FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany

Any coach worth anything will tell you that defense is what wins games in the long run. There's a reason the saying is "Offense wins games, defense wins championships", not the other way around.

I agree, Ecuador beating Poland was a shock. I'm pumped about England vs. Paraguay tomorrow! :D

Well, at least that gives Germany a chance to get into the next round. But they should improve their defense. But IMHO it's better to have a strong offense and a weaker defense than vice-versa. We tried that a few years ago and it didn't make us look good.

i thought that ecuador vs poland had a lot more interesting football compared to germany vs costa rica.

COME ON ENGLAND

I had to miss Ecuador vs Poland.

Germany's offense was alright, but their team as a whole was very disorganized. The Germans are traditionally known for their iron defense. Perhaps this time around it's not that strong. But you know, the Germans, just like the Dutch and the English, always grow better during the course of the tourney.

England - Paraguay is bound to be good. I'll bet the English want a bloody revenge for that dirty game they played in Mexico '86. I'm expecting a very tough game with lots of red and yellow cards. ;) hehe

1-0 to england after 2 minutes, the paraguay striker has the best name ever, Roque Santa Cruz.

Been a pretty entertaining game so far, but all England. They should get at least 1 or 2 more.

i dunno, i'm starting to fear a draw at this stage....

its got 1-1 written all over it.
2006-06-10, 7:52 AM #48
1-0, that was a really crap game.

if we dont improve then we're not going very far.
2006-06-10, 8:00 AM #49
Exactly. It was pitiful. England really pisses me off the way they settle for a 1-0 win in so many games, instead of pushing offense. Every world cup they do the same stupid thing, keep passing the ball back, again, and again, and again. And when they do take it forward, they do long volleys, where the other team (in this case Paraguay) almost always gains possession. It was really quite bad, England doesn't stand a chance a gainst a stronger side if this is the way they're going to play.

How many nations/teams are playing?
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

My thoughts exactly. We didn't even score the goal.

Poland vs. Ecuador: Poland didn't once look like they deserved to win that game. Ecuador at least looked like they had some cohesive attacking play.

I'm really surprised that Sweden hasn't taken advatage of being up a man on Trinidad and Tobago. If T&T comes out of this one with a draw, that will be qutie an upset.

0-0. Thats a great result for england, if we can beat T&T i'll be happy with a draw against Sweden.

England still playing on the counterattack? Some things never change... haha :P

I'd blame Sven as much as any of the players, what the hell was up with those subs? He got 1 - 0 and then just took out anyone that would have half a chance of scoring. Oh well, one more win and we're through at least. Wonderful result for T&T.

the ref in the England game was just funny...surely he was just out to have a laugh than actually referee the game properly, he gave Crouch a yellow for jumping and Gerard a yellow when he never even touched the bugger, ref = greasy haired (insert rude word)

People are all moaning about the display but overall it wasn't too bad, from what I've heard of Paraguay they've done very well in the south American league, beating Argentina and holding Brazil to a draw. Although the game wasn't pretty in the second half and Sven really needs to sort out his subs, I'll take the 1-0 win, thank-you-very-much :D
People of our generation should not be subjected to mornings.

I logged onto ESPN.com to check the Netherlands game time because I wanted to watch it, and saw one of the most unfortunate headlines I've seen:

As spe said, England played rather poorly- but hey, at least we won. I was impressed that T&T managed to draw with Sweden, though.

Yeah, Hislop was incredible against Sweden. T&T would've been thrashed if he hadn't made some of the saves he did.

Stupid Finland. :(
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

First half:

Netherlands 1 - Serbia M. 0

Beautiful goal by Robben. :D

Those Serbs are dangerous though! Let's see what the second half will bring...

Good God. Holland team tactic: Blind the opposition. No danger of them being run over on a dark night, huh?

Anyway, as much as I hate Robben...I will (begrudgingly) say it was a good goal. Serbia & Montenegro seem to be playing much better in the second half, however.
2006-06-11, 7:54 AM #69
Yeah, the second half was definitely tough... not an easy victory.

Final score: 1-0

that was an enjoyable game.

better than most the openers of the group stages.
2006-06-11, 8:00 AM #71
Even though the score was the same as the England game, I have to say that Holland played much better, both in terms of speed and precision. There were also cards and fouls flying around like nobody's business! ;)

6 more points for my office Fantasy Football team! Clean sheet for the Dutch!

Mexico just beat Iran 3-1, scoring 2 goals in the last 20 minutes. Some pretty nice stuff, but I had the T.V. on and left, so sadly I missed the two goals.

Is anyone expecting Portugal to murder Angola! :P

I saw most of the Netherlands game and I missed the Mexico game. :( Robben had a really great first half.

I'll definately be watching the Portugal game here in 20 minutes or so.

Iran collapsed in the second half, very nice goals from Mexico.

Well, I can't say that I'm impressed with Portugal's performance after the first 5 minutes, though they had some good moments. The header bouncing off the crossbar was just unlucky. At least they won.
