I think he is saying that we all should have really low expectations for you, so when you do something that isn't terrible, that's pretty much all we can hope for.
By the way, Wookie, I have to disagree, I don't really consider anything Jon'C does to be anything you could describe as "indoctrination". That sort of requires hard authority and statements of fact that deny all other possibilities. Jon'C has soft authority, which is to say that his authority is derived from knowledge and esteem of the community, rather than, say, violence, economic force, and jail. Also, he may make statements of fact, but he rarely denies all other possibilities, he just usually evaluates and dismisses them. Do we all disagree at times, yes, and definitely he's like a mule when it comes to changing his mind, but it's not like he doesn't think about other possibilities.
And in the spirit of the thread, I think he is part a secret government program that monitors the intelligence, knowledge, and views of the population. Operatives are placed in every community to lead on debates and push and pull ideas to find out what and how each member of the community thinks, and this information is reported and collated into regional and demographical reports which are evaluated by TOP men.
Jon'C did something that made one of his superiors develop a grudge against him, perhaps he slept with his wife or corrected him in a meeting. For this reason he was reassigned to the worst group an agent can be a part of: the internet communities division. Not only that but his reassignment came with a special note attached which indicated that he should be placed with the smallest and least influential community that the division actually monitored, and therefore he was placed with us. This career-destroying assignment is why he acts the way he does, and why he never leaves.
ALSO if anyone wants to help me write a thriller about this Jon'C I am totally into that, I think it could be pretty good. You're welcome for the idea.
