Yes. The story is complete hogwash. The guy just put "rootkit" in his article so it would appear on Google.

Played the demo, and now I'm waiting for my game to arrive.

Now the "Beyond the Sea" song makes me think of Bioshock. Probably gonna take a while for me to forget.

It also takes a $3000 PC to run it at the highest settings.

I hart this gaem!!!!! ZOMG

Honestly I've been playing constantly on the Xbox360 for the better part of yesterday on a nice big HDTV. Wow. The atmosphere is amazing. The combat is getting mildly annoying however in the later half of the game, as the enemies simply get stronger and earlier tactics of killing them, like zapping them and smacking them, don't work anymore. .(

That's why you zap 'em to slow them down and then shoot them in the face.

Alternatively, zap 'em, move behind them, and smack them in the back with the wrench. I do believe the that's almost always a one hit kill. Freezing them works fairly well, as does setting them on fire.

Hmm, I tried the Bioshock Demo on a friends computer and bought the game...
I'm expecting it tomorrow, so I decided to download the demo again yesterday for fun.

But my comp shows: "Bioshock.exe has stopped working."

I googled this and found out there was a huge discussion about it at the 2kgame forums, but I couldn't really find a right answer.

I've discussed this with Sarn, and it could possibly be the video card.

Anyways, my specs are (dxdiag log):

It's wise to do it with every enemy. The camera lets you know when you don't need to take a picture. Sneak around, it's easier. And besides, when they charge you, bring up your weapon menu (is that even in the PC version?) it'll pause the game, select your gun, blow them away.

Alternatively you have the "static shock when attacked" tonic active, and it'll do the dirty work for you so you don't even HAVE to switch weapons.

This is so stupid. The chances of Bioshock actually KILLING his computer are minimal. It's a coincidence. This happens any time a major title comes out and someone's computer dies.

Oh wow, I did not see that coming. I just finished the Rapture Central Control area, with Andrew Ryan and all that. Wooow, I feel horrible, I've been harvesting all the Little Sisters so far in the game just to get more ADAM. They did an amazing job with the story in this game. :gonk:

I just passed that part a few minutes ago. I haven't had a lot of time to play because of work and classes...

I think "holy ****" coupled with "oh my god" is about the only thing that accurately describes how that went down with me. I'd read pieces of spoilers about it, but I totally wasn't expecting it to be ANYTHING remotely close to THAT.

... That was just brutal... and oh so wonderfully done.

why would anyone kill the little sisters when the woman explicitly says she'll make it worth your while? i've been saving them all game.

also, what zell said should probably be in spoiler tags.

Rant/half-*** review warning (all in spoiler tags just to be safe):

Terrific plot twist, but I found the endings to be pretty weak (the 'good' ending was pretty cheesy). The final boss battle was incredibly easy (medium difficulty) and the preceding objective of "protect the girl" was a real drag to me, and now that I think about it, it was kinda pointless. Why even put that in there?

The rest of the game was great fun though. I thoroughly enjoyed beating the crap out of splicers with a beefed-up wrench, and inciting violent battles between turrets, bots, splicers and big daddies. So much entertainment to be had just pissing all the NPCs off.

The graphics and physics are an absolute treat (though I did notice some pretty inexcusably ugly 'broken glass' effects from shattered windows, like when you see the big daddy throw that guy through the glass at you). I loved the sweet water effects from beginning to end. And I really enjoyed the fact that you can backtrack and go where ever you want, and see splicers still wandering around.

One thing that bugged me - I found the chemical thrower incredibly underwhelming, as you have been shocking, freezing and setting things on fire long before it ever comes into play, and it's basically just more of the same. I was hoping for something that was at least different from your plasmid powers (something like the Biorifle from Unreal perhaps?).

And the plasmids themselves ... really weren't so special. I don't know, I guess I was expecting some really far-out there, exotic ideas for powers - for them to be more biological than elemental. The hornet plasmid was on the right track (though could that have been any less useful?).

Alas, I suppose there's only so much you can do, though it would have been fun to learn how to climb around the walls like spider splicers, or to teleport like the Houdinis.

So all in all, a great FPS, but definitely NOT the revolutionary title that everybody expected/wanted it to be.

(though could [the bees] have been any less useful?).

I used them almost exclusively to beat Fontaine.

In an interview, the designer said that while art was important to him, he still wanted to make a title that would appeal (read: pander) to a mainstream audience, hence anything particularly avant garde/genre-redefining would not easily make the cut.

Whenever I tried to use that plasmid, enemies would just shake it off and incur minimal damage. In comparison to more direct methods of killing such as shotgun-to-the-face, it was like trying to kill things by loving them to death.

I used the crossbow, grenades and occasionally anti-personnel ammo to beat Fontaine. I had a tougher time taking down big daddies at the start of the game.

He was easy for me on Hard difficulty, too; I was never even in danger of dying.

While that might be lame for the player "out-of-the-game", I guess it sort of makes sense in-game, as you've become powerful enough to match even Fontaine who's filled with ADAM. Also, you're wearing Big Daddy armor, which soaks up 25% of damage.

They're incredibly useful for Big Daddies because they'll continue to irritate him and distract him while you blow the crap out of him.
2007-08-28, 7:44 AM #150
i took down a big daddy with 5 trap bolts. set up 4 of them in a hallway and used the 5th one to shoot him. the electrified trip wires did the rest as he rushed me.

Yeah, trap bolts are the only cost-effective way to kill a Big Daddy.

I also like to use Electric Gel on Big Daddies. They're paralyzed while you use it and their health drains down pretty quickly.

There's so many proxy mines and frag grenades throughout the game, I never had an issue taking them down.

Also, the incindiery bolts are way too overpowered, with the electro bolt plasmid and the upgraded crossbow, you can take pretty much any enemy down in one shot and not lose any any ammo.

whaaaat? Nah. The Elite Daddies you see later on? I've been kicking their *** by hitting them with my fire plasmid two or three times, then emptying four electrified shotgun shells into them. Done right they're down before they get close enough to hit you.

Though my shotgun being completely tricked out now might have something to do with that as well.

I realize you can recover most or all of your spent ammo your way, but really... you're generally walking around loaded with cash and ammo (at least I am) 80% of the time. Anything lost is recovered reasonably soon.

i usually emptied my grenade launcher first on big daddies then go shotgun or tommy gun. if you can set up before-hand you can use trap bolts very effectively though.

Look in the corners more often, because like... seriously... there's tons of crap just laying around.

And search every body, every container, every safe. Get the upgrade that lets you search things a second time. That way when you hit an empty container, you can search again, and occasionally find at least something. Pick up everything you find. There's really no reason not to. Other than that... you really just have to explore every area in every level.

I've actually RARELY used the grenade launcher, unless it was to lay proximity mines in front of a door Splicers were about to break down.

I think the only thing I was kinda let down by, is that I expected the Big Daddies to be MUCH more of a pain in the *** to take out. Like... it was going to be a risk, but there'd be a lovely pay off if you succeeded. But they aren't that hard to take down unless you're foolish and try to use the wrench, and they really don't smack you around too badly.

Of course, I'm playing on Easy, because I start EVERY game on Easy. Does that change significantly with higher difficulty?

Yeah, BDs will usually do some damage to you if you try to fight them straight-up on medium. I didn't find that Incinerate was too useful against them, and while the electric buck is pretty good, even that took me several rounds. Besides, trap bolts are a lot cheaper than electric buck... you can find the components lying around to invent as many of them as you could ever need.

Of course, my second time through I was generally full on cash, Eve, health and most types of ammo throughout the second half of the game. Once you learn to manage your ammunition properly, the game gets a lot easier. I'll have to play on Hard next time.

It wasn't so much that it caused damage as it was that it seemed to make them pause for a second or two. More so than the lightening bolts, which seem to wear off as soon as you shoot them.

I dunno. Even at this late stage in the game, I'm still looking for the best way to take them down that doesn't involve huge amounts of planning (laying trip wires).

Oh, having the security system attack them was just awesome fun. Hit 'em with that plasmid and then just stand back and watch.
