Well, I beat it last night. Somewhere around 20 hours. Grunt died, as did Mordin. Did anybody else think Legion's loyalty was ridiculously easy when you have him and Tali?
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

Well they are both specialized against geth, so it makes sense.

I tried using the flamethrower once but all it does is get you killed cause everything just shoots the crap out of you while you run around like an idiot trying to get into range of anything with it.

Plus, even worse, the flamethrower doesn't have the range necessary to even hit many of the bosses, like the reactor on the IFF mission.

Can you tell I was highly disappointed by the flamethrower? >.>

To be fully honest, I only used the flamethrower for one mission to count towards the "kill people with 5 different heavy weapons" achievement. It just happened to be the side mission where you have to stop the war mechs from destroying the crates, and I found it fairly effective. But I suppose when enemies are more concerned with your teammates anything you do will look more effective! After that was done it was Blackstorm all the way. Nothing else felt like it caused the same amount of damage and destruction.

I quite enjoyed that one, just for the fun of planning out the best cover tactics for when you activated the Geth around the hubs.

I just dug up my ME1 Cd and started playing for comparison.

While ME2 is a very good game I like ME1 much more. It's an RPG wile the second one looses a lot of it and the gameplay seems like more of a shooter type game. I have no idea why they dropped the level up system from the first game. Also the skills we can develop in in ME2 are very limited.
2010-02-08, 7:49 AM #205
Everything from the first level system is still there, you just don't get to control most of it... Which I agree, it sucks.

I think they tried to go more mainstream this time, hence the clips, less skill control, and the horrible 'when you get shot just hide and you'll be okay!' tactic.

Well I personally don't mind the leveling system, and actually enjoyed that your powers evolved when you maxed one out. I'm thrilled that they did away with talent points based shooting which never works well, not for Mass Effect, nor for Fallout 3. It can get annoying however when you have to wait several levels to accumulate your points before spending them.

I also enjoyed that you got to pick a key bonus talent from your companion's loyalty list. Barrier or Reavea

One thing i really REALLY don't like are ammunition powers (incendiary, cryo, shredder, armor-piercing, warp, etc.) That portion just plain sucks and I feel they could approached this differently.

Also, I agree that I'm not a fan of the Gears of War "Hide and heal up" system, and would opt for a return to the old system for ME3. I doubt they will go back though.

it wasn't so bad that you were supposed to hide and heal up its that you HAD TO for every situation or you were dead.

I'm not sure I understand.

Having to hide to regen health is fine, but then having to do it isn't?

I don't get what you mean by every situation.

Playing my second character now, and I'm just wondering: does anyone else wish there was a way to vault low obstacles without going into combat mode? I know it's a small issue, but then it should probably be a small fix as well. It's especially annoying in purely exploration areas like the MSV Estevanico.
2010-02-08, 9:36 AM #210
Yea, that and being able to melee crates without combat mode would be good.

jep, what i mean is that the mechanic of going to cover to regen is an alright, but having to do that every single encounter gets kind of stale and boring. the fact that staying out of cover and trying to shoot things is almost guaranteed death is lame

Oh well its just following the same genre as Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas. I personally like it, although as a Vanguard, I gotta saw I wasn't in cover all that often since I was zooming all over the place with charge.

I just hate it because it makese no sense. Sure, med packs, first aid, food, ect... never made sense either... but come on! Do they expect us to believe every new game hero either has nano-machines or genetic healing abilities?

It makes perfect sense. It makes games easier, and thus more accessible, that's why it makes sense.

Doesn't make anymore sense that a character will get hit by 20 rounds and pop a med and be all the better.

These are game mechanics, don't try to make sense of it and you'll at least be able to ignore it.

In this case though its at least mentioned once or twice that your suit has healing abilities.

Started a new run on Hardcore this weekend with a Sentinel. This son of a ***** is nigh destructible. I got to horizon and died only twice, and that was during the first Husk/Scion onslaught when you reach the Tower controls. I just wasn't prepared to face these guys off, expecially since Husks have armor on hardcore. I think the flamethrower will come in handy against these guys..

With that said, being on vacation next week, there is a good chance I'll be putting this guy on the backburner and starting the game over with my Vanguard on Insanity.

Shepard kung fu kicks a krogan too, if you follow the Paragon Charm option (Let us be your "muscle") for the Patriarch quest on Omega.

I beat the 2nd...tried playing the first one again as a biotic. I couldn't stand it. There's a massive difference in cooldown times on biotic powers between 1 and 2.
2010-02-09, 6:11 AM #222
I laughed pretty hard when he headbutts the krogan. Since that's their way of displaying dominance.

You know, I find its funny, I just discovered there is a character in Lost that's called Jack Shepard, and also looks kinda similar to Mark Vanderloo. Funny coincidence!

I've been watching a ton of awesome videos of Vanguards playing on Insanity, and its really making me want to play one again on that difficulty. Considering I'm on vacation next, I might shelf my sentinel for now and switch see if I can't challenge myself a little next week.

Fun Vanguard movies:

I don't really like the rush attack... seems like he just goes right through anything until he hits his target.

Thats the point, its like a mini mass relay generated by his biotic implants. I think its awesome and quite a thrill to use. It also makes the class extremely mobile and active while playing, which is quite a blessing considering how you end up parking behind crates on pretty much every other class.

On my soldier, I spent most of my time walking about killing bad guys with my assault rifle. I can take down a whole health bar (barrier or shield or armor or health) in one trigger pull (3-round burst). The only things I actually have to take cover from are the big scary mechs (that mini-nuke explode when you shoot off their head) or the soldiers with rockets.
2010-02-09, 10:29 AM #230
I prefer to snipe everything dead in one shot from cover while not in the least bit in danger. Goes fast, and never fails :D

Near the end of the game I was even one-shotting harbringers.

I chose the sniper rifle as my advanced weapon training (as a Sentinel) because I thought it'd give me an extra dimension and it was the only weapon I didn't use on my previous character (Vanguard, chose the assault rifle). Definitely enjoyed the extra stopping power against Scions.

Also ordered a copy of Mass Effect for the 360 so I can get a character ready to run through the whole story with in preparation for ME3. This will be the third copy of ME I've owned for two different platforms.

I hate how you can head-shot a harbringer with the Widow, and take it out with one shot. But those stupid Engineers who have full armor/shield take at least two shots.

So much for the collectors being more advanced.

Hell, thats not just a collector, its a reaper-possessed one.

Like you said, its a bit ridiculous. Wierd balancing is one of this games issues.

Does anyone else REALLY like Zaeed? His style (run into danger like a fool) and abilities really compliment my Shepard. I think he and Jack complete my unit. I stay back and pick off the strong ones, they run in and blast the goons.

it depends on what class your shepard is. infiltrators need a meat shield and a biotic. sentinels need at least one strong rifleman and for lulztastic biotic fun someone with pull. vanguards need a tech and another biotic.

those are the 3 ive played. dunno bout the others

I was an infiltrator, and I used Garrus and Drell-dude whom I forget his name constantly. Neither were particularly meatsheilds, but I didn't mind. I hate biotics because they'd ruin my sniper shots with their silly enemy aerial acrobatics.
2010-02-09, 2:37 PM #239
I found that useful, though not as much as ME1 (Lol Krogan flying 100 meters). Simply disables them for a couple seconds.
2010-02-09, 4:07 PM #240
Ugh, the Krogan in ME1 were ridiculous. Krogan strength + lack of self preservation AI = Cheap deaths.
