Yahtzee wins again. Though someone should definitely have warned him that Halo 3 is a game you buy for (charitably) 10-20 hours of single player and 50-100 hours of multiplayer, because that's where all the replay value is.

After a solid week of Halo, I still like the game. But after years of PC-fps (this was my first week of 360/console shooters), I still have huge trouble aiming with the analog sticks. It's just so hard and frustrating. I make huge mistakes that simply wouldn't happen, even for an amateur with a mouse. It's just so ridiculous that you use your thumbs for everything, and the sticks are so touchy. When you want to turn around, it's way too slow. When you try to track someone or aim precisely with the sniper rifle, it's too fast. It's like I'm being punished not because I suck, but because this control scheme is just so inferior.

 :suicide:

Yeah, FPS' with a controller will never be the same as mouse. I will now introduce you to Phoenix's post denying that the control sticks are inferior:

Play it enough and you stop thinking about analog sticks entirely.

They are not inferior. You just aren't used to using them. It took time for you to learn to use a mouse properly. It takes time to learn to use analog sticks properly.

And yes Kirby, I still hold the belief that one of those ridiculously skilled MLG players with a controller could go head to head with a PC user with keyboard and mouse and fair pretty damn well.

Fair well, maybe.

Win? Absolutely, positively, without a doubt in my mind not.

You can get used to "sticks" but they literally, physically do not and cannot provide the same degree of control. The controls are more sluggish, the range of motion is limited (you can only spin so fast), the range of slow to fast is limited. It's harder on your hands. You have far more motor control in your whole hand than you do with only your thumb.

Hell, want a perfect example? On default config for Halo 3. Please attempt to jump while simultaneously rotating the camera in any direction.

You can't. Your thumb has to press than jump button. In a game where jumping is pretty important (moreso than say, CS:S), this is severely limiting.

Also, please attempt to move in any direction while using push to talk.

Or melee while turning.

Or switch weapons while turning.

phoenix, that last screenshot is awesome. What caused that explosion, and did you manage to survive?

I only just now found the zoom in button. Man, that's useful.

Just in case it's not obvious, I sniped that sniper in the head with the laser. Irony is fun.

I don't know what they did to the Needler, but I love it now. It's hard to get good screenshots of it in action though.

Not me. Friend of mine and one of his buddies riding brokeback. What caused it? Me and my teammate fired rockets at nearly the same time at the same place. That shot is from the moment of impact. All explosions have a huge flash for about 3 frames before it dies out and you actually see the explosion.

Chaz Ghostle, can you PM me the original of that first shot, with the spartan/covenant grav hammers? That's an awesome picture, and I would love to have as a desktop.

On the topic of console controllers vs. keyboard/mouse it is generally an accepted fact that the latter is superior with regards to speed. I say this personally prefering controllers. I read an article where Halo on a PC was played with controller vs. mouse with equal skill levels and the mouse players smoked the controller players.

A couple weeks ago I was thinking about how controllers could be improved and the idea I had was that maybe the outer most area of the right stick could be quicker to facilitate mouse-fast turn arounds. Whatever.

Messed around a bit with Halo multiplayer the last few nights. I generally suck at multiplayer FPS. I planned on getting in to Halo 2 and never did but I'm going to give it a better shot this time.

In single player I'm up to some aerial portion in which you fly some one-man marine craft for the first time. I'm not progressing very fast because it
s hard to play with a sub-2 year old running around. Although he loves to get his hand on the controller!

Didn't we used to have an XBox Live thread with everybody's gamertags? Maybe we should start another one.

I'm hating how many achievements they restricted to Ranked FFA. It annoys me. I'm forced to play a mode I don't really like, to attempt to unlock the last few armor permutations by luck. Because there's really no other way to land a two for one Spartan Laser kill otherwise. Or kill four people in four seconds when there's only 5 people in the game.

You can do what my lame friend did in TF2 and go into a game together for the sole purpose of unlocking achievements (ie have 4 friends bunch up and kill 'em all with grenades for an easy achievement). But that's lame and not really as much fun as managing to get that achievement against people who AREN'T helping you.

2007-10-06, 7:46 PM #264
A party of 2 or more players cannot join ranked Free For All, probably for reasons like that. You have to go in alone.

(I was pinned down behind a humvee and managed to pop off a couple shots in quick succesion by laying under it, they never knew where i was)

I wouldn't call playing a part of matchmaking I hate just to grab a few achievements I wouldn't otherwise care about if it weren't for the fact it unlocks armor I want fun. It's frustrating to no end. I don't feel happy or accomplished when I get one of those achievements. I feel relieved that I'm one step closer to not having to ever bother with it ever again.

That said, ranked FFA is full of people who ask if anyone is up for just grabbing the achievements in the lobby before every. single. game. If I ever manage to land in one where those people are actually up for that, I'm exploiting it.

I would actually consider buying a gamepad, if the aiming stick was replaced with a trackball. That would just be amazing. All the accuracy of a mouse with the convince of an A-pad for movement. I'm astonished that no one has made one yet.

a-pad? did you mean d-pad? or analog stick?

they don't use a trackball because 99.999% of people in the universe are not used to trackballs and would hate them terribly. also, gamepad sensors are way cheaper and less accurate than the kind of laser tracking you'd need in order to make a handheld trackball device that's subject to rapid motions durable enough. A trackball large enough to be comfortable to a human thumb would also never fit inside any existing controller.

Basically what I'm getting at is that no one has made one yet because it's not a good idea.

I actually only eat food that requires utensils when I am near the computer or anything else expensive, and rarely eat at the computer. I don't eat at all with other people's electronics.

But I know most other normal people have nasty greasy controllers (and guitars, sadly)
