I love how freelancer seems to imply that a capitalist country cant also have some socialist systems in it as well.

Curious phenomenon.

When you ask someone to donate to something, some of them say no, but some of them open their purses.

When you tell someone they have to donate to something, they all say **** you.

Maybe because we don't like having people tell us what we have to do with our money. So many of you assume that because someone doesn't want socialized health care its because we must be heartless monsters who want to hoard all our money and could care less about the poor in our country. But guess what, your absolutely wrong (in most cases anyway, there really are some heartless people out there, regardless of political party). I donate to charity, I donate blood at the Red Cross, I volunteer time in humanitarian efforts. But I don't think its the governments business to tell me when I have to be charitable and take my money that I've worked hard to earn to do it.

Giving the option to keep the money or donate for a public education system, I doubt many people will care to help the school system. And there goes the schools?

You're a heartless *******.

the schools are going anyway.

in the last 4 years since i graduated high school, i've talked to many recent graduates/current high school students, and i bring up something they should have learned in middle school and they're all like "huh?"

perhaps the school system i was raised in was better than the one around here, or perhaps i'm just weird and like to learn things and these kids dont, but it is appalling to me how much these people dont know. and most of them seem to be reasonably intelligent.

frankly, i think that if we had a better education system americans would be healthier happier people.

I am awed by your superior debating skills and your ability to not only completely ignore all the charitable things I listed in my post that I do, but also your uncanny ability to make accurate judgment calls on my moral character based off a few posts on the internet.

Or maybe not.

You don't need it professor angry at internet.

I give as much as I can already. I wouldn't mind paying more taxes for universal healthcare. Unlike the rest of you I don't seem to be a universal douche.

I read your post. It more or less contradicted the idea of helping someone. I decided you were either A. A douche, or B. Making a false argument on internet.
2008-02-07, 9:14 PM #301
Ah, and yet again you revert to the argument that I must be heartless because I don't want universal health care. Really, tell me again. I'm not sure I quite understood you when you said it before and I responded. Because, honestly, I can't imagine how I could have been mistaken to think that donating to charities and volunteering time at humanitarian efforts as well as donating blood to the Red Cross could ever be thought to be helping people. Please, tell me again how horrible I am, someday I may understand how superior you are to me.

2008-02-07, 9:23 PM #305
Its OK Rob, I understand if it hurts your head too much to actually come up with real arguments, so you have to resort to insults and repeating over and over what you've already said.

Despite all this, even assuming I am the heartless person you claim I am, you've still not provided a good reason why I should be compelled to be charitable if I don't wish to be.
Life is beautiful.
2008-02-07, 9:29 PM #306
You don't even have an argument.

You don't believe in universal healthcare because you feel that you should only help your fellow man when you feel obligated to do so, and that is really ****ing sad for someone who obviously has more than enough money to afford basic needs health care to say. Guess what, not everyone was born into the life you are. Not everyone in a bad situation is there because they want to be or of their own fault.

You only exibit compassion for your fellow man when your conscience obligates you to.

Like I said, I hope life puts you in a situation where you would need universal health care. Lets see how much you care about getting the proper help you need then.

That is strictly assuming you don't give more than taxes for healthcare would take.

Except that Jesus was all about helping others before helping yourself. Jesus would vote for health care. >_>

Yes, I'm sure I'm obligated to do all the charitable things I do, and don't do it simply because I like helping people. You, of course, would know this...how again?

But thats ok, since I know your simply going to respond with more insults about how horrible a person I am, and not address the issue of why the government should be able to force me to be charitable (which, since it is apparently difficult for you to figure out, its what my argument is, that they should be able to), I think its ok for me to leave things as they are. I feel perfectly comfortable that, no, I'm not the horrible person that you say I am, and that yes, I do actually do things to help other people simply because I enjoy doing so and I like seeing the joy it brings to the people I help.

But thats ok, you Rob, obviously know me best, because your a much better person then I am and can tell what type of person I am from a few posts on the internet.

It's called flamebait and trolling.

The government isn't forcing you to be charitable, they're forcing you to be reasonable.

Too many people in this country can't afford the proper healthcare they need. Period. If you donate craploads to some cancer charity or something, great. But you're not everyone. This isn't about your comfort level, this is about people's lives. Wake up.

Hell, just look at my situation. I need hundreds of dollars worth of bandages and such a month, and ~$2000 goes to my compression stockings which keep me alive. However, insurance seems to think that since I had this condition beforehand that I'm not entitled to any money. So instead I am forced to pay this out of pocket. Let's not even get onto the issue of surgeries. Oh, and don't forget to factor in basic health checkups on top of that massive bill.

But yeah, sure, you're doing enough.

But Jesus also said you shouldn't expect anyone else to help you. It's advice for the helped, not the helper : Make an effort, and you'll find more help than you need. Sit there doing nothing... and you'll find nothing.

Personally, I'm inclined to help someone. But if I help them once, and learn they are just some lazy idiot who wants a handout, I'm rather disinclined to help them again. If I help them, and find out they are an honest guy who works hard and is just down on his luck, I'd be even more inclined to help them again.

See how that works?
Wikissassi sucks.

So your basic argument is that because these people can't afford it themselves, that somehow entitles them to my money because I have extra (which I don't, being a poor college student, but for the sake of argument lets say I do). I fail to see how this is somehow the reasonable position, while I'm obviously just someone who hates to help people and want to keep all my money for myself.

But yeah, yours is the reasonable position. People being poor just entitles them to other peoples money.

No, it entitles them to life.

You aren't buying them a goddamn house, you're making sure they'll be here next week. What you're trying to say is that your money is worth more than someone's life.

I don't care how much of a lifeless bum someone is. That is no excuse to let a man, or woman, or child die. No one deserves to lose their life until they attempt to take the life of others. Maybe I'm crazy in this way of thinking, but I sure as hell hope someone is with me on this.
2008-02-07, 10:35 PM #319
you people do realize that this money is only being spent when someone actualy uses the system? and that the amount of tax that goes toward funding socialized healthcare depends on how much people use it. Also, you do realize that if people go to the doctor because they have a cold, the treatment or even advice they get means that they do not get sicker and have to get treatment for complications that cost even more.
