a non-test level is much more of an indicator of my not completing the two SP levels. :D

As always, if you need cog work, I can do it. So, no more cog excuses. :P

Sounds like an interesting idea- When did you have in mind as a preliminary deadline?

It should be pre-August 31st, so my grades don't suffer. :]

Also - custom weapons? Changing core gameplay should, in my opinion, be encouraged. However, keeping the levels Star Wars themed would make them a lot easier to compare in terms of judging.

My idea (which I started work on this lunchtime) is not Star Wars based at all...
