That's because you completely switched your point mid-thread. Nowhere in your first post does it mention neglegent parents or whatever your latest rant is. This thread was originally about showing graphic material to young kids. You have a serious problem: you keep responding to people with this "You're not reading my threads! You're missing the point!" crap, when in reality, it's because you keep changing your point.

I think the reason you think sex ed isn't effective is because you think the aim of sex ed is to stop people having underage or premarital sex.

When people get horny, they want sex. The aim of sex ed is to make sure people at least don't get pregnant or get an STD if they decide to act on their impulses, which they will.

The desire to reproduce is the basically the most powerful biological urge, if someone gets that desire when they're still very young it's going to be very hard for them to ignore it. So the second-best option is to make sure they don't ruin their own or someone else's life in the process.

Yes you can ignore it. It's something called self-controll. It's what most people have been useing for the past 500 years. Self controll is why you don't kill people who make you mad.

You're telling me you think sex-before-marriage is a relatively new thing? You think for 500 years mankind was successful able to control all urge to have pre-marital sex or sex at a young age?

Self control has only existed since 1504?

I don't know how old you are or what you've been exposed to, but teens have sex. They do it in other cultures, and they've been doing it for a long time. Pretending something doesn't happen will result in teen pregnancy, disease, and other fun things like that. Accepting its existence and then educating teens about its risks is important. It's also important to help teens cope with puberty.

As far as the issue of teaching about homosexuality: Though it may conflict with your morals or beliefs, for whatever reason, the truth is that some teens are gay. If they aren't aware of that possibility, or aren't reassured that there's some sort of acceptance for that, they might become confused or depressed. Once again, puberty can be a maelstrom of conflicting and confounding emotions.

You seem to want to impose an idealistic sort of innocence upon pre-teens and teens. Besides, forcing your morals upon an entire nation would be tantamount to fascism, no?

What confuses me about American culture is the regard for sex as this great evil. It's an interesting twist on Judeochristian mores. If you want to address problems with kids, perhaps the rampantly violent media culture would be a good place to start.

This idea of completely stopping premarital sex would seem completely reactionary in nature, except for the fact that there is no point to revert to when premarital sex did not occur. Even during the Victorian era, which attempted to appear prudish, had pre-marital sex, as well as teenaged prostitutes who slept with older men. The Puritan idea of courting was not just a date. Going back to my comment about homosexuality, Greek culture accepted sex between men and boys. There are countless historical examples. Essentially, the point I'm trying to make is that some of these impulses are part of humanity, not just a societal "evil" which must be eliminated.

Let me re-state *again* simply. 1. I think that it's *bad* that parents have become so wrapped up in their personal lives that they care so little for their kids.

If you're referring to the fact often both parents these days work (as you did in the last thread on this) I'd like to again point out that in today's day and age it's often necessary. Ideally I'd like either my wife or me to be able to spend more time at home with our soon to be kids, but if we want to own our own home (in a non crappy neighbourhood) or send our kids to good schools, one income won't do that. A lot of the parents you see as bad and self involved are more than likely working their asses off so they can put their kids through college.

It's a fine balancing act between looking after the kids at home and being in a position to provide the kind of environment for them. It's really not an easy thing to juggle and I'm not sure you appreciate that.

Yes, but often, at least in the US, parents work overtime, or both parents work, so that the kids can ride around in a new SUV, have an XBox, a nice PC, and a pool, often in neglect of the children themselves. They say "But it's for my kids", and while it may be true, and they may have their childs best interest in mind, it might not be what will be best for the child. Kids don't need to ride aorund in the biggest SUV, they need parents.

True, there is definitely a difference between providing the right environment for your kids and being a walking ATM for them.....and yeah, that whole SUV thing is just insane.

There are plenty of cases where parents put their careers ahead of their kids and they justify it by saying they are doing it for their kids. That sucks for the kids. If both parents have to work to make ends meet, that's something different

You stated your point was that you don't think that sex ed will teach kids about sex, and give them principals and morals. Yes, it's sad that parents don't teach them, but school DOES. And it doesn't teach morals because pushing their idealistic morals onto young and impressionable kids would be WRONG.

This thread is FILLED with reasons why Sex Ed is importent, and DOES help quite a few kids, not just 2 or 3. I mean, I thought sex was done through the belly button until 5th grade.

Do. Not. Ignore. This. Post.

At our school, we should've had sex ed in like middle school instead of in 9th GRADE!!!! All the boys knew about it, so it was nothing new for us and we aced the test. But the girls were just so naive. I mean, it was awful. I mean, didn't know any of the body parts, the basic procedure, hell, some girl didn't even know that the "penis" was involved in sex.

Oh and everybody, please try and keep this within the rules. This is exactly the type of thread that, can we say, get out of control.

The whole point was not to promote homosexuality, but all it's done is meant that kids no longer have the option of talking to their teachers if they're confused and can't go to their parents. It's seriously stupid.

It's not surprising how Margaret Thatcher was the least popular Prime Minister since opinion polls began.

In a speech where she compared gay rights compaigners to the fascist threat in the Second World War, she said something like "In the place of the bombs of 50 years ago, you find yourselves bombarded with images and ideas which are utterly alien". She later denied that she was saying that gays are Nazis.

In the same year, 1988, she also banned the media from broadcasting interviews with the IRA.

This is what you get when you vote conservative. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Howard is doing a good job playing the anti-American and anti-Blair card, but I shudder to think what the conservatives would do if they got their claws in again.
