JK models everywhere (lot 'o pics)

I think another issue at play is the fact that, as far as gameplay goes, the raildet is awful. It's projectiles are horribly slow and innacurate. Of course, all the projectiles in the game are terribly slow. Someone also mentioned it shooting three rails at once... isn't it's secondary fire a 'sticky' detonator? When does it shoot three rails at once?

That's why I made THIS DESIGN, which was accepted, and triggered Kirby to remodel his version, and Shred to remodel over Kirby's.

I still think your design is totally flawed.

I can only speak for myself; but I'm not giving him any flak because I just don't give a **** anymore. I don't care what the models look like. I just WANT THEM.

ALL OF THEM. IN A SINGLE GOB. NOW. It'd be nice if we got a nice player model version of 3po too. I always played MP as him. :)
Wikissassi sucks.

One of these days, I'm gunna draw you up a design that is exactly like DF's repeater.... just to shut you up. ;)

That's one of the first pics I ever saw of JK. It was in a preview article in Computer Gaming World. Along with other dev pics including an AT-ST in Nar Shadaa.

I agree with halucid on the design issues. I too would prefer remakes that are as accurate as possible, with liberties taken only where the lack of detail leaves design ambiguities (such as "what is that thing sticking out of the repeater"). However, seeing how Shred showcases fully textured, in-game models, I feel it's a waste of time to point out something he's obviously aware of.

In any case, though, I think the original 3-charge revolving design is a lot more interesting than Shred's barrel approach, but that's a matter of opinion.

Hey Shred, mind if I give texturing the repeater you've got? Or working from what you've got?

I thought it did, but I was wrong, sorry for the confusion. It shoots one rail at a time. And yes, secondary fire is a sticky rail.

It can't shoot three if there's only one rail, heh.

I just thought that the 'ammochamber' was the actual projectile, that's how. I assumed it was launching the entire thing because the ammo-pickups look like they're grouped together like the 'ammochamber'. Only it's not the same colour. Mesa stupid. Let's just forget it. lol

If I may offer my two cents, I like the new raildet model far more than the original. The design seems to me to capture the essence of the original, but it makes more sense from a technical perspective(yes, I'm the sort of person who thinks of things like that, even though it's not really supposed to make sense :p).
2006-03-30, 6:07 PM #92
I know I'm gunna sound like I complete jerk for mentioning it, so I prolly should just keep my mouth shut.... but the whole thing with this gun "making so much sense from a technical perspective" is really bothering me for 2 reasons. One, it STILL can't hold 30 dets.... 14 maybe. Two, neither of the gun holes align properly to the rotating ammo reel.

Which is all fine. These are Star Wars guns. They don't have to make sense. In fact, I prefer them not to. But saying you like the guns because they do make sense is just plain silly.

I was just about to edit my post, but here's a new one:

The more I look at the 'version 1' rail det from the early screens of JK, the more I like that more than anything else. :(

Damn you Hal, you've hammered a wedge between me and my insane love for Shred's awesome work. :p

NO WAY!!!
are you serious?
rail det is such a strategically ideal weapon
when your running you go shoot secondary fire on the wall next to you and the person behind you if its a tight corridor will lose so much health.

its also a long distance time bomb which i think is incredible, you cant throw a thermal detonator into window 50m away thats directly horizontal do you, but you can with the rail det.

i think its slow ness is a cool thing, its a big missile but you dodge it,
if you are using force speed you can out run the things
its so matrix like.

and if you want fast firing guns, use the repeater.
i dont get how the lec rail detonator doesnt make sense...it make sense to me
you shoot the chamber revolves then it shoots the next detonator down the rail,
it looks awesome when it reloads and i love the sounds.
please oh please keep it slim and to the original design i think it is awesome.

I learned something new today.

3do's can have a pivot offset! Which means his wrist can rotate on the offset, while the saber blade comes out the "real" pivot. No more saber from the wrist :D

Sweeeet Shred. I like the new conc... definately an improvement, although I still like S51's conc better (has more of that authentic DF feel, which I always favored, especially if he gets the textures right).

2006-03-30, 11:47 PM #102
I hope that information you found out about pivot offsets is going into the Wiki on the Hub somewhere, Shred.

I'm going to side with those who would prefer the models look more like the originals. However, some of those people are missing an important point. This is Shred's graphical update, and if he does want to model a weapon with significant differences to the original, so what? If you don't like the end-result, don't use it. The fact it is merely a graphical update means you can take it or leave it. I for one won't be leaving it, even if I would prefer a more traditional rail det.

Also, regarding the player models, I noticed in the beta that the red/green/purple... multiplayer models were all the same design, with the different colours. In the original, those models actually had different symbols on the chest. I assume these were Aurubeshean (sp?) characters. I also didn't think they looked great with such a black suit. The originals were more grey, and looked better I thought. The new ones look too... perfect? Similar to when in racing games you have massively shiny cars that never get dirty.

While we're on the team skins, the Gold (and possibly others) have 'crazy' colored pixels around the symbols on the suit.

I love the new repeater. Much truer to DF than JK's was.

JK's tried to stick to DF. What few people bother to notice is that JK's guns are much lower res then DF's, by virtue of being full 3d models while DF had nice slick sprites.
Wikissassi sucks.

I understand the poly limitations JK modelers had to deal with in 1997. I'm talking more about the profile the weapon takes up from the player's point of view. JK's repeater had a vastly different feel to it than DF's repeater.

Why do the spheres on the tips of the bow look like compressed, flat ovals instead of spheres?

I used the JA model as reference, and thats where the squashed spheres and the string come from. I changed them back to real spheres anyway, didn't like it that way.

I dunno about the string. Should I leave it? I dunno what the bow is for anyway, if not firing arrows :em321:

The string's not supposed to be there... that's just a stupid Raven idea. Similar to the raildet, the bowcaster uses magnetic acceleration to fling plasma coated bolts of boom. The orbs create the polarization needed for the acceleration.

[EDIT] ...and is it just me, or is this entire thread 50% on-subject stuff, and 50% "You're an idiot because I know more about guns than you" banter? It's become a little annoying to try to find posts on this thread that are relevant to the topic.

awesome bowcaster,
i was just checking return of the jedi
it was really hard to get a clear shot of the bowcaster
i could make out some kind of string but it just wasnt clear enough
and if we are going to follow the movie for accuracy then the bolt is actually red despite it being green in jk.

i personally prefer the green
just thought i would mention that.
