Can someone explain this cartoon to me? The political messages are so subtle I'm not sure what it's trying to say.

When it gets to that point, the smart ones will realize selling their time for money is stupid. Use your time more wisely, that's all there is to it. Be more independent. If you have to go without your precious xbox and heated home, you won't get sympathy from me. Be a man and stop crying. That's basically all Ron Paul is trying to accomplish, is to get this country from the blubbering, handout-dependent babies they are now to people who are independent, capable, and masculine.

/facepalm

Minimum wage is a retarded answer to nothing. This isn't about liberal/conservative. This is basic economics.

The answer to bad wages is organized labor, and we have that.
2008-02-01, 2:35 PM #63
Just becuase your mother pays for everything doesn't mean we shouldn't be increasing the minimum wage a business is required to pay.

Minimum wage should be a livable amount for a single adult. I don't care if it's mcdonalds. In and Out, a family owned franchise out west, pays $10.00 an hour. Mcdonalds, a much larger company, could do the same.

Unions have become incredibly ineffective, and there are many laws in place that prevent the formation of labor unions in the first place.

The problem is that there is no way for a union to enforce satisfactory work performance. You're in the union, and provided you have the seniority you can do whatever you'd like as long as you don't commit one of the 5 cardinal sins. Even then it's increbily easy across the board as a teamster to get your job back after being terminated, without so much as a wage cut. ****, if you fight it long enough they'll even make the company pay you for the time you missed.
2008-02-01, 3:20 PM #64
Unions are self-destructively overpowered as it is, but that's beside the point.

Raising the minimum wage helps very few people. People do not survive on minimum wage jobs. If you are able bodied, over twenty, and make minimum wage, you deserve what ever crap you get. Minimum wage jobs are for part time workers and teens. Bumping up that minimum bar will either a) cause the people who are being paid that wage to loose their jobs, or b) cause the prices of products that real life poor people have to buy to go up.

I will go find other people who share my opinion and agree with them in large, red letters. Once this makes me feel sufficiently better about my position, I will send an occasional insult in your direction which will not be quite creative enough to be relevant. This will force you to acknowledge that I was and am right about everything ever.

How so? The funny part about the Ron Paul supporters is that they're all hand-fed momma's boys. Why are all of the nerds that either have the ability to work a high paying job, or are still living at home off of their father's income supporting Ron Paul?

Freelancer, you know NOTHING about being poor, and the kind of things that keep people from making money. People as a whole don't have the ability to make enough money to pay for basic needs. Do you understand what it might be like for a single mother with a child working 3 jobs, only to see the price of gas go up because of governments lack of control on the gas companies? Ron Paul would see those gas companies get bigger, and would see those companies become one single company. How can that possibly help our economy.

Your problem is that you've had everything paid for your entire life. To get a well paying job in America, you have to go to a college that is going to cost you loans. Already you're paying 200 dollars a month once you're out of school. Hopefully there are jobs available, and you haven't been privatized/outsourced out of a position. OK, let's dodge all of that and get a job without going to school? Now we're making minimum wage, and trying to pay for transportation and funding.

Add a sudden accident or disability or child to this, and it's IMPOSSIBLE to get ground back. This isn't people being lazy, stupid, or incapable. It's people being unable to afford the high cost of living, or paying the ridiculous fee for a piece of paper that allows you to work in a wealthy field.

Unmonitored industry would further destroy our economy, and nothing about economics is going to disagree with that statement. Nowhere will you hear the phrase "Monopolies help everyone in a society." Monopolies go AGAINST the grain of a society, destroying it from the ground up.

We're going to look like a lot of African countries in a few years, if things keep going in this direction. Big government buildings full of delegates all handing money back and forth between eachother, killing dissenters, and using "Freedom" as a justification for everything.

What exactly is the cost of living, though? Living is free, and almost everything you can buy is unnecessary. People expect too much and they're unwilling to work for the things they want, they just expect their desires to come to be because it's "the cost of living."

That's assuming there is no rent to pay or property tax. Utility costs come in too, unless you consider running water as "unnecessary". Many people have medical costs and children need education.

But if living in a cardboard box is fine with you..

You must not have read my post. Gas, utilities, rent, and education alone cannot sustain a person. Combine this with an unexpected accident, and there's no way you're getting out of poverty.

These aren't necessities, they're basic standards of keeping a home. Without the above expenses, you cannot live in most places in the US. Some parts of the county would suffice with a bike.
