Appears that she is going to get the VP slot from McCain. A couple of months ago I wouldn't have thought she would be seriously considered. I like most of what I have heard and read of her. Seems a little risky. Could slide a virtually guaranteed McCain victory down to just a highly likely McCain victory of Obama because some voters likely won't turn out just because a woman is on the ticket. Then again, I'm sure some will just because she is. Then again Obama has a similar situation in his ticket.

Hopefully I'll still be in country on October 2 for the VP debate. Should be interesting to see Biden and her go at it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're fairly even right now. Not that polls right now are any real indication of what will happen in November.

The only hope Obama has of getting elected is a depressed Republican turn out and that those who watch the debates forget how badly he is stomped by McCain. Obama, as of yet, has not shown an ability to perform well under direct and challenging questions. He stammers and stumbles and fails to give concise direct answers to most questions. Also, the fact that his ticket is so far left works against him because this is a right-of-center society.

O_o

The only reason McCain is doing so well is because all of his ads spread lies and attack Obama.

And as the election draws nearer, more people will realize that McCain, who used to be an independent maverick, has lost the balls to stand up to his party and to the corporations bankrolling him, and is just a miserable old fool who probably doesn't know how to FIND most of his houses, let alone how many he actually has.

There's a lot of things I disagree with on Obama. I don't always trust everything he says. But between McCain and Obama, Obama is the best hope for this country. Obama's family is the epitome of the American dream. Two people who came from poor families, who through their hard work were able to the best schools in the country, start a strong family, and fight for change in the world. McCain is the epitome of uh... a veteran who cheated on his crippled wife and then married a beer heiress? I don't see the appeal.

well, obama's "big government" issues are perfectly capable of sinking his campaign without any help of the mcCain attack ads, imo.

[quote=The Washington Monthly]
A CONFOUNDING CHOICE.... Charles Homans offers some very helpful background in an item below about Sarah Palin, but I have to admit, I'm still struggling to understand what on earth the McCain campaign is thinking here.

* McCain has spent the last several years insisting that the most important qualities in a candidate for national office are experience and a background in national security. Sarah Palin was, up until recently, the mayor of a town of 9,000 people, and is currently the governor of a small state with a part-time legislature, with one-and-a-half years under her belt.

* McCain may want to improve his appeal among women voters, but he skipped right past more qualified Republican women -- women he actually knows -- such as Kay Bailey Hutchison, Elizabeth Dole, and Olympia Snowe, all of whom would have brought genuine credibility to a ticket.

* In an election season in which voters desperately want change, McCain has picked a hard-right conservative. I mean, really conservative. We're talking about a former activist for Pat Buchanan, staunch opponent of reproductive rights, global-warming denier, and skeptic of modern biology. There's a reason every right-wing group in America is jumping up and down with glee this afternoon.

* The usual pattern is for Republicans to reach national office and then face ethics investigation for alleged wrongdoing. This year, the GOP seems willing to reverse this, putting a governor on the national ticket who's already facing an ethics investigation.

* She recently asked what a Vice President does all day. How encouraging.

* Can anyone, anywhere, explain why Sarah Palin would make a good president? Given that McCain is a 72-year-old man with a history of health trouble, isn't this a rather important question right now?

I realize Palin is new, which necessarily generates some excitement. But I can't help but find this announcement utterly bizarre, and completely devoid of seriousness.

I heartily endorse Kevin's take: "This whole thing is crazy.... I'm just stunned by the cynicism of the whole thing. I'm sure Palin is a fine person, loving mother, devoted wife, learning her way as governor, and so forth. But a heartbeat away from the presidency? ... You gotta be kidding."

I don't know much about her other than my boyfriend's family, especially his native-Alaskan step-mom, can't stand her as governor. From what I've read of her thus far...I'm really not sure why he chose her, other than the fact she's a young(er) Republican woman.

He doesn't come across that way when addressing voters. He will smoke Obama in at least two of the three debates. McCain's presidential campaigning over the last eight years will have prepared him far better than Obama's teleprompter recitals.

He needed to pick a conservative and the fact that she is a successful woman with a record of fighting Republican corruption cinched it.

McCain has now made it blatantly obvious that he makes all his decisions from polls. Count me out.

And before you think it'd be absurd that someone wouldn't vote for a woman-VP-ticket my dad is among that group of strange people.

McCain has made so many stupid mistakes it's mind boggling. From using Obama's popularity against him by portraying him as a celebrity and that's bad(did he forget about Arnold, one of his biggest supporters, and Reagan, the Republican party's god?) to insinuating that he has better judgement than Obama. But then he picks Palin as his VP when Romney was standing right there. Romney would have been a very good counterpart to McCain, what with being the economic powerhouse of either party(something McCain admits to knowing nothing about) and having way more applicable executive experience than McCain or Obama. Romney could probably also handle Biden in debates since he's not a pushover. But Romney was having issues with evangelicals. A group McCain doesn't usually do well with anyway, so that somehow means he can't pick Romney. But he doesn't pick someone else who would help his ticket. Instead he picks Palin. An Alaskan governor that hasn't even served a full term as governor and has no other executive experience. If this is a ploy to get more Clinton supporters, it'll only work if the Clinton supporters are incredibly stupid and sexist. Palin's politics are no where near to Clinton's politics. If you wanted to go to more shallow reasons, Palin doesn't even come from a swing state, where having her on the ticket could give that state to McCain. Palin is a horrendous choice that brings absolutely nothing substantial to the ticket. McCain had a chance to really gain an edge with Obama picking Biden, who doesn't bring much to that ticket but still more than Palin does, and he ****ed it up. He can no longer criticize Obama's inexperience with a shred of credibility.

Note: If you think I'm just a Romney fanboy, I planned to vote Barr even if Romney was picked.

Guys we are ****ed.

Obama wins, he gets shot. Maybe he lives but everyone will be asking "will he ever ball again?"

McCain wins, and we get wonderful footage of him crawling under desks during fireworks every fourth of july, and after he keels over, his VP gets shot.

**** man. Had McCain picked Romney I would have been somewhat comfortable if he had won. But now, I don't know, it just scares the **** out of me to think what will happen at home. At least I would still get to go to Iraq.

Obama, well, hopefully he is a man like Andrew Jackson who will beat the **** out of would be attackers with a cane. Wait, McCain would have a cane...

So we're either going to have a woman vice president or a black President. This should be interesting.

On a side note, Sarah Palin looks like the stereotypical uptight secretary/bureacrat, but in actuallity she has a very kinky side. If you seen that one episode of Futurama, you probably know what I mean.
