Good to hear I won't be too lost with the plot. I tend to hear a lot of bad things about Steam. If I purchase the retail version, I won't really have to mess with it right?
2007-10-08, 5:29 PM #44
I think you will, but I've never had any problems with Steam sooo....

Steam is great. Get over it.
2007-10-08, 8:37 PM #47
steam is nice.
I hesitate to call it great, but will say that it is good.
I think enough people have had trouble with it to keep it from moving up to great.

Here's some noteworthy stuff about Steam FYI:

  • Every Valve release from now until the end of time is going to need Steam. It's their copy protection. And I find it better than most. Plus it's got the awesome multiplayer and community features, and don't forget the automatic patching.
  • At the "end of time" which I shall define as Valve offices sinking into a newly formed volcano or some other disaster causing Steam to go out, Valve employees have already stated publically they'd provide Steam bypass tools for their Steam games. This was before they started picking up other third-party games for Steam, so I doubt it would apply to them. Either way, the pir8 community can come to your rescue too.
  • Steam runs great under Wine. TF2 runs great under Wine. I need to try other games. Only place Steam won't run is off an NTFS/NTFS-3g partition on Wine. Install it on your Linux partition and symlink the SteamApps directory back to your NTFS partition and you can share game files.
  • The only problem you're likely to have with Steam is that you need to be connected to the internet to play. Offline mode only works once you've logged in online at least once... and in the past I've found it to be sketchy (but I have internet all the time now so I dunno about now) so I'd test it once if I were you before taking a laptop on a trip or something.
  • Remaining problems are minor and likely to be resolved by restarting Steam. Problems that cause Steam not to start can sometimes be solved by deleting ClientRegistry.blob. Note that this requires you to sign on online as it forgets your ID and password and what games you own, plus it has to log on to download some stuff back into a new client registry. Also if you delete that file all games revert to "don't patch me automatically" mode... you can set each one back by right clicking it and selecting the resume menu option, or switching it in the game's properties.
  • Starting now, if you buy a duplicate game that you already have in Steam (like, as part of a package, notably Orange Box) you'll be able to give that game to someone else who has a Steam account (Orange Box owners get this on Wednesday). A similar but older feature is guest passes... occasionally Valve or another company will give you a guest pass for one of their games you own. You can then give this to someone to allow them temporary access to that game for free, so they can play with you (or not).
  • Valve switched from a nice Steam skin to an ugly minimalistic one. I don't know why. Anyone have a skin that switches Steam back perchance? (you know, the rounded corners and thick borders, I think it was premiered during the Steam 3 Beta)
  • You can't run Steam games unless Steam is running. The only exceptions are a couple of early third party games (Darwinia Demo and Defcon Demo are two, maybe it's just cause they're demos). Trying to run a Steam game directly will result in it starting up Steam and launching itself through Steam.
  • If you get crashes or spontaneous closings in third party games, try turning off the game overlay in settings. I had problems with Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Quake 3 Team Arena in the beta... they might have been fixed though. Works fine with Bioshock... the overlay is pretty cool actually.

Wednesday is almost here... Portal time is almost here....

It's funny how Portal is completely installed but they won't let you play it until wednesday. :(

P.S. I am very disappointed by TF2. There must be a lot of bugs left in it because the performance is awful compared to how bad it looks.

On the other hand, HL2:Episode 1 is really great. I am enjoying it very much and episode 2 will be nice to look forward to after I beat episode 1 and digest portal.

Jim wins the thread.

Anyway, aside from the fact that the online version of the Orange box letting you play TF2 now... are there any amazing features included with the online version that arent in the retail version? I was thinking about just going out and picking it up when it arrives in stores...

Why? It's much easier to just download it. :/

All I'm saying is I'm very disappointed that my framerate in TF2 is so low that it is literally unplayable, so that part of the orange box is dead weight for me.

I mean, I wasn't expecting my computer to run it perfectly, but considering CSS runs smooth as a baby's bottom, I wasn't expecting THIS. And don't tell me that constant development on CSS for the past 7 years isn't part of the reason for that.

That's weird, Free. What's in your system? It runs fine on my C2D E4300, 2 GB of RAM and X1650XT, which is a modest system at best.

If it's really unplayable, then some thing's probably wrong.

i can run it on uber max over here with a full 30-60 FPS.
2007-10-09, 5:16 PM #56
Okay the only thing that I think is dumb from reading that description about Steam is that I need to log in to play single player, what's up with that. Otherwise, guess I'll be okay with Steam.
2007-10-09, 5:21 PM #57
You need to do that once for verification, after that you can play it in offline mode.

OK I won't tell you. But it's true. They've been working on the Source engine constantly since HL2 came out. DoD:S and Lost Coast had HDR, for the easiest example. TF2 has motion blur, "Extended" HDR (whatever that means) and a new particle system, plus the multiplayer scripted voiceovers and facial system, and lineart shaders, just to name the features I can think of ATM. I'm sure there's plenty of ones I can't, too.

If you honestly expect new games to run the same as a 3 year old game, you haven't been paying much attention to the video game industry for the past 25 or so years then.

2007-10-09, 7:22 PM #66
TF2 is just... Awesome. Hell the art style alone makes it awesome.

The talking of the characters in gameplay and all that just bring it to life.
2007-10-09, 7:31 PM #67
Strange that TF2 doesn't run well for you, Freelancer. It works fine for me on a 4 year old laptop that has no graphics driver updates. I assume you've tried messing around with the advanced display settings?

Oh, one thing that has dramatically helped my Source game performance has been to change the amount of RAM the game is allotted. The default is 64MB, but you can raise that up to half of your RAM. You can do it by following the directions for -heapsize here under the "Command Line Options" section.

I turned off HDR and motion blur first thing before I even played the game for the first time.

Good news, I figured it out. Turns out it was the audio...

I played for a few hours just now. It's pretty awesome. My favorite class from each category is the pyro, heavy, and spy.

But TF2 will have to take a backseat to Portal in... 2 hours!

I'm not sure they're still offering the preorder discount anymore, considering the release is two hours away. ;)

As soon as I logged in, there was a giant ad saying "Pre-purchase before Midnight PDT and save 10%". Guess I'm just making it.

Hahaha. I just noticed this. Once you have stuff pre-loaded (for example, Portal), if you double-click on it, a countdown-to-unlock-time pops up. That's awesome. Lessee... 1 hour 30 minutes and 28 seconds to go...
