All right, I think that's too far. Nikumubeki should be banned for that post.

Sorry for the lousy German

In 2006, you used to regularly ask me for lunch suggestions on #massassi. About ten years later when I reminded you of all that, you claimed to have no recollection of such events!

... And for all that, I shall holiday the hell out of your star war special! Yeah!

My son and I watched Mortal Kombat the other day. I so loved that movie when it came out. I still love it. The sound track is so great. He asked if there is a second one... I reluctantly told him that ... yes, there is a second one :(
2018-10-10, 7:44 AM #166
Mortal kombat 2 is the best one. Not as good as the KoF movie tho.
2018-10-10, 10:05 AM #167
Mortal Kombat, for what it is, is a pretty decent movie. I remember back in the day being pleasantly surprised that they didn't do that ridiculous thing they did in so many marital art films where they show the same kick three or four times in succession. I bought the soundtrack. I'll just leave that at that.

I'm glad to see it took exactly one post before FGR added his usual ****posting. At least Jonk put in a little bit of effort with his ****post (does that count as an effort-post?).

In Mortal Kombat they have some scenes that make the fighting seem extremely violent and fast. The camera is showing the POV from the "victim" (one taking the punches/kicks) and it just works really well. Of course there is still the cheesy gravity-defying special moves now and again but it's worth it. I do love the very last Liu Kang move where it seems like he's going to do a fireball (special move from the game) but they turn it into more like a punch and it works really well.

Remember the Super Mario Bros. movie? Ughhhh.

The truth is, I don’t really have a list. I’m not sure what it would mean to write one. There are lots of movies I consider fun but are in no way good, there are lots of movies I consider good that I wouldn’t watch again, and there are lots of movies I used to really enjoy but have gotten tired of. The best I could probably do is a list of movies I feel like rewatching but that is a very temporary condition.

There are three kinds of people in the world: people who prefer Hunt for Red October, people who prefer K-19, and people who prefer Down Periscope.

I had the same philosophical issue. I ended up picking 10 movies I think do a really good job in the abstract, but I've seen much of that list so many times I'd be bored watching them again. Moreover I don't know whether to weight personal taste over what I think are the more objective qualities of the film. So I went for a balance.

By the way, I hate everything in Se7en after Kevin Spacey shows up. I find it boring. But I love the aesthetic and directing so much in the first part I still put it up there. I also like Fight Club aesthetically, David Fincher in general is a director I enjoy, but putting Fight Club in the top ten of any list is kinda yikes I think.

Fight Club would honestly be in my top ten if I weren’t so worried about people thinking it’s pro anarchy rather than anti toxic masculinity.
2018-10-10, 11:56 AM #177
There is more to Fight Club than meets the eye. I know this, because Tyler knows this.

Fight Club would be contender for top spot for me, as well as Memento. ("top spot" in the non-midget porn category of course)

Reminds me of a conversation in #massassi in the mid-2010s when I was like "you know, that film (Fight Club) is pretty much a solid analogy for how terrorist organizations are formed (sense of being weakened by society, call for fraternization, appealing to whatever, violent ideology -> terrorist acts) - see Al-Qaeda, Daesh, White Power groups et al".

To which someone responded "Tyler Durden isn't Muslim".

I'm still not sure if that was in jest or not, but still. Goddammit.

Well maybe that would have made the film watchable. :ninja:

Also untreated mental illness. The whole thing happened because a doctor told Jack to **** off instead of taking his problems seriously (insomnia isn’t real suffering, if you want to see suffering go to [group therapy session]).

The whole movie was about a dude who goes crazy and starts destroying things. His clothes, his apartment, his job, his friends, his city... it is not a positive, uplifting story.

Any list that causes local forum yokels to yike out about is a good list in my book.
2018-10-10, 2:30 PM #183
My list only has two movies on it.

1. Memento
2. Magnolia
2018-10-10, 2:35 PM #184
3. Mamentia
4. Megnolo
2018-10-10, 2:39 PM #185
It was pretty hard to narrow it down. It was tough to exclude Memento, The Big Combo, The Maltese Falcon (1941), LA Confidential and Cool Hand Luke from the top ten.
2018-10-10, 2:45 PM #186
Memento is easily my favorite movie ever, if only because it is basically structured so that watching it feels like walking through a stack trace in a program debugger.
2018-10-10, 5:08 PM #187
Is there a recent movie (last decade or so) that is similar to Fight Club since its subject matters seem more relevant these days than before?

I thought the movie was actually better than the book

What's great about Memento is that, whereas most movies have one climax, Memento climaxes every five minutes or so, building on the last one.

Well it's been a very long time since I've seen it but I really don't remember an overweight janitor in the movie.

Yeah, I also like the parallels to The Shining from that site Tenshu linked to (even if the guy sorta admits to stealing the idea from someone else and claiming that the first one did it "in jest", but anyway).

Also, I forgot Yukio Mishima from that list. I did plan to watch the movie about him (The Life and Times of Forbidden Colors of Mishima or something) in 2012 or so, never got the time (due to DXN) and nowadays I'm just not interested in films anymore. Curses!

'course they are

It's amusing how certain people always interpret films like Fight Club and American History X as a guidebook. With an additional dosage of "it (i.e. the plan in the film) would have worked, if [x] hadn't been weak! #FINALSOLUTION" in the mix.

Sort of like how you once mentioned how the Internet may have been intended as a bastion of spreading knowledge throughout the world - and instead we got 4chan and other SomethingAwful4Kids sites..

Also reminds me of how those nazzys got kicked out of Patreon so they started their own and unironically named it Hatreon. In other words, every dumb thing that once could/would have been brushed off with "there's no one that stupid" has become real.

It will be nice if someone can ever finally convince everybody to stop being convinced we will ever have a final solution to a problem (seewutididthar?)

Of course the internet was going to be concentrated banal crap. Humans use it. And most are boring.

Tbh. I don't think the movie is trying to say the life he held before was fine either. I think it's arguing for something else, but I'm not sure what that is.
