Massassi SP Level Contest
2007-07-28, 10:27 PM #81
I think how he meant it was with sarcasm:
"What? What is this, TACC?"

/topic change
Does anyone remember the massassi "city" project we had going? where we all had a space to build on?

That was so frickin cool.

Yeah, maybe in another engine.
2007-07-29, 12:45 AM #83
Haha, too bad Rock Band isn't out. I'd pick that as my prize. :)

The prize should be an expensive hooker if I win, and a bucket of Duplos if someone else wins.

How many entrants per author? Sorry if this has already been cleared up :)

Contestants will judge the other entries... what if they don't own all the games?

As many as you want.

Never thought of that :o

Well let's be realistic here. How many finished entries will there REALLY be that aren't for JK?

...that's what I thought.

You just gave me all the motivation I needed to work on and finish my JO SP level.

Me. Because negative-space sector editing makes no sense to me.

You're probably just saying that. I find it pretty easy to switch back and forth, but prefer sectors over brushes.

I prefer Unreal editing myself, hell, the only reason why I feel like participating is because I spent too much time working on this level in the past and it could somewhat be a nice testament of mine for JK editing to finish it now. ... Then again the level would for MotS anyway. Must at least finish the legacy of MotS having superior SP levels. Or then not. >.<

Brush editing has the massive advantage that almost nothing is permanent.

In JK, it's much harder to reverse any damage you might do, especially down the line when Undo is no longer an option.

Thus, JK levels require a lot of thought and pre-planning, IMO.
2007-07-30, 12:02 AM #97
True, true. But sector editing has all the flipside advantages to that; sector scaling and sector dragging reacting nicley to neighboring sectors. This makes certain editing situations a comparative breeze.

I think that you'd be better off spending your time working on a map, not debating which type of engine is easier to edit with. They both suck, but they each have advantages that neither really shares.

I'm doing mine in JK because I don't have great amounts of free time, and I don't want to waste what time I do have waiting for a compile to finish.

That being said, GET BACK TO WORK!

I don't think it's fair to continue something you've already done extensive work on.
2007-07-30, 4:42 AM #100
Of course it's fair. This is not the Tour de France. All that really matters is that we get fun, great-looking SP levels to play again! I've always been a SP player, that's what brought me into editing in the first place. I haven't really played JK since SP died on Massassi about what, 5 years ago? Chapeau to Brian for a great initiative.

BTW: I'll gladly participate in funding the prize. If we all chipped in with $5-10 each, we could make the contest a lot more lucrative. Whaddya say?

Hence why ZED now features hundreds of undo levels. :eng101: :D

Which are not carried over between saves :p
2007-07-30, 6:40 AM #103
Saves? You mean you don't build levels in all-night, redbull-fueled, marathon sessions? :gbk:

Hey - how is the grand prize split up if there are more than one editors attached to a project (e.g. a team of two)? Is such a partnership allowed?

Don't know yet, we'll figure out something if that happens.

I read that, but how to coordinate something like that? What if people don't want to donate for that? I don't want to limit the contest to people who have put in some prize money. I'd rather have you guys focus on making awesome levels...
2007-07-30, 9:30 AM #108
And by "you guys" I mean me, too... *furiously starts cleaving & deleting"
2007-07-30, 9:38 AM #109
Who cares? Donating won't give anyone special rights, and it's definitely not a requirement for entering the contest. I PayPal you a few dollars and you use that to buy the prize, that's it.

We could have a minimum that needs to be reached, say $100, and if it isn't reached everyone gets their money back. At $5 each that would take 20 of us. Is that such an unrealistic figure?

how about you paypal me the money and I will use it to buy myself a prize
2007-07-30, 10:08 AM #111
I don't have a paypal account.

This makes me wish I still modded.

Oh well, too busy with writing my novel. Maybe I'll be lucky and finish something for once in my life, lawl.

I'd chip in $5 for this if it'll sweeten the pot. Depending on how much was raised, we might even be able to finance attractive runner-up prizes. :)

Massassi should have a donate feature anyway.
2007-07-30, 11:25 AM #116
I think that would be dangerous. T.E. would donate his life savings (perhaps with a dedication to Joncy) and then GoldG would beg for us to give it all to him.

Ironically, that was scrapped due to run-ins with the thing and visible adjoin limits, which have both now been overcome. :gbk:

Sector cleaving is overrated. :ninja:

BTW, how many sectors/brushes are in your guys' levels so far? I'm sitting at 34 sectors across 3 different layers, but I expect that to jump sharply today (day off :neckbeard: ). Remember that JK level 1 only has 461 sectors.

You know what feature I really wish Jed had? I wish it'd let you adjoin two surfaces that aren't the same, but are on the same plane. It should just cleave the surfaces automatically to make adjoining possible. Does anyone know of a plugin that does this?
