The point is even a person with a CCW wasn't allowed to carry a gun at that mall!

I'm not reading that propaganda.

Also, no, it didn't stop the shooter. But look at it this way, if everyone had guns, maybe MORE people could have been killed by stray bullets!

Well the fact that it's presented on the NRA website would give it inherent bias, perhaps a direct link to the article that the snippet is from?

Gary Wroblewski, who uses a wheelchair, was by himself in his Marion County, Fla. home, when he heard a knock at the door. The man at the door claimed to be having car trouble and asked for assistance. Wroblewski sensed something wrong and retrieved his .45 caliber pistol before opening the door. As he opened the door, Wroblewski was rushed by a second man who had been hiding in some nearby bushes. As Wroblewski fell from his wheelchair he fired three shots at the intruders, killing one and causing the other to flee. Police have called the case an act of self defense and have tracked down the suspect who fled the scene.

A robber armed with a handgun entered a Chevron gas station in Cocoa, Fla. and demanded money from Sowann Suy, the store manager. Suy retrieved a gun from behind the counter and fired at the criminal, striking him in the abdomen and causing him to flee. The robber did not make it far, collapsing in the parking lot of the gas station. The criminal was then taken by helicopter to a local hospital and is expected to survive. Cocoa Police Officer Barbara Matthews was supportive of Suy’s actions, stating, “He absolutely had the right to defend himself.”

After someone stole lawn care equipment out of Shane Biel’s trailer, the Lake County, Fla. resident installed an alarm. A few weeks later, Brett Lee Canada attempted to break into Biel’s trailer. Upon hearing the alarm, Biel retrieved his shotgun and went to investigate. When Biel came upon Canada, the criminal lunged at him. Biel fired at Canada three times, killing him. This was not Canada’s first burglary; he had been arrested in March for a similar crime. After an investigation, the police chose not to press charges against Biel, citing the Florida Castle Doctrine. Biel’s neighbors were also supportive of his actions, with one stating, “That’s what we move to America for. To protect our stuff.”

An intoxicated criminal attempted to break into the home of 91-year-old Robert Thompson in Lake Worth, Fla. Upon hearing the attempted break-in, Thompson and his dog Rett went to investigate. The pair made their way to the porch, where Rett subdued the burglar. Thompson then raced back inside to call the police and retrieve his gun. As Thompson came back to the porch the burglar got free from Rett and came towards him. Thompson fired a shot, which did not strike the criminal, and then held the intruder until police arrived. This was not Robert Thompson’s first time dealing with a dangerous aggressor; he is a World War II veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart.

Two men entered the Gloco Grocery and Soul Food Deli owned by Willie Byrd in Melbourne, Fla. The pair ordered food, and as a ploy asked Byrd for change for a $50 bill. One of the men then drew a handgun, as the other grabbed for the cash in Byrd’s register. Byrd retrieved his .357-caliber handgun and fired at the criminals, causing them to flee. When police arrived they found one of the robbers in the parking lot of the store, wounded and still clutching the stolen money. Byrd will not face any charges according to Cmdr. Ron Bell of the Melbourne Police, who stated, “He was well within his rights.” The criminals were lucky to have fled when they did; Byrd’s daughter works at a nearby salon and after hearing the shots, she retrieved her own gun and headed to the scene.

69-year-old Peter Gilmore and his 25-year-old son James McGlone were at home in Port Charlotte, Fla. when a pair of masked robbers, armed with a tire iron and knife, kicked in their front door. One of the masked men threatened Gilmore with his knife, causing McGlone to rush to his father’s room to retrieve a gun. McGlone was chased by the tire-iron wielding criminal, who struck him over the head with it. Despite the hit, McGlone retrieved a handgun and fired it at his attacker, striking him in the stomach, which caused him and knife-wielding accomplice to flee. A short time later, police received a report of a man with a gun shot wound seeking medical attention at a home in a nearby neighborhood. The unwounded criminal has been taken into custody and police plan to do the same with his accomplice once he is released from the hospital.

Both Anthony and Peter retrieved their firearms and went to investigate. As Anthony went into the house through the garage, he saw two intruders, one of whom had a gun in his hand and was pointing it at him. Anthony dropped to one knee and he and Peter opened fire, killing one intruder and wounding the other. The next night neighbors came to the Julien household to show their support for the brothers. The well-wishers included a woman whose home had been robbed as well.

Linking to a webpage hosted by an organization that handpicks articles which suit its agenda hardly makes you right.

Guess what you'll find on a blog that is run by liberals: Anti republican/pro liberal material.
Guess what you'll find on a blog that is run by pro-gun activists: Pro gun material.

They're legitimate news articles illustrating lawful defensive uses of firearms. You are so blinded by your own bias that you are apparently incapable of even considering the possibility that someone else might be right.

Do you have anything of substance to contribute to this discussion? Go find a source that links to all the news articles where people legally carrying CCW committed hundreds of violent crimes. If you can't do that, maybe it's time for you to shut up and move on.

And stop posting about John Lott's book. Studies have shown no data that backs up anything he claims about ccw permits reducing crime.

Furthermore, I am not biased at all. I own several guns and have nothing against the right to own guns or anything remotely close to that. I just don't think civilians should carry guns in public. I think it's irresponsible, and dangerous.

JLee, just find a different source or link to the articles directly, it gives them far more credibility then being from a biased source.
2010-01-26, 12:57 AM #175
Tibby, I went through and bolded every source right there. I don't care enough to go look them up independently.

It's obvious that Antony will not change his mind, and I have better things to do than to argue with a robot.

You have a good point, I guess then that it would be up to Antony to check the sources himself.
2010-01-26, 1:19 AM #177
That's the great thing, though. I don't have to check his sources, because my argument is based on logic as opposed to handpicked cases which support my beliefs. Guns are specifically designed to end life. Increasing the number of guns in a public place increases the odds that life will end in that public place.

2010-01-26, 1:22 AM #178
I'm going to try and play devils advocate here- Isn't it also equally as likely that those same guns could save lives? If everyone knows everyone else can kill them would anyone try anything? Sort of a MAD theory.

I'm interested in this issue, although having no real opinion of my own due to my low level of knowledge. However I would love to be able to formulate a knowledgeable opinion.
2010-01-26, 1:26 AM #179
You could also say that elimination of all guns would save lives, but that's a ridiculous scenario.

2010-01-26, 1:27 AM #180
More devil's advocacy: the sources may have been bolded, but the stories have obviously been edited into a "summed up" form by the American Rifleman. Not that I'm accusing them of changing the facts, but it's easy to slightly alter the tone of a story.

Aaaaanyway, back to work <.<

How many shootings happen in gun stores or gun shows? According to your logic, the vast majority of them should happen there due to the heavy concentration of guns.

How many fires happen in the aisle where they keep matches in a grocery store? Does the checkout line where the lighters are frequently catch fire?

By that logic, considering gun ownership has increased by quite a bit over the last years, as well as the number of people holding CCW permits, we should have seen dramatic increases in the number of gun-related deaths. Except we haven't, they have actually declined. As well as the rate of violent crime. If increasing the number of guns is increasing our odds of dieing, the entire country is sure doing a good job of defying those odds.
Life is beautiful.
2010-01-26, 3:06 PM #186
Antony you're starting to sound quite shrill in comparison to JLee :/

He's providing evidence to support his points. Your refutations of these sources are either nonexistent or rather weak. You aren't posting any sources of your own, instead saying things like:

Originally posted by Antony:

While posted evidence reflects the opposite, as Roger mentioned.

I'm not saying that I necessarily believe JLee's points straight up, but is providing some, along with evidence.

2010-01-26, 3:47 PM #189
Well, then why even bother?
I don't come in here and debate something I don't know anything about, also you're using a fallacy tactic that even SF_Gold used to use. "I don't care thus somehow I'm right" Not caring enough about something to form a valid opinion based on fact and reason, yet still arguing about it, is a form of ignorance.
2010-01-26, 3:53 PM #190
Is that right?

There's a difference between not caring enough to debate something and not having a valid, knowledgeable opinion. I don't particularly have the time to research this topic considering I have better things to do now, unlike last night. And counterpointing gun-toting knuckle draggers is fun.

Counterpointing someone's argument is hardly trolling, Steven.

2010-01-26, 3:55 PM #191
That's true. If you had actually counterpointed any argument, that would have been a good response. Instead, you tossed out your own conjecture and pontifications.
2010-01-26, 3:57 PM #192
Yes but the fact that you chose to argue an opinion that wasn't based on facts, or reason because you didn't care enough to do the research.
I don't go into a quantum mechanics debate and say string theory is bull****, I don't care about string theory enough to research it.
The entire point of an argument is to enhance both parties knowledge of an issue and to come to a valid conclusion, this doesn't work when one party "Doesn't care" and refuses to alter their point based on evidence.

Steven, if you're going to insist on being so pretentious - and I mean that with full knowledge of the dictionary definition and precisely how it applies to you - the least you could do is train yourself to recognize the logical fallacies in your own statement before attempting to accuse others of doing it.

Otherwise you end up looking stupid. Case in point:
