X&Y is my least favorite Coldplay album. That said, I should point out that A Rush of Blood To The Head and Parachutes are my #1 and #2 albums of all-time respectively, and X&Y willl undoubtedly be one of my favourite albums released this year.

It's not a huge step forward from A Rush of Blood, and too many tracks (What If, X&Y, Square One) sound like they could have been on AROBTTH but just weren't good enough. Also too many songs are needlesly over-long which really drags the whole album out. Almost every track has a good 30 seconds of outro after the main part of the song ends.

X&Y does have its highlights. Fix You still gives me goosebumps, Speed of Sound is the best Coldplay single since Yellow, Twisted Logic sounds like Coldplay + Muse (= win), and The Message will soon be playing during the credit sequence at a movie cinema near you. X&Y is a very dense and layered album, there's a lot to take in.

I also think just about anything on X&Y will sound fantastic with a huge crowd singing along at a concert. It seems like that's what the majority of the album was written for, live performances for the masses. It's a sound that certainly works for the band, but then again I think it's almost a shame when you look back at the wonderful simplicity of Parachutes. Hopefully their next album will be a more healthy mix of the two.

Oh, and

Coldplay - Fix You

Whoops, totally forgot to respond.

A Rush Of Blood To The Head is also my favorite Coldplay album, but the fight between X&Y and Parachutes I'm still unsure about. Having finished listening to the whole album, I really really enjoyed X&Y. I enjoyed how they mixed a few different styles (Fix You, Talk, Twisted Logic), however I felt like the album as a whole was kind of....aimless, I guess. Like you said, some of the songs felt like they were meant for other albums, but wern't used and then just thrown into X&Y, and the arrangement of songs sometimes didn't seem to fit to me. Also, whenever I listen to it again, I tend to not listen to the album all the way through as a whole, jump to this song, then to this song, then back to another song, ect.

But some of the songs by themselves...
Fix You was amazingly beautiful.
The Muse-esqe Twisted Logic was great.
Swallowed In The Sea is one of my favorite songs on the album.
Speed Of Sound has an awesome sound.
I really like Talk. Alot.

So I guess overall, the flow of the album didn't feel right to me, but thats all getting a little technical, right? In the end I really enjoyed the album, it's also one of my favorite albums I got this year, and don't regret the purchase at all. Can't wait for their next album.

The only song on X&Y that I can't stop listening to is White Shadows. But I've never really listened to Coldplay's albums all the way through, it's usually one or two songs that stick out for me.... take that back, Parachutes was awesome, just havent listened to it in forever.

That song is so 1980s it scares me. Love the funky background beat.

Really agree with what you said about jumping around X&Y, BurrBoy, I havent listened to it as an album for a while either. But there are a bunch of really good individual songs on there. The only two tracks I almost always insist on listening to one after the other is White Shadows -> Fix You, but that's mostly for the way the organ outro on White Shadows links the songs together.
