I suppose I should post on this again since I created this mess of a debate well back on page 1. Ironically, it wasn't even my main argument against Pagewizard's post, just the one I ended up defending since he attacked it specifically.

Who cares if people are "offended" by the word chick? I would argue that's one of the problems we're seeing here. I don't expect people to see the word chick and say "that's bad." I expect people to say "who cares? It's just a word." That's because it's entrenched in society. The argument made by postmodern feminists would be that males dominate society so much that everyone on this thread thinks it's just a word. You don't think it's any different because you're so deep in your male dominated mindset. That's why people like the writer's of the article that Roach posted sometimes deconstruct language.

I don't really want to keep on this subject simply because I don't know it well enough myself. A lot of this philosophy is mind blowing. But it's certainly interesting. I'm not asking people stop saying "mankind" or start spelling women as "womyn". The least you can do is stop referring to females by using a common animal noun. Unless you always want the idea to be entrenched in our language.

Do I believe in it? I'm not sure, but it's damn interesting and fun to argue when the debate doesn't get down to "stop being politically correct." It's more fun to argue that by burying words we aren't changing the mindset but instead just pretending that our society isn't male dominated. That we instead need to keep the words to expose the horrors of our society. *shrug* Like I said, I'm in this too deep and I need to take a break.

Is this what you believe, or are you merely quoting it?

I will now destroy feminism right before your very eyes.

Feminism is a joke. There is no "glass ceiling". The reason why women are not in high exec positions is b/c they are relatively new additions to the workforce. They will get it when they pay their dues and
start from the bottom like everyone else. No one gets into an exec job right away, unless they happen to be a relative of the owner or something.

Another feminist argument that is easily explained away is the so-called wage gap. Feminists claim that women are paid less than men. That is only half true. It is illegal to pay women less than men for the same job (assuming the representative of both sexes have the exact same qualifications) However, women do earn less overall than men do, and there are reasons for this.

1. Men outnumber women in the workforce. Most men under typical retirement age have a job, and due to seniority, many men have moved up to the highest paying jobs. Not all women work; a signifigant portion works, but a signifigant portion is home with the kids, or sacrifice work time to take maternity leave.

Since the core arguments of feminism are so easily explained away, one must conclude that it was a sham movement. Most movements fade away once their purpose objective has been completed. Feminism is not about equal rights, its about giving themselves an excuse
to accept their weaknesses. Have you ever wondered why the stereotypical feminist is fat and ugly enough to make a dog puke? Feminists are not able to appreciate themselves as women, and they blame men for their problems, so they wage war on both sexes, but more visibly on masculinity. They claim that they are independent, but at the same time they want shortcuts and special perks to get what they think is rightfully theirs.

See how this works? This is why I mock feminism, and its product: political correctness.

The thing is it's not anyone's job to tell others not to dislike being called a certain word.

There are people on this forum who would get pretty annoyed at being referred to as a nerd, dork or geek for hanging out here, whilst others just don't give a toss and would laugh it off. No-one is right or wrong in feeling one way or the other about it.

You may not care Elana, but others obviously do and that is enough for me not to use the word. It's just common decency and I really don't see how it's any form of sacrifice.

Originally I was going to post a detailed response but then I remembered what Zully said and realized that you fail to meet your original claim to a ridiculous extent.

I can concede to you that women are getting jobs and getting paid correctly and you still fail to disprove feminism. You're discussing one specific feminist movement. Good job. You ignore the arguments I make about discourse proving the male oriented society.

But you also finish by lowering yourself to ad hominem attacks trying to discredit feminists by stereotyping them as not fit to be objects of your attraction. Good job on linking yourself back to my original arguments with more force than before.

Even if feminists achieved their objectives they wouldn't have to go away. The federalists got their federal government. That was the objective of the federalist papers. They didn't stop advocating a federal government. There will always be people on the other side with differing beliefs.

You also fail to prove that feminists seek perks. But I would argue that feminist philosophy I make brief references to (philosophy I can't claim to understand all the warrants of) doesn't seek perks or any of the material things you do.

You also fail to equate political correctness with the idea that we need to deconstruct language and question the underlying assumptions that we speak with every day. That's like saying Heidegger was a political correct Nazi.
