Assuming that's glass... Glass does that after awhile. It warps. All of the windows in my house do it to a small extent. If you were to take a cross section of them, they'd be thicker at the bottom then at the top. I do find it strange, however, that the warping there appears to be side to side... not up and down... Gravity is what warps them. The only possible explaination for that would be that the glass was laying in a different direction for awhile before it was installed.

I'm looking too far into this, eh?

Hah, it does look rather odd. And pointy. They couldn't spare the extra 24 triangles to make it 16-sided? Psh...

Edit: Actually, it looks only 6 sided, which would require 30 more triangles to make it 16 sided.

But while it is funny to use, I find it disruptive to the otherwise grim and svary mood of the game, because when I got my paws on it, I didn't use anything else for like two levels, running around laughing like a maniac. 'twas like being transported from Night of the Living Dead to Evil Dead 2.

Doom 3 owns!! Runs on medium.. Oh well.. nice game, good graphics, and it doesn't run too bad on my GeForce 4 ti4600. I suggest anyone to buy it, Multiplayer is slower than I thought but it is still awsome. People are working on a Co-Op mod as well.

AMAZING game. AMAZINGLY well optimized. 2.03 GHz AMD Athlon XP ThoroughBred, 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM, and a Ti4400 slightly overclocked--1024x768 medium, 2xaa, 2xaf, 30+ fps. Hawtness.

Way WAAY early in the game (like before the accident I think?) theres a porn magazine I noticed...only because my Farcry playing experiences force me to look at every magazine I see. You can't see much...as it's all a bunch of boxy pixels...but still.

I am kind of thinking which card I am going to buy, because I have to keep in consideration that there are other games coming like half life 2, Halo 2 and other great games. Some reviewers has said that ATI will perform much better than Nvidia cards on half life 2 if this is true then I would like to go for ATI cards. Can someone help me in this one.....?
2004-08-04, 10:15 PM #136
From the looks of it, ATI will be preferable for HL2, but I am sure a newer generation Nvdia (ie, 6800) would do you just fine.

If you're going with second-gen cards, I'd go with ATi. 9600 pro, 9600XT, 9800, 9800 pro. If you're going with the current generation of cards, I'd suggest nVidia, unless you're an AA/AF freak, then get ATi. 6800 GT for nVidia, X800 XT for ATi.

IMO, my 9600 PRO really isn't cutting it for Doom 3. I'm running at 800x600 with medium detail, and AFAIK no AA or AF. The game usually runs at 60 fps when nothing is happening, and when moving around simple architecture, but combat and some detailed archi/effect drops it to 30-40 fps. When it gets really hectic, it dips to 20-30 fps. I expected a bit more steady framerate than this jumpy crap, I also thought I'd be able to run it at 1024x780 @ medium. Oh, and there are jaggies EVERYWHERE! I'm talking like Half-Life jaggies everywhere.

Does anyone know what the bottleneck is for my PC?

Radeon 9600 PRO
AMD Barton 2500+ (not OC'ed at the moment)
512 MB PC3200

I could OC the processor I suppose, and I'd consider throwing in another stick of 512. What kind of performance increase would I see from doing this?

The game is great so far... except that it's kiiling my computer. Right now I'm running at low in 1280x1024. I can run in medium detail at 800x600, but I prefer to run at a higher resolution. Besides, the drop in quality isn't very noticeable when you're moving. It would be playable on high detail except there's too much slowdown when, say, a door opens into a new area. I somehow expected to get slightly better performance from my computer.

Connection--that's how it is for EVERYONE. Steady fps in Doom 3 is like 30, not 60. Yeah, I have 2xaa 2xaf and I'm getting 30+ fps, most the time.

30 fps is still 2 fps faster than the human eye can see...
DO NOT WANT.
2004-08-05, 7:44 AM #143
Whatever happens to Doom 3 (it will be a big hit anyway), this game at the base will be a foundation for future licensing of the new engine. The plot is old, the multiplayer doesn't exist figuratively, and there is nothing special about the interactivity of the game in comparison to the upcoming Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. Doom 3 is going to be a great art piece.

I would still get it, though, but my computer only has half of the system requirements.

Uh no? The human eye can see up to like 72fps, but most people can only see differences between 50 fps or so. Trust me, I can tell the difference between 30 and 40 fps.

The game is running awesome for me, 1024*768 med, no AA. And I am on a 2GHZ P4, 512mb PC2100, Radeon 9800np OC. I was expecting much worse framerates than I am getting, which is around like 50-60 most of the time. I have never had it drop during hectic areas, it always stays nice and high. I had my doubts about how it would run, but i am very pleased [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I thought the human eye could only see 24 frames per second. It's somewhere in the 20's, I'm fairly certain.

But monitors don't refresh all at once, like TVs do, so a lower framerate can still be noticable. But VSync helps with that.

i get ~30fps average on high detail at 1024x768

so yeah... the game takes alot of pc to run it

in fact i really probably should run at medium but maybe after i beat the game once ... you really notice the difference between high and medium when you look at someone's face up close and a few other areas it's noticable

You can easily tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps by looking at the fluidity of movement.

What Vince said. That's why with monitors you can't tell a difference past 50 or so FPS, for the most part. Some people's eyes are more sensitive, though.

Haven't we been over this a million times before? Just because your eye can only see individual frames at that speed doesn't mean things don't look much better at higher rates, because the more frames you can jam into the time your eye is recieving information, the more of a motion blur you get, and the better the movement looks.

I recall that studies have shown some fighter pilots can detect up to about 220fps, most people are in the 150fps region.

Television, movies etc are shown at lower framerates because of the nature of the content, if something is recorded at the same rate as it will be displayed, there is natural blurring which means playback looks smooth. Whereas with computer displays, the rendering is realtime so every frame/redraw is crisp and precise so a low framerate looks a lot more jumpy.

Oh joy, more issues with a game I'm not even sure is worth the time.

Everytime I start the game is comes up and says
"unknown command vid_restart
idRenderSystem::Shutdown()
Shutting down OpenGL subsystem..
...shutting down QGL
couldn't load default.cfg"

It actually ran the first two or three times but after it crashed I get this. >.<

And yes I did try reinstalling...
