I was with you until "Fat Asian". I hated the character and the casting choice, but I wouldn't call the actress fat and I don't see the relevance. Saying that is just off-putting to me and detracts from your post.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I get it. ill say 'Female-Schrek. Although its not trying to insult her, its more she has a short awkward appearance.
2017-12-30, 7:18 PM #243
I know you’re making fun of somebody, but I’ll be damned if I know who.
2017-12-30, 7:27 PM #244
Referring to her as a female Shrek is unrealistic and juvenile in my opinion. Above all, though, I don't see why you'd need to include any criticism of her appearance as it's not pertinent at all.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

What's wrong with being Asian and chubby? Her character was likeable IMO.

The subplot with Finn and Rose did turn out to be pointless, though.

Absolutely nothing. And if you are even insinuating you would not take HER over Lily Aldridge Or Gisele any night.
You are SEXIST and RACIST and you probably voted for Trump

What wasted potential we have in Finn so far. His background is interesting and the actor is charismatic (as are the actors for Rey and Kylo). You could do wonderful things with a defected former stormtrooper. Now I wish I were a screenwriter, but I understand that it's actually a pretty difficult job and me getting enamored with my own ideas doesn't mean they'd translate into anything decent for viewers!

I think TFA/TLJ is a reason to be happy you did NOT become a screenwriter, since it probably means whatever great ideas you had wouldn't check whatever harebrained set of boxes Disney / LucasFilm needed you to check to meet their priorities (e.g., you failing to have a vagina).

Finn didn't test well IIRC.

Emphasis added:
Five days a week, in the foggy hills of San Francisco, 11 writers and artists discuss the minutiae of storm troopers. This is the Lucasfilm story group, and its members hold the keys to everything “Star Wars”: Under their guidance, the franchise’s narratives are linked no matter the platform, whether it’s television, games, theme parks, publishing, merchandise or, of course, film. With their ideas shaping each character and setting, they don’t see themselves as gatekeepers but as partners furthering the stories their creators want to tell.

Kathleen Kennedy founded the group in 2012 when she succeeded George Lucas as president of Lucasfilm, putting Kiri Hart, a former film and TV writer, in charge of the unit. Ms. Hart’s first move was to make the story group entirely female, starting with Rayne Roberts and Carrie Beck. Both women had experience in film development but had also worked in other arenas — Ms. Roberts in magazine publishing, and Ms. Beck with the Sundance Institute.
Not that that's a bad thing. And Kroko could have been hired after the initial formation of the group, since they later on removed the gender imbalance.
Today, the Lucasfilm story group is a diverse outlier in Hollywood: five of its members are people of color, and the team includes four women and seven men. This is a rarity in 2017, where women account for 13 percent, and minorities represent 5 percent, of all writers working on the top-grossing films. In addition to maintaining the continuity of the “Star Wars” universe, they aim to increase its diversity. This goal has sometimes led to struggles over their female characters.

As much of a "contribution" as an FGR post can be.

Alas, that guy is a throwback to those times when this place was more frequented by his type of Couchmans, Sarn_Cadrills, ragnas, Squirrel Kings, MechWarriors, Joren Darkstars et al. At least we're mostly clear of that kind of personae these days (tho' some Reverend Jones posts this year have been interesting, to say the least).

For better or for worse, what I write here is mostly uninhibited and not necessarily above moronical.

Also, FGR my man, I was completely joking about having wished for Christmas that you'd been banned.

Gotta say though, I’m shocked to hear the new movie has racist caricatures of rich white people. Shocked! I never would have thought that trash would be tolerated in Star Wars. What’s next? A covetous Jew? Some treacherous Japanese? Drug addled Jamaicans?? British officers shown dominating other cultures and slaughtering savages in the woods???

@Jones: Yeah, that's our thing (i.e. the gist of your last two posts) in Massassi of today.

Back in the day it might have been "can you make Jon`C snap so that he makes a thread about you" (sorry about that), but now it's the "FGR OG Koobie antics" thing.

(Also, my underlying intentions of "you know, if you ban me from Massassi I won't have a reason to visit this place ever again" are undermined by just refraining from logging in while banned will still let you view the site, so in the long run I wouldn't gain a thing from it! But it's our shtick now for all my poll threads.)

Earlier this week I was curious about the Episode I racial stereotypes. Interestingly enough, there is some advanced level rationalization for that crap on Quora. Some of it is sorta convincing, but I still think that GL has some old fashioned stereotypes bouncing around in his lazy head just the same.

It makes sense that someone who's creating what are effectively cartoon characters would unwittingly rely on racist stereotypes. Cartoon characters are often one dimensional, being driven by simple motivations and having a simple, uncomplicated set of personality traits. If you want to make clear what those motivations and personality traits are, you might want that character's physical appearance to signal what they are. The problem is that physical traits don't in and of themselves convey personality. The only reason why we associate certain physical traits with behaviors is because we have developed through convention a kind of visual language that associates personality traits with physical traits. But, of course, those conventions have racist origins. So if you rely on that visual language, you may unwitting inject racism into your story.

This entire post was like engineered to be ****ing stupid.

Rose was not at all a bad character. The only real problems I have is that, the way they introduced her via a total gag scene undermined the initial perception of her as a serious character, many of here scenes being pretty much inconsequential for the plot, and the way the dust-speeders thing played out with her and Finn kinda broke the continuity of the entire battle and wasn't very satisfying. Which aren't even so much problems with her character as they are complaints about the story itself.

It's as if some people are uncomfortable being shown an Asian woman who isn't conforming to various stereotypes, like being quiet and submissive.

Edit: not to mention the comments about her looks, which if you thought about it for a bit are actually pretty offensive.

For some reason I don't think their thoughts are as complicated as "let's try to attract women into watching Star Wars by hiring only women writers". They probably just thought, rightly so, that, since writing can be done well by both genders, and there's a horrible gender imbalance, that they'd hire some women. Like it's really just that simple.

Agreed, Finn was somewhat interesting but is virtually unused in TLJ, in the sense that he does literally nothing of consequence.

We could probably argue that some SW characters reflect a sort of implicit stereotype about some groups. Someone else may want to do that, this level of amateur psychoanalyzing feels pointless.

The kind of amateur psychoanalyzing I do find interesting tho is figuring out why Wookie the money cuck loves being owned by the party he votes for constantly.

This. As movies are more global, it feels more and more movies are written for baseline human understanding, so like you said, they can be translated easily into as many languages as possible without having to redo jokes or other bits of difficult-to-translate bits.

Not that I care one iota about this issue, but I think this is simplistic assuming that is indirectly (IMO) contradicted by the kind of things of the writers conveyed in that very article:
Ms. Hart, now senior vice president of development at Lucasfilm, grew up in Los Angeles a passionate fan of the first “Star Wars” film and especially Princess Leia. “She was doing a bunch of things that women in movies didn’t usually do,” Ms. Hart said.
I guess I don't have proof that they really did it for the money, but the thinking seems to have been:

 1. Hire female SW fans
 2. They write strong female leads that remind them of their own nostolgia for Princess Leia
 3. Win another generation of young female SW fans
 4. ???
 5. Profit

I don't see this as a bad thing, and it's probably naive for me to presume that focusing on writing in strong female characters would have any drain at all on other important priorities like writing a good story that still feels like SW.
2017-12-31, 11:50 AM #275
Is the goal of eliminating discrimination against women best served by providing strong female role models to a female audience, or by providing strong female role models to a male audience?
2017-12-31, 11:52 AM #276
Let's ask the Gamergate mob on Reddit what they think of that question :P

Oh, these new movies have negative stereotypes in spades. TFA was all about an interracial couple running from a man with a burning cross. And in TLJ the first time we see an Asain women drive a vehicle she crashes into someone while trying to cut them off.

I don't know if you intended it but this is a pretty goddamn funny caricature, if you see what's really being caricatured.

I took his post to be a joke. A caricature would imply that at least one interpretation of something he wrote was meant seriously.
