Just hop in a quick respawn server. You might die a lot, but at least you'd be able to figure things out

Focus on one class at a time. To be honest, if there was a single player aspect it would be terrible and you would learn nothing. The classes' abilities aren't really complicated, it's more about learning the maps and how to counter what is coming at you.

That, and depending on your team and your class, you probably will die a lot. Just take a lot of people out along with you and you're doing fine. :hist101:

The easiest classes are probably the Pyro or Soldier, by the way. The pyro is fast and doesn't have any real special abilities to worry about. The soldier is stronger, and is a good way to introduce abilities like rocket jumping (which is required to learn if you want to be useful later on).
2009-05-21, 6:45 AM #163
You really can't go wrong with Pyro.

If you want to observe AND be useful, do Medic and hang around. Uber a spy once in awhile.

Could someone add me to the massassi group? My ID is Bobbobthebob.

I started playing regularly about 3 weeks ago. Just persevere a bit at the beginning and it'll soon become a lot of fun. Try to learn to identify what classes the team needs at the time and even when you're crap you'll at least be appreciated.
I think CMs right that the pyro and soldier are the easier classes to start with. My stats certainly seem to bear that out.
2009-05-21, 8:30 AM #165
I'd say soldier is the best class for noobs. With pyro, even though it's technically easy to use (hold down fire and flail), to be effective you need to know the maps inside and out.
2009-05-21, 8:34 AM #166
Exactly what I was going to say Ragna. Pyro is always touted as the noob class, but if a pyro really knows the map, he's a far more effective spy-type.

That said, the Pyro really does have the most options for range.

I don't agree that the Pyro was always considered a "noob class." Before the Pyro Update, it was pretty challenging to play correctly and actually make an impact. Heaven forbid you have to run away if outmatched.

Now, a bad player will be somewhat effective with the class while a good player will dominate.

I was just looking at the Spy Update page. The order form for the "Cloak and Dagger" and the "Dead Ringer' has both being ordered. Think he's getting both? (or at least the option to pick one or the other)

The first time I ever played, I used an engineer. Being unfamiliar with the maps caused me to build in horrible places, and having my teammates angry as hell. I then switched to heavy, which proved to be a little easier, but I wasn't too fond of the class.

After about an hour, I found the soldier to be the easiest for someone with my skill level.

Of course, this was months ago, when I still had access to TF2 :psyduck:

I mostly play pyro because I find most of the other classes to feel too slow and cumbersome.
nope.

I've spent about fifteen hours apiece on demoman and pyro.

Though I play whatever we generally don't have (excepting Spy, because I'll never be CREDIT TO TEAM) I gravitate to those two if we have multiples of everything.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Lately I've been doing backburner pyro and offensive engineer. Pyro is the only class that I'm kind of good at - I can typically get close to a 2:1 kdr now, which is kind of nice because I don't have mad BOOM HEADSHOT skills. As for engy, I just like seeing how many teleports I can rack up.

Spying is fun but it's easily the most frustrating class for me. One wayward shot and your whole plan is screwed up (and you're probably also dead).

You should try disguising yourself as another member of your own team, theres a good way to confuse the heck out of the enemy.

Or get shot quicker.

I've never seen that used for anything than during Setup time, usefully.

Disguising is only useful for closing the distance between your target and yourself. Most of your time should be spent cloaked, and if you're aware of the ammo around you you can maintain cloak for a LONG time.

People play TF2 seriously? I would have thought the amount of non-seriousnes slathered all over the game would stop tourney-idiots from crushing it under their elitist feet.
2009-05-21, 4:21 PM #178
The best part about TF2 is that even the biggest noob can contribute SOMETHING to a team. Can't aim well? Doesn't really matter. Aiming isn't always or really all that necessary. Can't sneak well? There's a class for that.

Do you not try and get a high score? Try and get your team to win? Try and die less and kill more? No? You just run around doing random stuff the entire game?

Personally I enjoy a game more win I'm trying to win at it, messing around is for stuff like GTA, even then it's usually after I've finished the main game, until then yeah it's kinda serious business. But playing the game to win doesn't mean elitist by a long shot.

But the steam page and the site haven't updated...
I am confused.
2009-05-21, 5:49 PM #186
Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Maps

  • Added new map, Pipeline. Pipeline is the first map in a new game mode named payload race, which uses two carts in each map instead of only one like traditional payload maps
  • Added new arena map Sawmill
  • Added new arena map Nucleus
  • Added new community payload map Hoodoo

Sniper Changes

  • Added new sniper rifle replacement, The Huntsman. Instead of a sniper rifle, you have a bow that allows you to move around faster while firing, and fire more quickly than the sniper rifle. Works better at medium range than the standard rifle
  • Added new SMG replacement, Jarate. If thrown on an enemy they will take more damage for short period of time. Also extinguishes flames on yourself or allies
  • Added new SMG replacement, The Razorback. Will protect you against a single spy backstab, and stun the spy for a short period of time. Comes with a 15% move speed penalty for the wearer
  • Standard sniper rifle now shoots through friendly players
  • Added 54 new Sniper voice lines
  • Added 35 new Sniper achievements

Spy

  • Added new revolver replacement, The Ambassador. First shot is very accurate and will cause a critical hit if it hits an enemy's head. Accuracy is poor for a period after that
  • Added new watch replacement, the Dead Ringer. When armed, you will appear in all ways to die to the first damage you take from an enemy. You'll be cloaked for 8 second after taking this damage. Upon de-cloaking you'll make a loud, distinct sound
Added new watch replacement, the Cloak and Dagger. Your cloak meter is only depleted when you move, so you can stay invisible indefinitely if you're standing still
  • Spy name tags now show up properly when disguised as their own team
  • Fixed a bug that would cause spectators to see disguise weapons incorrectly
  • Fixed a bug where enemy spies disguised as friendly spies would have cigarettes that didn't burn
  • Fixed a bug where overhealing disguised spies would show the wrong overhealing amount to the medic
  • Made it more obvious on first person view model when your motion cloak is out of juice and you are partially visible
  • Also made it more obvious on first person view model when you're bumped while cloaked
  • Improved the way your disguise weapon is determined to make it clearer and fix a couple of rare issues
  • Spies disguised as enemy spies now get a random mask to help complete the disguise, and their target id will be set appropriately
  • Spies disguised as medics now have an Ubercharge: line in their disguise target info
  • Spies outward facing "disguise health" now matches their disguise target when they first apply the disguise
  • Spies can now pick up health kits for their "disguise health", even when uninjured
  • Disguise UI doesn't show up in minimum UI mode (hud_minmode)
  • Spies that disguise as a player using an unlockable now show that unlockable in hand
  • Spies can now use enemy teleporters
  • Added 70 new Spy voice lines
  • Added 34 new Spy achievements

Scoreboard changes

  • Dominations no longer get wiped when teams switch sides
  • Dead players draw slightly darker in scoreboard
  • Converted class labels to class icons
  • All players now display the total number of people they are dominating

General

  • Fixed a bug that would cause the scout's ball to regenerate at inappropriate times
  • Demomen can now detonate their stickies while taunting
  • Flamethrower's air burst now extinguishes fire on friendly targets
  • Grenades and rockets deflected by a pyro under the effects of Kritzkrieg will now be criticals
  • The Heavy and Sniper now have new custom death animations
  • Fixed payload HUD not updating properly if you join in the middle of a match and the cart isn't moving
  • Engineer's dispensers now give 20%, 30%, or 40% of player's max_ammo (for each ammo type) on each use, based on the level of the dispenser
  • Added -sillygibs commandline parameter which will allow the non-violent gibs to be enabled
  • Added a new taunt for the Kritzkrieg, which also heals for 10 points
  • Improved the deathcam camera handling used when a player plays a custom death animation

I pretty much disguise as teammate whenever I'm not behind enemy lines and I'm not cloaked, el oh el. Since it's like one button press and I'd rather not appear as spy.

The new update sorta changes things, too. C+D pretty much lets you cloak forever if you find good camp spots and Dead Ringer MAY (read: is speculated to) display friendly corpses rather than a spy corpse if you're disguised as a friendly...which would add a layer of usefulness to the friendly disguises.

Edit: Dude the spy buffs are pretty crazy. They pretty much fixed all of the 'holes' in disguises. Yay.

Just spent a couple of hours with the game. Arena mode is pretty newbie friendly as it's not nearly as hectic as my previous experiences with the game were. Was playing mostly as medic, was kind of fun.

How?

If you turn into one of your own team, its just as obvious it was a spy. If you stay as one of the enemy its going to be just as obvious because that would mean you killed someone with friendly fire.

:suicide:
nope.
2009-05-22, 4:56 AM #190
Boco - what he's trying to say is you get a like for like pretend corpse. Whatever you were disguised as (friendly or otherwise) is what gets put on the floor while you CHEESE IT.

(So if you were disguised as a medic on your side the other team don't realise they've really killed the spy)
2009-05-22, 5:12 AM #191
Aye I got that, but most spies never disguise themselves as one of their own.
nope.
2009-05-22, 5:36 AM #192
I'm trying to force my mate to give me back my Orange Box - seeing as how I own the game, is it worth investing a bit of time in on the 360? I've never played it once.
2009-05-22, 5:38 AM #193
The spy corpse cloak device is, in my opinion, the most goddamn useless thing ever invented.

So what if you appear to die after being hit once? What happens when you get hit again? Or if you're on fire? All of these things are HIGHLY likely. Take for example you get hit by a stray round of heavy fire, and it activates. You're now cloaked, but the heavy hits you again. NOW what? Another corpse? Do you blink? Either way, you're right back where you started.
2009-05-22, 5:42 AM #194
Use the sniper-covered routes? Dunno.

Seriously - if Dave returns my Orange Box tonight, can I just fire up Live and learn to play on the 360? Is it any good?

(Yes, I prefer mouse and keyboard, but no I don't have a PC up to it)
2009-05-22, 5:45 AM #195
You could learn a little bit of the basics on the 360, but TF2 on the 360 is TERRIBLE. There's massive amounts of bugs, none of the updates are there, and the hosts are typically terrible. Oh, and games are rarely full (16 player max, versus 32 player max on PC).
2009-05-22, 5:55 AM #196
Meh, I'll stick to re-playing Portal and forcing myself to finish HL2 then.

I always disguise as a friendly until I get behind enemy lines .)

A lot of other people do too

What I was trying to say that if you get hit while you're disguised as a friendly they see the corpse of whoever you disguised as (which means if you were a pyro for instance they'd be happy about killing the 'pyro' that just ran out in front of them), but if you get hit while disguised as an enemy or not disguised they see your spy corpse. But I guess that isn't going to happen.

Edit: Wait no it is! Woot

Quote:
Then, the next damage you take will drop a copy of your corpse (or disguised corpse, such as friendly pyro, if you were disguised as a friendly pyro). This includes fall damage. If a player shot you to trigger the dead ringer, a notification will display on their screen to make it look like they really killed you (you know the one- upper right hand corner, so and so killed so and so with a revolver or whatever). From there, you get 8 seconds of cloak. If you cancel cloak before it runs out, the remaining time will go back into the dead ringer rearming time (how long before you can use it again).

The dead ringer rearming timer is the normal cloak bar. You can only use the dead ringer when the bar is full.

Typical strategies, from what I've seen so far, are approach the front lines as a friendly, and get an enemy to attack you. From there, go behind enemy lines and wreak havoc. Try to keep the dead ringer up at all possible times, since you have no typical cloak. Then there's misdirection, where you basically spam short bursts of dead ringer, which is a dangerous yet effective technique at creating certain illusions and infiltrating rather difficult areas.
This is pretty much exactly how I envisioned it haha.

Also Matty: it puts out any initial fire I think (i.e. any fire that the Pyro is hitting you with at the first moment of contact is extinguished) so as long as you don't come back into range of the Pyro you're fine.

Edit: dude, spy update ****ing baller.

Also: Dead Ringer has no flicker when cloaked!

And you have damage resistance when you have a ragdoll prepped.

And you can use it to extinguish fire actively (on fire? cloak for half a second and it's gone!)
