The Passion of the Christ

I was tempted to see Passion, but then I saw it was all in another language with subtitles. I can't stand that.

*sigh* I am out of the loop on so many things these days. I figured as much from your previous post. Its just kind of funny seeing the evidence bit, especially given the path most RD threads followed. I had flashbacks to some very looooong drawn out discussions.

Ok, just saw it. It's a good movie. But Mel Gibson is hardly the best director ever and it's hardly the best movie ever, though it may be the best film of the year, of course, we're 2 months in...

Anyways, I'm going to say what I liked and didnt like about the movie:

***SPOILERS*** (...not anything to do with the plot cause that's pretty obvious...)

DISLIKES:
  • Any scene with Satan... just stupid, whoever played Satan did a good job, just the incorporation of him into the movie wasnt handled correctly, and the shot of him at the end of the movie in Hell was just laughable.
  • The last scene with the grave-clothes/Jesus' hand. Bad cinematography and didnt really add much but a little "HOORAY FOR CHRISTIANITY" moment. It almost seemed like Mel added it to avoid criticism.
  • You had a hard time figuring out who people were if you werent a Bible thumper.
  • The Temple Guards' armor, not really a thing against the movie, but they looked retarded.

    LIKES:
  • Any scene with Judas. His character and Mel's depiction of him was excellent. I was probably moved almost as much by his character than by the entire rest of the movie.
  • Costumes and set. All top notch.
  • Scenes with violence and gore were done 'tastefully' and really werent that disgusting, just sad.
  • Any scene with Pontius Pilate.
  • The whole language/subtitle thing.
  • The actor who did Jesus, dont know his name but he was in the Count of Monte Christo...

So yep. I'd give this movie a 7/10 and it'd be probably around a 9/10 if it werent for those stupid Satan-scenes.

The only thing is, if you Christians use this movie to try to convert your friends/family, it's sad. While good, it wasnt terribly moving and emotional if you arent a Christian.

Ya... that's how bad they were. They almost ruined the movie for me. Like the first satan scene was ok, but then there's a few more and they get dumber as it goes on.

To start with, I have never cried during a movie until this one. Regardless of your religous beliefs or lack therof, it's one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen. Just taking it from a historical context, the movie is powerful. Go see it, it's worth it.

Cazor, I totally understand when Satan tempts Jesus in Gesthemane, it's just every other time he showed up I wish it would've been more tasteful, the weird Midget thing and the scream at the end took a lot of the impact out of the story for me.

I didn't think the Satan scenes were THAT bad, but one or two of them were questionable in terms of their relevance to the rest of the movie. I just assume that there was a deeper meaning or interpretation of Mel in them that I didn't pick up.

The movie has some things that are not in the bible, but most of them are there purely for effect, to give the audience a feeling for Mel Gibson's interpretation of what is happening, or what could be happening.

Judas hallucinates because he betrayed the son of God. A curse perhaps. That COULD HAVE HAPPENED, it's very probable and likely, but it's not in the bible.

Also, my BIGGEST PROBLEM with the movie was this:
Jesus fell down sooooo many times when he was carrying the cross. I mean I got the feeling and effect emotionally, I got Mel's vision and interpretation of what was going on in people's heads and what the mood was probably like while it happened, but still.

*falls*
wow, that's dramatic

The falling a lot isn't limited to just thie movie. There are a lot of pieces of art that have Jesus falling and being whipped quite a bit while carrying the cross. It's supposed to show his suffering and pain, but also determination and willingness to give his life (getting up, despite knowing that doing so will lead to his death) through the process.

Let me start off by saying that I'm not even remotely religious. With that said, this movie really wasn't that horribly impressive to me.

The Pros:
-Ridiculous amounts of violence (this coming from someone who was raised on a steady diet of disembowlment and people getting shot in the face)
-My friend bought my ticket, but I bought his popcorn. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]
-Number of people who loathe Mel Gibson is now somewhat increased.
-Some woman went to a theatre in the Bronx and nearly died of a heart attack.

The Cons:
-Mel Gibson is bound to win awards for provocative trash like this, meaning I'll have to sit through more of his aussie trash in some medium (TV, newspaper, etc.).
-Pontius Pilate was a corrupt son-of-a-*****.
-Some kid actually kicked me in the back of the head. A little kid. I mean he was like 2 feet tall, and somehow his leg stretched 4 feet to touch the back of my head. I hit him, his mother gets pissed, I have to movie. DON'T BRING YOUR IDIOT TODDLERS TO HORRIBLY VIOLENT JESUS MOVIES, YOU IDIOT SOCCER-MOM.

gearing up to see this flick tomorrow.

I get a kick out of the people who still do not "get it" in terms of the movie perspective, but I will save my reservations for after I see the film this Saturday.

One thing to note - in that link where they had people rating the movie, one guy said it was "mostly women". Obviously he was looking for an excuse. It was more women than men, but only by less than 10% in most categories, which is fairly close. Also, given that there are more women in the U.S. than men, it really gives a good cross-section of the population, although hardly scientific.

What I found interesting is that of the reviews that said the movie was bad, it was mostly 18-30 yr old men. I blame machoism for it.

Actually, that's probably the way it was. The Bible says something to the effect that he was beaten *beyond* recognition, and I seem to recall something about "the flesh torn from his back" (describing the whipping).

I've been noticing an interesting trend among major Hollywood actors. Tom Cruise and John Travolta are members of the Church of Scientology, Mel Gibson's a christian fundamentalist (as it were)... what's next? Harrison Ford delcares himself a member of the Kaballah and attempts to hurl the little asian kid from Temple of Doom off of the 5 sephiroth?
