Is a JK3 remake of an existing JK2 level allowed? For the past few weeks, I've been working on one, you see.

I vote yes, but I have no say in it whatsoever.

As long as it doesn't break copyright by using JK textures or what have you, it's fine.

Ok, thanks. Why would you actually want to use JK textures for a JK3 map?
2009-10-15, 7:58 AM #167
The answer to that question may be very Mysterious.

CM won't give me ssh access. Oh well.

You make it sound as if I rejected you.

You had a previous SSH key already in there, so you should have had access. In either case, the SSH key you have for your massassi.com site is now usable for massassi.net as well, with the username massassi.

NO EXCUSES.

As long as we're discussing feelings, I certainly felt rejected. I need Oprah. Anyway, yeah my key only allowed me access to massassi.com before, not massassi.net. I'll log in when I get home and see what I can do. THANKS!

Wait. You're remaking a Jedi Outcast map in Jedi Academy?

Several things :

Uhhhh. WTF?
Post shots in the showcase thread, not here.
Shouldn't it look... better, then?
WTF?
2009-10-15, 2:31 PM #173
I think he means from JK to JO -- just look at the shots.
2009-10-15, 2:34 PM #174
I don't recognize the level.

Is it from the original game? Or something Nebula did?
2009-10-15, 2:55 PM #175
It looks like double-cross.
COUCHMAN IS BACK BABY
2009-10-15, 3:52 PM #176
When I think of that level now, all I see is Zell's.
2009-10-15, 5:51 PM #177
The second shot made it pretty obvious.
2009-10-16, 1:57 AM #178
No, it's from JO (NS once again) to JK3, just look at the HUD... I didn't think it would be allowed for the contest because it says the level cannot have been published before on Massassi.
2009-10-16, 10:38 AM #179
Ok I guess I'm totally wrong? Why would you want to convert a level from JO to JA? Did you actually remake the level from scratch in an editor or did you just use the map from JO and somehow import it into JA? Just to clarify:

JK = Jedi Knight = Dark Forces II
JO = Jedi Outcast = Jedi Knight II
JA = Jedi Academy = Jedi Knight III
2009-10-16, 10:42 AM #180
Yeah, I know that... I got the .map file from the original author and change things scripting, lighting, texturing.
2009-10-16, 10:44 AM #181
Ok -- so it's a custom map from JO -- not one that came with JO in the first place. So you're asking if you can re-release a previously released custom map (that was previously released for JO) in JA, with the scripting, lighting, and texturing redone. That's a question for CM.
2009-10-16, 10:49 AM #182
Exactly. JA comes with new features and stuff like dynamic glow which I think make it worthwhile to do a little remake, if not for a contest then just for fun.
2009-10-16, 10:50 AM #183
But what is the name of the original map

I don't think that's really in the spirit of the contest. You're not making your own level, you're just enhancing someone elses'.

You're right, I guess. And the original is called NS once again .
2009-10-16, 12:33 PM #186
Wait, I'm still not clear on this. If you are remaking from scratch an existing level, it seems to me that it would be okay. If you are just souping up an existing map, it seems not in the spirit of the contest.

I have to say recreating an existing custom-made JK/MotS SP map for JA would be a splendid idea, maybe not contest material but still pretty cool.

Yeah that'd be okay. But he said he was taking the .map and just redoing textures/scripts/etc. That's not kosher in my book.

I apologize if this is somewhere earlier in the thread. I am having trouble locating and remembering what tools are required for JK. I would definitely like to make something though.

I'm going to install windows on my mac (for real dual boot) tonight so hopefully that goes well and I can start testing in-game. Wish me luck. I have to basically wipe the drive and then reimage it to free up enough contiguous space at the end of the drive. Even though I have ~100GB free the bootcamp partioner thing is too stupid to rearrange the files. Pah.
2009-11-01, 2:13 AM #199
I was finally able to spend the time to get a native windows installation running on my stupid mac. This now allows me to run JK. Happily, my work was not for naught as I did indeed get the scale right. Jed and JK both run great (windows xp on a macbook w/bootcamp). I was going to take some snapshots but the lighter plugin screwed up my face flags (transparencies) and now it looks stupid. I guess I have to fix them up after the fact (sigh).

The bad news is that even in a relatively simple area, I was already over the adjoin limit (got major HOM for no reason). After applying the jk unofficial patch, it went away. This means people must use it to play the level. Oh well.
2009-11-05, 5:09 PM #200
Hey umm... I was wondering if you could extend the date to the end of december? Then my level could be included. I don't have time to work on it because of college...
