Playing My Part in The Revenge of the Sith

Today was a dream come true. Sounds corny, I know. But it was. A dream come true.

I grew up with Star Wars… a young classical musician suddenly introduced to a different world: a world where orchestras played not with feeling, but for feeling. That was the function of film music, and I found it in Star Wars. So I decided when I was still a child that I would be a film composer – and I’m on my way – but I sing too, and one of the choirs I sing for is the London Voices. I did the Lord of the Rings Trilogy with them, and that was stunning. But this…this was a different world. This was John Williams.

Usually, film conductors will have the choir and orchestra on different days – it's complicated to get it together, in such a quick time (ie. sight-reading), and the balancing of their respective volumes can get difficult. But Williams prefers them together – so he gets them that way. It was just unbelievable: the first track, titled ‘Lament’ (we didn’t know what for) was the most intense expression of feeling. It was thickly textured, and wildly passionate. And this man is 73. He’s written for Indy, and E.T. and Close Encounters and Schindler's, and he’s got between 2 and 3 hours of music to produce for this film alone, and still the music is like nothing else. It was beautiful, and made me turn to a fellow singer with, “If Williams doesn’t win an Oscar for this film, I’ll be surprised”.

We went on, to ‘The Birth of the Twins’. How exciting can it get for a Star Wars and Star Wars Music afficionado? I turned round to see the screen behind us, and I could see the births intercut with the building of…him. The birth of Vader, clearly, being paralleled with the birth of Luke and Leia. As babies are handed to people, in another location ‘the helmet’ descends onto Anakin’s broken face, to just one chord (minor of course) which builds from p to a deafening fff and back down again. Later I cut into the control booth with some of the orchestra, and listen with fascinated enjoyment as Lucas (sitting by me) begins to impersonate Vader’s breathing, much to the amusement of all. “We’ve got to get the breathing to work with the music there, John”, says George.

Next: “The Death of Padme”. A re-placement of an earlier choral track from the new extant Episodes. The visuals look glorious.

Now its lunch, and the choir are officially finished. But I make a decision. I’m not going to go – not now. After all these years? So I sneak in after lunch, and sit at the side of the orchestra. It’s a risk (I could get thrown out), but I take it – it's too important. It’s just me, the LSO, John Williams and an unfinished Star Wars III on the big screen. We’ve an extraordinary-looking space battle to get through, which rocks like nothing else (“Cool”, proclaims Lucas after one extra-vigorous take, a cross between the Hoth Ice Battle and the end of the Episode IV fighter-battle music), and then a quiet scene between Palpatine and the falling Anakin (“I love this scene,” says Williams. “The old guy’s great”). The former contains a striking brass fanfare as ships land and troops mass (we’ve heard it in Episode I), and Williams takes it separate to the rest of the cue, so he can sound-mix it more carefully. By contrast, the latter scene contains a moment for a solo cello trio, which is played gloriously by three members of the LSO.

This score feels immediately more emotionally full, dense, than the scores for Episodes I and II. And that feels somehow right – there’s so much more going on, so much more of importance to the Star Wars of IV, V and VI in this one. I get the feeling this score is going to be more interesting than I and II, more engaging – and the film too.

Anthony Daniels and Frank Oz suddenly appear, dropping in for a quick ogle at the process. Lucas signs my music. Williams extends a hand for me to shake – “Good luck in your own work, Andrew,” he says generously. How much better can it get?

And the best news? London Voices are back for another day next Tuesday…

-- Andrew Hewitt

The intercutting between the birth of the twins and the birth of suited Vader will be great imagery.

EPISODE III TERNIAN REPORT: PADME'S STORY :: I Am No Longer Frightened, Senator...

Febuary 8 2005

PADME'S STORY :: Part 4 Of 5

"No. He will not be trained." Master Windu, Episode I

A sleek silver speeder approaches the side of Amidala's veranda. Senator Amidala steps out and is greeted by her two handmaidens. Also waiting for her is Anakin. He is on his way to an evening out at the Coruscant Opera House.

He is celebrating an event with his friend, Chancellor Palpatine.

Anakin tells Padme that he has been appointed to the Jedi Council. Padme congratulates him, but Anakin is not that happy. He's pissed off because it's merely a political gesture and he was only accepted as representative, not as Master.

The conversation soon turns political.

Anakin isn't quite sure if the Republic is something worth defending any longer. He is absolutely sure that without Palpatine things would have been even worse. Padme, on the other hand starts to talk like a Separatist: she's not sure who the bad guys are, and even thinks there are some within the Republic itself that are there to destroy it.

Anakin is dejected, tired and deadly worried about Padme's life - and in this heavy atmosphere they part.

EPISODE III TERNIAN REPORT: PADME'S STORY :: Offer Rejected

Febuary 8 2005

PADME'S STORY :: Part 5 Of 6

"I am losing faith in the Senate's readiness, or even ability, to rein him in." Senator Amidala, Revenge of the Sith.

As the Chancellor tightens his grip over the galaxy, Amidala takes the Petition of Two Thousand to the Chancellor.

However, it is quite a showdown. Standing beside Palpatine at the meeting is his loyal representative - Anakin Skywalker. Anakin has been asked specifically to appear at this meeting - a new intmidating figure against the leader of the Delegation of Two Thousand.

The Chancellor rejects the petition offered, infurating Amidala, who storms out of the meeting.

Soon, Order 66 is issued.

As an Empire is enthusiastically welcomed by the Senate ( to the horror of Senator Amidala and Senator Binks), Vader begins his massacre on Mustafar, and Obi-Wan and Yoda survey the remains of the once mighty Jedi Temple.

For those wondering about Order 66, it's the command issued to all the clone armies to turn again their Jedi leaders .

Every time I see pictures of Kenobi, I'm just amazed at how much they make him resemble Sir Alec Guiness.

Hayden Christiansen's (sp?) transformation into Vader looks good, too. The gloved hand has a very "Darth"-ish look to it, in my opinion.

I see these pictures of Hayden and I can't connect him to that whiny plank of wood from AotC at all. Let's hope he manages to deliver this time. I enjoyed his performance in Shattered Glass (even though the character did carry more than a few of the whiny traits of AotC Anakin) so I'm sure he can do it.

Also, the dialogue is fantastic, a Star Wars rarity. I hope it's received the acting and direction it deserves. Didn't I read somewhere that George got in some sort of expert to clean the dialogue up this time?

EPISODE III SPOILERIFFIC REPORT: Dooku Duel

Spoileriffic's 1206-word Report on the entire Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi versus Count Dooku duel scene from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

The ongoing space battle over Coruscant is visible outside the massive windows of the General's Quarters on board the Federation Cruiser. The multi-leveled room is cold and metallic, featuring familiar flower-shaped control consoles on either side of the room. Palpatine can be seen, cuffed to a large (and also familiar) chair, across the room. The sound of the large entry doors are heard and our heroes Obi-Wan and Anakin step in, looking over the room from the small balcony. The two proceed down one of the sets of stairs on either side of the balcony and walk to the kidnapped Chancellor. There doesn't seem to be any sign of the rumored General Grievous... maybe this won't be so hard after all.

Just as the two Jedi reach Palpatine, a concerned look comes over him, and with a nod, he simply says, "Dooku". Anakin and Obi-Wan turn to see Count Dooku step through the entry doors with a SuperBattleDroid at each side. He casually walks forward to the railing and in a sudden and surprising acrobatic feat he springs forward, flipping and twisting over the railing, and sticks a solid landing on the floor below. Rising from his crouched position he unclips his curved lightsaber from his belt, but does not ignite it. The two droids stand guard at the doorway above.

Dooku strides across the room confidently and says, "Your swords please, gentlemen. We don't want to make a mess of things in front of the Chancellor." The two Jedi are not about to underestimate the Count again. They immediately begin shedding their robes in preparation for battle. They walk forward to meet Dooku in the middle of the room. "This time we'll take him together." says Obi-Wan to his former apprentice. Anakin replies, "I was just about to say the same thing." as they come to a stop, standing face to face with Dooku once again.

"You won't get away this time, Dooku." states Obi-Wan as he ignites his lightsaber. Anakin does the same. Dooku holds his saber out at his side and switches it on as well. "Do not assume that just because there are two of you, that you have the advantage." warns Dooku. Palpatine looks on anxiously.

Within moments the duel has begun and the three fighters engage in a flurry of attacks and spins. Dooku manages to keep both Jedi at bay with some extravagant swordplay. After a few seconds the fighting breaks and Dooku steps away from the Jedi, backing toward the entrance side of the room. Anakin and Obi-Wan follow cautiously and together they attack again. This part of the room is more open and the three now fight with large lunges and traverse much more distance. Acting on a quick moment of weakness, Dooku thrusts out his open palm at Obi-Wan, and sends the Jedi flying backward with the Force. Anakin does not hesitate to continue his attack on the Sith Lord who cost him his arm 3 years ago. Anakin fights Dooku with much skill and confidence. Clearly, he has grown much more powerful since their last encounter. Anakin forces Dooku backward, and up the nearest set of stairs to the raised balcony.

Obi-Wan gets back to his feet and heads for the other set of stairs. The two SuperBattleDroids on the balcony now open fire on Obi-Wan, who blocks and deflects the blaster shots as he proceeds up the stairs. He ricochets one blaster bolt back at the farthest droid, which strikes the droid's chest and takes him out. The other droid continues shooting and begins walking down the stairs. Obi-Wan swiftly hacks the SuperBattleDroid in half as he passes it to reach the top of the stairs. He rejoins the action and the duel becomes two-on-one again.

Dooku is determined to seperate his opponents so that he can handle them each separately. Dooku delivers a strong kick to Anakin, which sends him tumbling back. Dooku then uses the Force to attack Obi-Wan once again. This time he holds Obi-Wan in place, and levitates him several feet up. Then, in a quick motion, he sends Obi-Wan flying across the room, and into a balcony on a far wall. After smashing into the balcony's railing, Obi-Wan drops to the floor, unconscious. Dooku intends to finish the job and as he holds out his hand, he uses the Force to pry that balcony from the wall, allowing it to fall onto Obi-Wan. The balcony crashes down, but only part of it lands on Obi-Wan's leg.

Anakin attacks Dooku with even more fury. They fight their way back down the stairs to the floor below. As they grind their sabers against each other, Dooku comments that he senses the dark side in Skywalker: Anger, aggression... "But you do not use it." he says. They clash swords again and fight their way back closer to Palpatine, who watches intently. Dooku and Anakin do battle with all they've got, and in a very quick motion, the victor is revealed.

Anakin hits down Dooku's arms with his lightsaber hilt and pulls Dooku's saber out of his hands in the moment of confusion. Simultaneously he slices his blade through both of Dooku's wrists. Dooku reacts with a shocked expression, and the triumphant Anakin stands tall with a lightsaber in each hand. Dooku looks at his cut-off forearms and drops to his knees. Anakin steps forward and lowers the lightsaber blades in a scissor-like fashion to Dooku's neck.

Dooku looks up at Anakin and for the first time we see fear in his eyes. Anakin is now hesitating, realizing that killing Dooku is unnecessary since he can now be easily arrested. In a commanding tone, Palpatine says to finish him. Breaking character, Dooku turns to Palpatine with a look of suprise and says, "What?! You promised me amnesty..." This only seems to confuse Anakin. Palpatine again insists that Anakin finish the job. "I know I shouldn't..." Anakin says to himself. But after a few more of Palpatine's words, Anakin looks down at the defenseless Sith Lord and decides it's time to put an end to him for good. Anakin throws his arms to the sides, causing each lightsaber blade to slice through Dooku's neck, decapitating him. Anakin watches as Dooku's head tumbles off of his torso, which promptly collapses to the ground.

Anakin helps palpatine out of his restraints. As Palpatine rubs his chafed wrists and stands, he reassures Anakin, "He was too dangerous to be left alive." Anakin expresses some remorse at what he's done, but Palpatine reminds him that this is not the first time he's done something like this. "Remember what you told me?" Palpatine says, "About your mother and the Sand people?" Anakin does not continue the conversation as he rushes to his fallen friend Obi-Wan. Anakin pulls him from the balcony and inspects him. Palpatine walks past them in a bit of a rush and heads up the stairs toward the doorway.

Anakin reports that Obi-Wan doesn't appear severely hurt. Palpatine turns and looks down from the balcony. "Leave him." he says. Anakin looks up as if to demand an explanation. Palpatine says that they must go quickly, and taking Obi-Wan would only slow them down. Anakin states that he will not leave Obi-Wan behind... "His fate will be our own."

I'm lovin' that whole scene. I was hoping there would be some sort of confrontation between Dooku and Palpidious .
Frightening the very small and very old since 1952.

EPISODE III TIDBIT REPORT: Unkindest Cut of All

February 15 2005

Part of the original final montage was of Yoda arriving on Dagobah.

The Jedi Master was to have been seen going into exile after the fall of the Jedi, but Lucas has decided that the film, with brief finales on Naboo, aboard a Star Destroyer, and on Tatooine has too many endings.

Dagobah has now been cut.

Well at least it's not gonna end like Return of the King with 5 different endings.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.
2005-02-15, 3:57 PM #232
yeah... but i would rather have had naboo or tatooine cut instead of dagobah. actually i would have gone with naboo. i mean who is gonna go back there? jimmy smitt's character is the only one who i can think of, and he's not even that big of a deal(if he even lives through to the end, and unless padme dies at the very end at naboo... i dunno. i would rather see obi wan go back to tatooine AND yoda go to dagobah. my favorite jedi of all the movies should be together like that.

but damn. if there's one thing lucas has done right in the OT and all preqels, it's obi-wan. and thank god for that.
2005-02-15, 5:37 PM #233
Obi-Wan seems to have a way of getting his butt kicked. It's rather funny, it's only when it gets really personal does he kick butt. In TPM he got his butt kicked by Darth Maul until he killed him. In AotC he got his butt kicked by Dooku but managed to kick Fett's butt. In this movie he gets his butt kicked by Dooku, but manages to somehow defeat Anakin?
I can't think of anything to put here right now.
2005-02-15, 6:38 PM #234
and in ANH he totally kicked that guy at the bar's butt and then just gets his *** whooped by vader. but he did it on purpose.

EPISODE III TERNIAN REPORT: Trap, Bargain, Rebellion

February 16 2005

"Fool! Do you think the fear you feel is mine?" Darth Sidious, Revenge of the Sith.

After Vader (formerly Anakin Skywalker) destroys the Jedi Temple, he heads to the apartment of his wife, Padme.

Vader clearly states that he has put down a Jedi Rebellion and that Mace Windu and other Masters tried to assassinate Palpatine. He admits that he considers Obi-Wan dead.

He tries to convince Padme that the Jedi are traitors and have to be "dealt with." However, Vader tells Padme that she is safe as long as she keeps away from the rebellious Senators.

Padme asks how she is safe.

Vader reveals that she is safe because she is with him. He discussed it with Palpatine who has granted her protection as long as she stays out of the Delegation of Two Thousand.

Padme is surprised that Palpatine knows of the marriage.

Vader reveals that Palpatine has always known. He was able to find out through friends in Theed's clergy.

Vader states "I need to go to Mustafar to finally end this war."

His last goodbye is "I love you, wait for me..."

It's all overwhelming for Padme but her love for him blinds her judgement...
