2 Questions that are not covered by the rules:

1. Can we make multiple submissions?

2. Can we submit DF levels?
2009-09-29, 6:03 AM #82
1. Yes, but only one can win.

2. No.

I'll add these to the rules.

If I can get Jed/Zed working decently on my windows VM I will likely enter this contest. Or, is there a way to dual-boot a mac but instead of using the primary hard drive to run windows, use a USB thumb drive?
2009-09-29, 12:30 PM #86
ZED should run fine in a VM. In fact, it should run fine under Wine.

2009-09-29, 12:33 PM #87
I'm actually running a mac for this :( I have quite a ferry ride to/from work 3 days per week, so I have some time, but only on a mac. I'll try it in the vm later. (Does Zed still have the cd check?)
2009-09-29, 12:43 PM #88
You can run Wine in OS X. If you don't want to mess with that (I wouldn't) you can run it in a VM. If you have it, Parallels would be the most convenient. It should even play JK. For that matter, so should Wine.

It doesn't have a CD check anymore.

Cool. I am actually running vmware fusion. I remember last time I tried wine (on linux), the jk installer worked but jk itself completely failed.
2009-09-29, 1:20 PM #90
Brian - can you let me know if you get it to work? I'm looking for games to play under vmware fusion too!
2009-09-29, 1:47 PM #91
I'll let you know. If it doesn't run suitably I'm leaning towards just dual-booting (with boot camp). I won't be able to test until tomorrow morning as I don't have the JK disks with me.
2009-09-29, 1:57 PM #92
Fair enough. I've forked out £50 for Fusion, and I don't fancy undoing all that for the sake of dual booting...
2009-09-29, 2:02 PM #93
What do you mean undoing? I use vmware fusion to run windows (for work) and linux (for work), but in general it's pretty slow (I'm on an older white macbook, still a dual-core, though). A real dual-boot ought to be a lot faster.

As an aside, does JK/Zed run under Windows Vista?
2009-09-29, 2:18 PM #94
Yes

Rad, thanks.
2009-09-29, 2:29 PM #96
Sorry, I meant wasting my money on virtualisation only to have to use dual booting more (and ANOTHER partition)
2009-09-29, 3:33 PM #97
Is Mysteries of the Sith also not allowed?
2009-09-29, 3:39 PM #98
MotS is allowed, according to CM's post a few up.
2009-09-29, 3:39 PM #99
Anyone know where I can get the jk (or mots) demo download?
2009-09-29, 4:23 PM #100
Zed seems to work great in VMWare Fusion. I turned on 3d accel in the virtual machine settings although I'm not sure it makes a difference. I can't seem to find a demo download anywhere (for jk or mots) so I'll have to check JK tomorrow (I'll grab my disks from home).
2009-09-29, 9:13 PM #101
Hey, this is off to a good start. So far we've got six people who have actually gotten underway and like three or four others intending to participate.

if you can't find it, I have one on CD. I'd have to dig around for it but I bet its not any larger than 50mb

Thanks anyway, I just wanted to try the game out in my vm on my way home. Since I wasn't able to find it yesterday, I didn't get to try it. But I've got the disks now and am going to see what happens.

Agreed! And there might be a few surprises - like last time where the two other entries I'd heard nothing of. Although this comp is on the forum so I doubt that would happen this time ... unless??!?!

It appears to suck. Using 3d acceleration in-game causes it to crash and completely screws up windows (needs a reboot). Using the software renderer appears to work but the mouse is so fast I can barely see what is going on. I turned the sensitivity all the way down and it's still horrible. The mouse cursor is a square block for some reason (in the menu screens).
2009-09-30, 7:42 AM #106
And now I can't even get the software renderer to work. It just crashes constantly. When I change the screen res, it just resizes the "view" (a small portion of the screen will be jedi knight, the rest will be black). Oh well, I'll try dual-boot later. The good news is that Zed seems to work fine so I can do some work on my level.

That's odd, JK runs flawlessly under VMware Workstation.

I've been less and less impressed with vmware lately. I used to run vmware workstation at home, on debian, running virtual instances of windows & of other linux distros. It used to load quickly and resume the suspended vms within a few seconds. After upgrading to some version, everything got slow and annoying. I've never been very impressed with vmware fusion, it's always been slow. I don't really have a problem dual-booting. I guess I have to read up on where to find drivers for my mac hardware, though.
2009-09-30, 9:52 AM #111
So here's an interesting thing. You can install boot camp, install windows xp/vista to dual-boot, and then both vmware fusion and parallels can see that boot camp partition and start it up within osx as a virtual machine. This means I can use it running natively or as a virtual machine -- I bet it will work better natively. I wonder if there are weird driver switching issues. I'm going to give it a try, although it looks like I have to buy windows :( What a nightmare.
2009-09-30, 11:06 AM #112
Sounds like a lot of work to start up JK again, haha.... :(
2009-09-30, 1:22 PM #113
Well, it's mainly so I can work on a level while I'm on the ferry. My computer at home dual boots so I have windows available there.

Argh, boot camp is a nightmare, too. Get this, in order to free up enough contiguous space to make a partition, it copies files all over the place like crazy. With ~75GB of free space it can't find enough contiguous space to make a 5 gb partition. In order to "fix" this, they recommend... backing up your entire hard drive, wiping it, then restoring from backup. *sigh*
2009-09-30, 1:28 PM #114
Macs are smrt
2009-09-30, 1:29 PM #115
macs are my worst nightmare. Well, close anyway
2009-10-02, 7:48 PM #116
Ugh, I've gotten next to nothing done... not sure if I'll have what I want done by the due date. Just too busy with life, and unfortunately when I sit down with time on the computer... I'd much rather play a game than mod it, haha..... *cough*

Well we'll see. Maybe it'll just be a short SP level

I see I'm also a registered Citizen.... how ironic....
2009-10-02, 8:59 PM #117
I've got mine all drawn out on paper. I started with ZED on my vm and it sucks because I can't use half the keyboard shortcuts (any of the Function keys, number pad keys, etc.). But I'm hoping to have an entry. I'm trying to keep it fairly simple, but still interesting. Not any real puzzles, just a fun place to explore and kill things.
2009-10-06, 9:04 AM #118
I thought I could participate in this, but editing on a mac through vmware fusion just sucks. None of the function keys work, they don't seem to get passed through to the guest OS, instead, they do all the mac functionality. That means any time I want to use a function key, I have to go up to the commands/keyboard menu with my mouse, what a nightmare. I doubt I'll get much done :(
2009-10-06, 9:16 AM #119
so brian are you seriously telling us you don't have a PC you could use?

after buying your mac did justin long break into your house and steal all your PCs?

Hold Fn while pressing the function keys.
