FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany
2006-06-11, 2:52 PM #81
I thought Angola played a pretty good game. I was amazed that Portugal only managed to net 1 goal in all that time. There have been a lot of 1-0 games starting off, which makes me feel a little bit better about England's performance.

The amount of goals really doesn't mean that much. 1-0 looks meager, but if it's against an incredibly strong team, it's very good. Many matches are decided by 1-0 wins. It's not new to this event.

I mean this is a world cup event, you know. 5-0 walkovers and such are extremely rare. Even Angola has a number of players that play in European Top Leagues.

So don't count the English out already. ;) They always grow better during the tourney. (Well, mostly)

yeah but a hefty GD is always nice

You see a lot of 1-0 games because the World Cup brings out conservative play. Get the lead then try to hold on to it, not give up the counter attack, etc. I don't really like that style of play. Control the ball, control the middle of the field and attack, and the opposing team can't mount a good attack themselves.

Though Portugal walked away with the 1-0 victory, I stick to my point; Angola fricking WON that match.

Group stage matches are always boring. The real action starts at extra time and penalty shootouts in the final 16.

Penalty shootouts? I don't think so. Those are the ugliest and most lame way to solve a tied game. :o

Surely you're not telling me that you prefer boring penalty goals to well built up attacks in the field? :P

While good outfield play is great to watch, penalty shoot outs have always been some of the most tense moments in football. I'll never forget Liverpool and AC Milan in the Champions League last year :o
2006-06-12, 5:44 AM #91
Please, no penalty shootouts. For some reason, The Netherlands always ****s them up. :psyduck:
2006-06-12, 5:44 AM #92
Penalty shoot-outs are very tense just by their nature. Hell Australia got into the finals through a penalty shoot-out.

Really pumped for the game starting in just a few minutes :D

Australia just went 1 down on a goal that was, arguably, a foul on Schwarzer.
2006-06-12, 6:49 AM #95
'Arguably'??! What a ****ing joke... I've seen chickens that were less of a foul than that!!

Bah. Not ****ing happy. Should be 0-0!

Oh well, hopefully the Aussies have 2 in them in the second half. With Viduka looking as good as he is an Cahil coming off the bench... never know...

I say 'arguably' because their seems to be a bit of contention from anyone who isn't Australian :P Personally I think it should've been disallowed. The commentators were saying how Viduka is a big lad, but...if a hundred-odd pounds of Japanese football player hits you square on, you're going to be knocked over.

no foul at all, you need a bit of rough or it just aint fun.

World Cup. Yes.
The matches aren't as spectacular in comparison to tournaments like the Champions League. Besides the world cup is renowned for it's penalty shootouts.

As for the current match ... we're (aus) doomed.

On a side note, at the end of this tournie half the participants are going to be cast into B movies (they make a artform of falling to the ground in agony).

EQUALIZER!!!!

GO WEST!

I love the fact they play that after every game :)
2006-06-12, 7:53 AM #110
Absolutely gutting for the Japanese. But then, they should've had the game won a long time ago. Saying that, however, Cahill was lucky not to concede a penalty; that would've changed the outcome drastically.
2006-06-12, 7:56 AM #111
Now I have to sit here on my hands until the U.S. game. :o

Hell yeah. I was expecting him to start Cahill and bring Kewell off the bench, but he got it right. Bringing Aloisi on worked well too, if only to seal the deal. Some of the defensive choices were interesting but hey we won so who bloody cares?

Yeah, don't underestimate Hiddink. He coached South-Korea to the semifinals four years ago, which was generally considered as an impossible feat. (They'd never gotten past the 1st round before) The Aussies might get far this time.

[Edit: I just read somewhere that the Australians have NEVER won a world cup match BEFORE!]

Man, the US conceded a goal too easily and too early.

They mentioned that during the game before. Never won a game, and never scored a goal either. The whole team was made up of amateurs and semi-pros back then, apparently.
2006-06-12, 9:20 AM #119
The US better win..

I'd hate for the players to have reports of the IRS suddenly having to do a severe audit on all the players.

My goodness. Czech Republic is winning 2-0 now. I don't think I can take much more of this.
