I just met the woman I want to marry
2004-07-25, 8:39 AM #81
The word chick doesn't "offend" me on a personal level. It just represents Pagewizard's assumptions that women are objects. I quoted someone saying that this mentality leads to genocide, etc. All I did was take a critical approach to Pagewizard's post and question the assumptions. It was a fun change of pace in my opinion. Some people didn't like it. Oh well. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

And to people saying I need a change in priorities, you have no idea. I do need a life outside of quoting my policy debate evidence on an online forum, but if I can only use it in high school debate rounds it seems to go to waste.

But to Det, I'd like to say that I'm familiar with the rules and I know I'm pretty close to personally attacking Pagewizard. Just so you know, I'll be more careful not to cross that line.

Thanks Darko, you're right.

Holy crap.

Pagewizard may be completely deluded, he hasn't openly broken the rules.

Stop it, Darko.

I seriously don't get this. Why do you think that you get to ignore the rules?

I heard a funny joke the other day about a bunch of fools who became near-anal about defending a set of rules for the forums of a Star Wars video game website and took it seriously to the point of retardation, but I forget how it goes. Darn.

Wow, that's the worst thing a woman's ever been called, I tell you what.

Seriously, Being offended about the word 'chicks' is just some foolish way for women to feel even more importent. It doesn't imply ANYTHING. NOTHING. Not a SINGLE thing. It's just a nickname, sort of like 'kid' or 'gal.' I mean, what if I got offended everytime a girl called me a dork? I mean, they use the term alot for men... why aren't we offended? Oh right, we couldn't give a rats *** .

Seriously. It's all in how you take the word. If you're going to think it's offensive, it will be. If you just accept it it's not offensive. Obviously it CAN be used as offensive, but it almost always isn't. It's nothing like the "n" word, or any other word in that genre, as it was never adapted as a derrogatory term.

Regardless, there exists a large percentage of the English-speaking female population that does not like being referred to as a "chick." I've yet to meet a girl who isn't at least slightly offended by being referred to as a chick.

Is someone actually gonna do something about it? I've seen people on these boards get banned immediately for posting what he has. Plus, that's twice he has defied an admin.

I don't think my wife so much finds the word "chicks" offensive, just, kinda sad. Like that small group of people still wandering society using late 80's/early 90's slang.

Wait a second. I just read two posts that basically said they didn't see why Maevie found the word "chick" offensive, ergo it isn't offensive and so they find nothing wrong with using it...

Wow. Just wow. Does that mean I can go off and insult you, and when you ask me to stop, I can tell you you're being overly sensitive and that makes it okay for me to insult you?

Well guys, I decided that I'll see how it goes, sit down and talk to her and see what we can do. Since she has family here, she'll be returning often to visit them. I also decided that I might stop posting on this thread so I don't screw up and get banned.

First of all, Thrawn, I'm happy for you man, best of luck.
Second, a lot has been said on this thread and I'm far too lazy to read it all, in fact I read very little.
Third:
Calling girls chicks isn't this huge derogitory thing you're making it out to be. I call women chicks all the time, and do you know why? I get it from my mothers side, she calls women chicks.
And you know what else? My girl freinds (as in, friends who are girls) also call women chicks (although I think they did get that from me)

I'm sorry about all of this. I've been caught up in getting ready for another year of high school debate. I get carried away sometimes. I don't think Pagewizard is going to cause international genocide and nuclear war, nor do I believe he intends to objectify women purposefully. I've just been studying an argument that's new to me referred to as a "kritik" and I've had my brain wrapped in it for the past few weeks.

I don't think "chick" is a good word. But it's not 2 AM any more so I'm not thinking as radically.

Take your hand and feel between your legs. You feel those things? Those are testicals. Those separate you from women. It doesn't matter if you don't find it derogatory, the term isn't directed towards you. Until those things in your hand recede back into your coelom and turn into ovaries, maybe -just maybe- you should at least respect the requests made by the women on the board who have made it clear that they find it offensive. At the very least to be polite.

Of course I don't think that literally, but seeing aas some people seem to be incapable of respecting someone's wishes just because it's what they want, I thought I'd go further.

I know that the word 'chicks' isn't as bad as calling someone a n***** or a f**, particularly as it's not even used as an insult. But Wolfy and Roach seem to be the only people here who get it. It doesn't matter if most girls don't care, feel free to say it to them. I don't like it, and I think that you should have the decency and respect not to use the word in front of me. And Kieran, you may know plenty of girls who use it and are fine with you using it, but to then assume that that makes it ok is really dangerous, if you meet a girl like me, you're just gonna piss her off.

Now, to the far more important point. Could somebody please deliver an english keyboard and a broadband connection to Savonlinna, Finland? This is driving me crazy...

As for long distance relationships, I always fooled myself with the thought that our bond was strong enough that while it lay dormant, either of us could pursue people as they wished so long as when we were reunited we'd be back together... which, if you read my thread, apparently doesn't work.

Sorry for relating this back to me in this manner. I hate it when others do it to me, but there is some lesson from experience involved, I suppose.

ok, my testicles arn't the issue here.
My point was that none of the WOMEN or GIRLS that I know have any problem with it, since they use the word chicks themselves, and trust me, they don't have testicles.
Also, just having testicles does not prevent me from understanding women, I happen to have more female friends then male.
As for respecting the requests of the women here, you will notice I haven't actually called anyone a chick the entire time I've been here, and I won't, because I do realise people here are offended by it.
However, I will still use it amongst my friends and family, and I still refuse to beleive it is the huge deal it's being made out to be here.
