i swear to god the developers put in glowing eyes to be triggered behind crates that turn off after a second so when you go over there, ready to kill the beast, there's one right behind you, and the glowing eyes were just an illusion. happened so many times and it gets me every time.

this game is ****ing scary as hell.

I hate to say I'm actually a tad disappointed...
I've been playing Halo2 deathmatch (beta) alot, and I'm playing this like that. I'm going around looking for enemies, thinking "it's too dark, damn flashlight" and killing whomever I can like it's deathmatch. I might have gotten slightly grossed out once or twice, but it's almost repetative. I don't know, maybe I have to be in a particular mood to actually get the "excited/scared" feeling. Excited yeah, the graphics rock, even on 800x640, but scared? Slightly surprised yet easily able to comensate because of too much dang deathmatch halo2 beta and quick thinking. (I usualy get 1st place in those games...play it too much :P)

Doom 3 (for me anyways) is the type of game that you're scared to death of when you're actually playing it, but when you're discussing it it's, "Oh man it was so cool when such and such did this to me from behind!" -- however when I'm tired, much like now, I find myself laughing while playing because of some sort of suggestive pose the ragdoll has put a corpse in.

For me, being tired takes away from the experience, as well as having the lights on. Man.. I need a new video card. Playing in 800x600 on Medium still looks awesome, but to know that it could be ten times better is really nagging me. Must get surround sound speakers too!

One thing that's kind of annoying is when there are enemies with guns that are a fair distance away. If it is pitch black, they can see you and aim perfectly, but you need to whip out a flashlight to find them.

Talk about wanting to cry. I was going up to a recharge station, didn't notice a zombie, all of a sudden RIZZAPE.

I turned around and owned it, but still. Man this game is so friggin SWEET. Can't wait for the first boss. I've learned to conserve ammo by rushing the zombies and blasting them. One shotgun shell per zombie/cyberdemon. I would laugh at the ragdoll effects, but all my enemies get incinerated. XD

Vince R0xx0RZ. And also, they're only solid because that's the technology they worked with while creating the game. They also went for an overall darker look. In newer games (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.) the shadows will be amazingly good, as far as soft shadows and everything. The best part of Doom 3 is the dynamic shadowing, and of course, the high-poly models. Woot.

Yes, the shadows are good, but they shouldn't completely block anything. Light bounces off of everything, so even if there was one crate and one light in a room, some light would bounce back to the crate's shadow.

Nice screens Vince.

Bunch of questions for anyone who cares to answer:

How are the zombies?

George Romero zombies (i.e. shambling groaning, need to ventilate their cranium), or the same as the previous games?

How does it compare to Undying or System Shock 2? How are the sounds? Any music?

I see that there's some form of damage modeling from Vince's screens, just per-pixel "stencils" (as in Farcry) or is that an actual hole in the guy's head?

How's the AI? Do your opponents just rush you, or are all the neat things just scripted so that you'll see the same thing every time? Do you cooperate with any NPC at any time?

Any Dopefish sightings? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

The zombies are incredibly easy to take down, as they are slow and stupid. I usually just use the pistol to conserve ammo when I encounter a zombiem, sometimes I bonk them with the flashlight just for the hell of it. Over all the AI seems pretty good, enemies will duck behind cover, stuff like that. Especially in the zombie marines, those guys suck.

2004-08-04, 7:42 AM #101
The zombies are well done, but not terribly dangerous. They move slow, and are easy to pick off. All of the cool stuff is pretty much scripted. Once in a while you'll get ambushed, imps will crawl on walls to get at you (extremely cool). There is barely any cooperation with NPCs.
2004-08-04, 7:54 AM #102
Imps are friggin creepy. They'll crawl around and just jump you from behind. Marines will take cover, move ahead, give cover fire for each other, really good AI actually. So far the Assault Rifle's served me best [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Well, they're zombies. They don't do much except punch you when they get close. There's a few variations, including flaming zombies, chainsaw zombies, and wrench zombies. Pretty much any gun will kill them, but the chainsaw is the most fun.

Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">How does it compare to Undying or System Shock 2? How are the sounds? Any music?</font>

The sounds are what you'd expect. Booms, moaning, creepy voices. There doesn't seem to be any music, except for in the main menu.

Comparing it to SS2 is kinda hard though. It's definately scarier, but SS2 has a lot of exploration, stealth, and character building, while Doom 3 is more action oriented.

Quote:

I didn't actually look that close, but I think it's just a texture.

Quote:

Some opponents will rush at you. The Imps like to take huge leaps at you from twenty feet away. They're really scary when they jump at you right when you open a door. Most of the fun stuff (like the first time you meet a Pinkie) is scripted, but the rest is mostly go/do somewhere/something->spawn creature.

Occaisionally (Three or four times, so far) you cooperate with sentry drones, which lead you to the next area and shoot at enemies with a mounted machine gun. If I see another I'll take a screenshot. There's also a part where a scientist leads you through a dark corridor with his lantern, and you have to protect him from harm.

I just got to the second Alpha Labs level, and...wow. Intense is all I can say. Jon may gripe and whine about the darkness, but, then, they serve the purpose of hiding your enemies before they run in and claw your face off.

You also can't hold a flashlight and a gun at the same time, which I think was a really good idea. It forces you to hang back a little bit -- peek around the corner with the flashlight, check for enemies, then switch to a weapon and take 'em down.

The graphics are solid, even on medium detail, 1024x768. The anti-aliasing, however, hates me -- every time I set it, the game resets it when I load the game. The problem with this is that the anti-aliasing only goes into effect after you restart the game. Thus, I play the game and get JAGGIESJAGGIESJAGGIESJAGGIESJAGGIES on some smaller details (eyeglasses on people's faces are the most noticeable).

As for a comparison against System Shock 2 and Undying, I haven't played SS2, but I think that DooM3 is just as scary as Undying, though in a different manner. Undying created a scary environment, while DooM3 uses the "anything could jump out of the shadows and murder you and your whole family" kind of scary.

Overall, so far it's been worth the $55.

yeah im stuck at the monorail skybridge. after i leave the airlock and go kill those two skullheaded roket throwers out on the mars surface, i dont know where to go. the only door i can see is locked, so i have go back back to the orignal airlock or i die.

other than that... wow... does anyone else by instict turn around when the sreen gets all red? i always think a fireball thrower is gonna spawn behind me. that red screen scares the crap out of me.

yeah echoman, there's mars surfaces inbetween sections of the base.

For those running ATI cards, there are new BETA drivers out that you may want to look into. I'm currently downloading them, I may have a report back later if they do enhance Doom 3, but if i get too engrossed in that game, i can't promise to come back to the boards in a timely manner
