Reminds me.. The Dutch commentary was all about how well the USA played after the shot that hit the post. Then the Czech dude scored and he was all like "wtf just happened??//"
2006-06-12, 10:15 AM #126
USA arent really getting much of a look-in in this game, but to be fair the czechs are playing really really good football.

[edit]cant wait to see em play italy[/edit]
2006-06-12, 10:30 AM #127
What the hell are the us doing? i saw the possesion shortly after the first goal, USA 65% - 35% CZE, how do you have that much possesion and not be winning???
2006-06-12, 10:32 AM #128
because the czech defence is organised like a friggin machine, its near perfect.
2006-06-12, 10:33 AM #129
By not having the ball in the attacking third.

Another one for the Czechs. This is a disaster.

yea but that rosicky bloke is phenomenal, that move he just made was the best in the tournament so far if you ask me.
2006-06-12, 10:36 AM #131
The Czechs are much faster. They seem to improvise much more, where the US try to build up a good tactic to get to the goal. The Czechs just run forward.

Disclaimer: I've only seen ~15 minutes of the game and I'm far from an expert on football.
Sorry for the lousy German

The US don't play good teams often enough. The reason they're ranked 4th in the world is because they mainly play under par central american teams. This earns them points in the eyes of FIFA, which puts them up the rankings, but doesn't prepare them to take on teams like the czechs.

I personally don't think they stand a cat in hell's chance of making the knockouts, but fair play to them if they manage.
2006-06-12, 11:13 AM #133
The Czechs played excellent ball, and the US played well below what they're capable of. We still have a chance to pick up two wins in this group.
If you think the waiters are rude, you should see the manager.

Ghana yes, Italy.... that'll be a hard one.

OUCH FOR USA

2006-06-12, 11:35 AM #136
I'm already pumped for the next match. The guys from Ghana are really enthusiastic to win the game.

That means nothing. Quite the contrary actually, in this case.

It's the Czech strategy. They prefer to let the opponent think they're in control. It's called the reaction strategy. They let the opponent control the ball to lure the whole team onto their half. They just make sure noone gets into the penaltyzone. Once they see an opportunity in the opponent's defense, they'll speed up and counterattack very rapidly. More countries apply this strategy; Serbia-Montenegro, for one.

Ball possession percentages only mean something when 2 teams play the same strategy, or at least not the reaction strategy.

The US were chanceless against the Czechs beforehand. The Czech have one of the very best teams in the world, at the moment. I predicted a 2-0 for the Czech ... hehe too bad, I was one short.

I wouldn't say they were trying to let the US think that they were in control. The Czechs just started a little bit cautiously as to avoid a let down like Portgal has 4 years ago. Also, defensively, the Czechs were conceding possesion to US players that weren't dangerous offensively. Donovan had a scare few touches on the ball. Same for Bobby Convey. The US strength with the lineup they had was to get the ball to the flanking midfielders, let them carry deep and cross. The Czech defense took that away and the US didn't have a squad that could attack through the middle of the field.

Wow, an almost laughable goal by Italy. Laughable by how easy it was. Though the Italian player did put a rather hard hand on the Ghana defender's shoulder. The goalkeeper was nowhere near it though. Italy has this one.

It's not 'reaction strategy' it's just plain old counter-attacking football.

/Didn't watch the match but that's what it's called ;)

That, and the US fouled a lot, which kills possessions pretty quickly.

quick question for the Britassians -

do any of you have jobs?!

I managed a quick look in after australia v japan (w00t for the aussies!) and you guys had been posting furiously for hours!

I think the real question is wether they have lifes, not jobs. :psyduck:
2006-06-12, 1:54 PM #146
I saw just a minute or two of the US game during my lunch, and came home from work at the 66th minute of the Italy game. Missed the Australia game entirely. :(

I need to get a TV capture card before the next round so that I can record the matches.

I'm also incredibly jealous of my father, who leaves for Poland for two weeks tomorrow. He'll be able to watch pretty much all the first round games. My sister is staying in Poland until August, so she'll get to watch every game if she wants.

nope :D not yet, although I'll be marking A-Level physics papers over the internet come Sunday, still it'll be from home and I can work what-ever hours I like at ~£10 per hour.

the US were totally outplayed in the final 1/3 of the field by the Czech's, with all the possession the US never really made any credible chances on goal which is all their game was really lacking.

Also maybe because they were lacking the delivery or maybe the Czech defense was that good, but all the US attacks looked very predictable, few players seemed to show any flair or creativity when pressing forward.

The Czech's were awesome though, on that performance, semi's for sure.

only if they win their group.

Whoever comes second is up against Brazil... which i hope is Italy.
Whoever comes second is up against Brazil... which i hope is Italy.
I didn't see the Italy game so I can't really comment on how well they are playing, all I have though is that before the world cup they weren't playing very well.

either way it'll be between Italy and the Czech's as to who wins the group, personally I want the Czech's to win, I liked thier style of play, never seemed to sit back on thier lead (some would say that's foolish, maybe, but its entertaining) and they have some exciting players.

there is also the fact that for some unknown reason I don't like Italy that much :P

i can give you some reasons:

diving, shirt pulling, arm locking, time wasting, horrible boring tactics such as shutting down and going on an insane defensive as soon as you score, making the whole game dull as hell to watch.

I know. Three pages back I was asking if England was still playing on the counterattack, but nobody answered the question. ;)

My main point is, in counter-attack strategy you let the opponent control the ball, most of the time. Which is what the Czech did with the US. :P

USA needs some thinking time. Publicly singling out players is a big no no. It hurts morale. But at least it's a good wake up call for USA to get its act together. They should sack Arena and get a better coach as one gets the feeling he doesn't know what the hell he is doing.
