That said, Koobie's re-appearance last year was the last time Massassi was able to shake off the Trump(-adjacentiness) and focus on something else.

FGR, how the **** do you get the right color palette for JK? I want to retexture but this software is ancient and crap and I don't know how to do it.

I'm not actually Darth Evad old. I'll be 48 in a couple months.

A.) You don't. You use 16-bit MATs which don't use palettes but only work in hardware.

B.) If it's a model, use dflt.cmp. All of the other colormaps use dflt.cmp as a prefix. This way your retexture will work in any level.

C.) If it's a level, use the master colormap for the level. That's the first cmp in the list. This is the only cmp used by hardware. If a level uses multiple cmps it's for software-only sector tint, and the effect will be correct as long as your texture looks good in the master colormap.

D.) Don't. That's stupid. JK is overcomplicated and nothing you do will transfer over to anything else. Why would you even?

JK level retexturing problem #1: Instead of using u/v coordinates from 0 to 1 they use u/v coordinates in texels. That means any replacement texture has to be the same resolution as the original texture. If you want to increase the texture resolution you also have to change the texture coordinates in the JKL files. If you don’t do that, all you’ll be able to do is tweak the colors. You won’t be able to make it look better.

Presumably this was done to save themselves two floating point multiplies per vertex for software rendering, at the expense of two floating point divides per vertex for hardware rendering. Or something. Whatever.

Problem #2: MATs are limited to 256x256. I don’t know if a third party patch has increased the limit, but that’s what it was in the retail version. Most textures are pretty close to 256x256 already, so you won’t be able to improve the texture resolution much at all.

Presumably this was done so they could load texture data without allocating a dynamic buffer. I guess alloca was off the table too. Whatever.

I still can't believe that anyone actually used the software rendering in JK.

In 1998, I had merely a friggin' P166MMX with ATI Rage II+ and even back then, roughly 20 years and 4-5 months ago, I couldn't stand looking at the software rendering mode for one second so I enabled 3D Hardware Rendering and set the resolution to 512x384.

Yeah, in retrospect all this actually makes sense even to me, but I was quite flabbergasted a few years ago when someone on JKHub asked for a non-3D accel version of JKE because they thought JK was fine in software rendering mode (but still wanted JKE anyway).

(IIRC, someone actually made that 8-bit version of JKE anyway, which is sort of impressive in theory at least)

I don't remember disliking anything in particular about software mode. I do remember cranking everything up when I put a voodoo something or other in (P133) and only being annoyed by the tiny hud. That computer still works and it is one of the notorious brands, Packard Bell.

I had recently bought a new computer back when JK came out but the 3d card that came in it wasn't supported by JK. I could enable 3d but everything got weird/messed up so I played with the software renderer for a long time before I finally bought a voodoo 2.

The thing with the ATI Rage II+ I had was that at 640x480 or higher, any game with 3D accel (JK, Shadows of the Empire etc.) would indeed run at like 8 frames per second. 512x384 was fine, though.

(levels like BoaMSE and Leeza's Destiny 3 couldn't really run well even at 512x384, tho')

I remember how mad I was at my parents for buying the 8 MB instead of the 12 MB version, which only let me play at 800x600 and not 1024x768.

Oh. I just wanted a horde of Trumps saying America, but I didn't want to edit any cogs to trigger sounds randomly. The only sound triggers in the reeyee cogs were for alert and damage, so i had to keep damaging them to get the sound to play. It wasnt supposed to be like a murder trump thing.
