The Replacements?!

Honestly, I don't know jack about this period / genre. I do like the second song of the two you posted by the replacements.

I find it fascinating to see the confluence of different genres in this time period. TBQH I'm not oure which band REM takes inspiration from (if any), but I know that Pixies' frontman Black Francis was influence by punk, but also by The Beatles and also New Wave. It is also interesting to think of Kurt Cobain, who loved The Beatles, but of course was a big alt. rock / grunge figure.

I honestly know very little about punk. I've listened more to New Wave bands like The Police and also Elvis Costello (or is he just considered punk?).

Also, I am very tired. :-)

Actually, I think a lot of the bands (REM, Pixies) I seem to like might have a sound that can be traced back to the Byrds. Of course back then in the 60's you were expected to sing coherently. :P

Of course if you ask them personally they might tell you that it was the Velvet Underground that inspired them, but I haven't heard much from them that got me too excited.

Have you listened to "The Velvet Underground" (rather than "The Velvet Underground & Nico")?

The latter-just a song or two from album with that Andy Warhol banana album cover.

Give the first one a shot. If you've tried to enjoy VU in the past but haven't, you might find that that album is more accessible.

Well, if I am to believe my phone, that album with the banana is the debut of The Velvet Underground (and Nico), but TBF I didn't really give it much of a shot, so much as a brief sample. What I heard mostly sounded like Bob Dylan. I'll listen to it more carefully from the beginning some time.
2017-10-11, 2:40 PM #328
Oops. By the first one I meant the first of the two I mentioned in my last post (I.e., The Velvet Underground). The VU + Nico was their debut.

Ah, okay. I'll listen to that one then.

Supposedly a big influence on R.E.M.

And influenced by the Velvet Underground. Another reason, I guess to give that second album a listen.
2017-10-11, 11:35 PM #331
The Ocean Blue.

Apparently, they cite R.E.M. as an influence.

That opening track on the Velvet Underground's self-titled track? Brilliant. I'm on the second track and it's pretty good too. I never get sick of 60's organ riffs. This album feels like a dream so far (especially Candy Says, listen to it guys!). Heading to sleep....

Good focus/study music while practicing differential topology ****. Down for 80's Synthwave in general tho.

Get this book for basic differential topology stuff if you have the slightest interest in dynamics or geometry and want to see the subject illustrated vividly in that light:

That last song on The Velvet Underground is just the most adorable little ditty about being dead.

2017-10-13, 3:37 PM #336
LMAO this is ****ing awful.

What a shameful desecration of the beautiful rendition of the original, above.

He gets the accent right at least. lol

And also to be completely fair, Moe Tucker was totally off-key in the original as well (though in the most endearing way!). I just don't see why he had to change half of the words and turn it into some kind of drunken honky-tonk song (I half expected the audience to start clapping along).

Oh hell, why not:

I've never actually listened to Dylan's later stuff. Funny to see him singing along to power chords. Actually made me start humming Pete's guitar work in this, lol

In this thread, we desecrate the works of Lou Reed, and John Lennon.

Ahah. Well that just feels a little wrong.

I recognized the name of the guy who did that, though. He's also responsible for this.

Hahah, his music never fails to make me laugh.

TIL Michael Stipe recorded this song almost completely naked.

This again gets a mention in that video!

Can somebody do an experiment for me and try to embed that last video in

Okay, now it's working again. Weird.
